Gaming on an Aluminum PowerBook

Low End Mac's Dan Bashur says:

As a follow up to The Last PowerBooks Have Plenty of Life Left, I would like to elaborate on the least productive (but greatest diversionary) use of your late model Aluminum PowerBook G4. That, of course, would be the simple act of gaming....

In the later years of the PowerPC, there were quite a few impressive ports and releases of games that will simply blow you away (even by today's standards) when running on the heavy hitting G4 processors of any 2005 Aluminum PowerBook G4.

Netbooks Hot For Back To School - Apple Misses Boat

Investor's Business Daily's Patrick Seitz predicts that low-cost mini-notebook "netbook" computers will be hot sales items for this year's back-to-school season based on some analysts' projections, although probably not as replacements for desktop PCs or full-size notebooks, but rather for tasks like note-taking in class, use at coffee shops and Internet hot spots and so forth.

The article notes that netbook makers include all the major PC companies except Apple, wich appears to have missed the boat for this year's back-to-school buying binge even if the most optimistic rumors are realized and they get a tablet computer out the door in September.

"Apple Tablet" Probably A 10" Laptop - Skeptic

IntoMobile's Stefan Constantinescu expresses extreme skepticism about the likelihood of an Apple Tablet, and says he's frustrated by media rumors predicting a 10 inch tablet device forthcoming from Apple, and that seem so sure of this fabricated fact that they can not be convinced otherwise.

Backing up his contention Constantinescu chronicles the long, long history of Apple tablet speculation in painstaking, thoroughgoing detail, concluding that "There is no Apple Tablet, there never will be an Apple Tablet, and just in case you were wondering: I am a PC."

Running Windows For Free On Your Mac

MacFixIt's Topher Kessler says:

Virtualization is one of the most useful features of current computing hardware, allowing you to run multiple operating systems at once on a computer at near-native speeds. Despite its benefits, one of the big problems is that while many people have Windows software, they do not want to pay extra for running it on their Macs

Is Apple Plotting A Search Of Its Own?

The Register's Chris Mellor says:

Could Apple offer its own branded search, to compete with Google, Bing/Yahoo! and every other search engine available through a browser?....

The idea gets its latest traction because Apple has recently ejected Google CEO Eric Schmidt from its board.

The 10 Most Annoying Things in Internet Comments

OS News's Thom Holwerda says:

We all have our little pet annoyances when it comes to other people's comments. Fixed expressions or comment styles that annoy the living daylights out of you.

Thom's top ten peeves (your editor shares most of them) are:

"My 2 cents"

"I recently ditched Windows and..."

"80% of users use only 20% of the functionality"

"I'm not a fanboy..."

A lack of punctuation

A lack of paragraphs

Staccato comments

"What's the point of this operating system?"

"I have a MAC." - Please, for the love of the gods: the correct abbreviation of "Macintosh" is "Mac"

"Why is this on OSNews?"

Demand For Ultra-thin Notebooks Falling Short Of Expectations

DigiTimes' Monica Chen and Joseph Tsai report

Notebook players originally expected demand for ultra-thin notebooks to heat up in July and August of 2009, but the Windows 7 upgrade coupon promotion is stimulating limited demand while first-tier makers such as Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Dell will not enter the market until September. As a result consumers are still taking a wait and see attitude, according to industry sources.

Louisiana's Regulation of Internet Speech By Attorneys Declared Unconstitutional

[Press Release]

On Monday, federal Judge Martin Feldman declared unconstitutional Louisiana's new regulations of attorney advertising on the Internet.

Scott Wolfe Jr. and Wolfe Law Group, who practice construction law in New Orleans, Louisiana, challenged the new lawyer advertising regulations as they applied to the Internet. Wolfe argued the regulations failed to consider the differences between television and Internet advertising, and regulated Internet ads without a need.

The court not only noted that states must have a reason to regulate Internet speech, but it also recognized that the Internet media is different from broadcast media, and is entitled to unique protection.
same Rules as those developed for television, radio and print ads. Internet advertising differs significantly from advertising in traditional media.

"Louisiana didn't have a reason to regulate Internet ads, and they didn't understand how attorneys actually use the Internet to advertise," Wolfe said. "As a result, the rules were incompatible with the realities of Internet advertising."

The United States Louisiana Eastern District Court agreed, stating in its 39-page opinion that "the Internet presents unique issues related to advertising, which the State simply failed to consider in formulating this Rule."

"This is a very important ruling," Wolfe adds. "The court not only noted that states must have a reason to regulate Internet speech, but it also recognized that the Internet media is different from broadcast media, and is entitled to unique protection."

Certain other components of the new Louisiana lawyer advertising regulations were upheld, including restrictions on ads that promise results, portray a judge or jury or contain a celebrity endorsement.

While these regulations were upheld, the court noted that the "same Rules as those developed for television, radio and print ads" could not be simply applied to Internet advertising. Judge Feldman based this on a finding that "Internet advertising differs significantly from advertising in traditional media."

Wolfe, who advertises exclusively online, argued that if the rules took effect an attorney's participation in legal blogs and social networking sites would be unreasonably restricted. Further, Wolfe argued that Google ad campaigns could costs thousands in administrative evaluation fees.

Wolfe's lawsuit was filed in the United States Eastern District Court of Louisiana, docket number 08-4994. Read a copy of Judge Feldman's order at JDSupra. The plaintiffs were represented by Ernest Svenson of the Svenson Law Firm, and pro-se by Wolfe Law Group.

The Mac Night Owl: The Operating System Wars: So Who Really Wants Windows 7?

If you can believe some of the reviews out there, Windows 7 is all that Vista should have been. It's fast, reliable and has a solid interface. However, when CNET's own tests of the RTM (release to manufacturing) version failed to provide evidence of any significant speed improvement, other than the shut down process, you have to wonder what some of these people are smoking or drinking before they write their stories.
