Good News/Bad News: Today's Personal Computers Are Built To Last
MarketWatch's John Dvorak says:
We are in the midst of a long-term and massive economic slowdown. We already have more than a few PCs and it seems that if we tune them up with various software patches they work well....
This is the irony of the PC business, the current architecture makes the machines last longer than ever. This sort of longevity problem happens with cars, too. I have a number of family vehicles that are all over 10 years old and not worth upgrading. They work fine and seem to have along life ahead of them....
None of this is conducive to any sort of sector recovery in the U.S. or elsewhere. For the most part, except for adding some hard disk capacity, there is no compelling reason to upgrade your computer system unless it is failing electronically, essentially crapping out.

WindowShade X 5.0.5 Released
New in version 5.0.5:
You may have to restart after installing WSX for the first time.
Addressed a problem causing WSX to not work in applications that appear to be carbon but use cocoa windows (Adobe AIR apps, Adobe Photoshop CS5 32-bit)
Includes APE 2.6.1 to properly handle 64-bit Adobe CS5 applications.
Works with iTunes 10. However, it is ugly. If you want the old title bar back in iTunes 10, just enable an iTunes 10 feature by opening the terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and hitting return after entering the following on one line:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -bool YES
Replace YES with NO to restore the default iTunes 10 behaviour (which is not the iTunes 9.x behaviour).
This depression is unbelievably painful.
System Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.6 or later.
Rosetta.
$15.00 Shareware

What's The Faster, Better Mac Browser?
Mac 360's Alexis Kayhill says:
...I have more browsers on my Mac than I have children. And the browsers and children get equal time. If you had to live with only one browser on your Mac, which would it be? Safari? Firefox? Or, the newest, fastest, simplest browser on earth?
Don't all browsers do pretty much the same thing?
Is there a way to differentiate one browser from another?
Speed, Baby, Speed...
What I really want is what every pitching coach wants. Speed. Google's latest browser is the speediest ever....
On my Mac, Chrome starts up faster than Safari, renders web pages faster than Safari, runs Javascript and searches faster than Safari.....
It may be the fastest and most secure browser on the planet, Mac or PC, but its also, bar none, the ugliest.
[Editor's note: I have to disagree with Ms. Kayhill on Chrome's aesthetics, although I agree with her about its speediness, and its fast startup makes most other browsers (Safari is a pretty lively starter too) look like slugs out of the blocks. Personally, I brefer the Chrome interface to Safari's, and it would be near the top in my preference for looks in terms of default browser interfaces (Firefox and Opera are easily reskinnable. Ed.)

Mac vs. PC: Playing Russian Roulette At College
ZNet blogger Zack Whittaker says:
Would you buy your student kid a Mac at three or four times the price of a non-Apple laptop if you knew it might not last the year?....
Apple... has taken over other major PC manufacturers in the student laptop space, such as HP, Dell and Toshiba.
But - and here is the big caveat, as most universities run the Windows operating system throughout, the compatibility between Macs and PCs are still not there. Ubuntu struggles at times, as does Mac OS X, because theyre simply not Windows and thats one of the the simple reasons for it.
Macs are expensive... a bog standard laptop [PC] bought each year for three years makes up the cost of a basic MacBook....

Apple's 27-in. iMac 'The Center Of My Digital Universe'
Computerworld's Michael deAgonia says:
For the past month, the latest 27-in. iMac from Apple has been the center of my digital universe....
The 27-in. iMac's most prominent feature, of course, is the 2560- by 1440-pixel screen, which is framed by a black border. This border is now customary on most Apple products, from the iMac to the MacBook Pro and displays....

Kanguru Adds Cross Platform Functionality to Remotely Manageable, Hardware Encrypted USB Flash Drives
Kanguru Solutions has announced it has added Mac and Linux to the list of compatible platforms for its Kanguru Defender Elite, manageable, secure flash drives.
The Kanguru Defender Elite offers security features including: 256-bit AES Hardware Encryption, Remote Management Capabilities, On-board Anti-Virus, Tamper Resistant Design, and FIPS 140-2 Certification. The addition of GUI support for Mac and Linux opens Kangurus secure flash drives to a wider audience, allowing Mac and Linux users to benefit from its industry leading security features.

"The importance of cross platform functionality cant be overstated. Many organizations are utilizing more than one type of operating system in their day to day operations." says Don Brown, CEO of Kanguru Solutions. "Mac and Linux usage is an integral part of many organizations' IT infrastructure, so it is critical that our secure drives work with those systems."
The Kanguru Defender Elites security features help organizations meet some of the strict new security regulations outlined in the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH ACT), and Massachusetts 201 CMR 17. These regulations and more like them in development can penalize organizations that arent taking the necessary precautions to safeguard their data.
"Our goal has been to develop the most comprehensive set of security features ever built into a USB thumb drive. says Nate Cote, Kanguru's VP of Product Management. "And part of that includes making them work across various platforms. Encryption and remote management are only useful if they work within your organizations IT infrastructure."
The Kanguru Defender Elite currently works with:
(*) Windows XP and above
(*) Mac 10.5 and above
(*) Red Hat 5
(*) Ubuntu 10
Additional compatibility is in development for several other Linux distributions and connectivity options.

Apimac Introduces iDatabase - Database Manager for Mac and iPhone
Apimac announces iDatabase 1.0 for Mac OS X, their Mac compatible version of the company's highly successful iDatabase 3.2 for iPhone/iPod touch application. Designed to permit wireless, bi-directional syncing between computer and mobile device, iDatabase is a complete personal database management solution. Ideal for tracking membership lists, expenses, projects, Internet accounts, etc., the app includes 16 ready to use templates such as Accounts, Contacts, Exercise Log, Recipes, and To Do. Drop and drag creation of custom templates is also supported.
Virtually identical in features, layout, and operation, iDatabase 1.0 for iOS and iDatabase 3.2 for Mac OS X complement each other to offer a personal database management solution both on the desktop and on the go. The clean, simplified GUI allows the user to begin using the app immediately, without instruction of any kind. Facilitating this ease of use is a built-in library of 16 templates: Accounts, Classes, Computers, Contacts, Customers, Events, Exercise Log, Expenses, Inventory, Movie Catalog, Membership List, Mobile Phones, Notes, Projects, Recipes, To Do, and Vehicle Maintenance.
For example, opening the Expenses template, a variety of text fields, number fields, and choose fields are already perfectly organized and ready for use. Editing or adding to these elements is a straightforward, drag and drop procedure. The topmost, title field is labeled Description and is accompanied by a single line, large type text field. Below that is Amount with a single line number field. Next is a choose field, Type (of expense), consisting of a drop down menu populated with the following choices: Car, Entertainment, Hotel, Meal, Tolls, Parking, Transportation, and Other. Clicking in the Date field brings up the current date in standard month/day/year numerical notation, and each may be edited or incremented. Next is Have Receipt accompanied by a simple Yes/No choice field, and then Reimbursed, Yes/No. Last, is a text box entitled Paid By, allowing the user to enter all the details pertaining to payment.
iDatabase combines simplicity with sophistication in its support of custom templates. The app allows the user to select from 10 different fields:
(*) Small Text Field stores letters, symbols, and numbers used as text in a single line without scrolling bar
(*) Large Text Field stores letters, symbols, and numbers used as text in a multi line of text with scrolling bar
(*) Number Field stores numbers
(*) Date Field stores dates
(*) Time Field stores time
(*) Date and Time Field stores a date and time together to reference a fixed point in calendar time
(*) Image Field stores images
(*) Item Picker Field presents a list of mutually exclusive choices
(*) Separator Field divides a record into distinct visual parts
(*) Calculation Field presents the result of an arithmetic operation between two or more number fields
Adding fields, labeling, and ordering them create custom templates. This is conveniently accomplished using the drop and drag procedure. Fields are easily moved, added, subtracted and modified, and fields which require the use of other fields (e.g., the Calculation Field), automatically notify the user of this when employed. iDatabase for Mac and iDatabase for iPhone can be synchronized via Wi-Fi. iDatabase supports Backup and Restore, Exporting and Importing of databases in .idatabase and .CSV formats (the iPhone version via the service online Dropbox). The .idatabase files preserve the complete content and structure of the database, including pictures.
"With the great success of iDatabase for iPhone, our affordable personal database management solution, it became clear that we needed to develop a companion app for Mac," stated company Senior Vice President Worldwide Product Marketing Gabriele Gobbo. "iDatabase 1.0 offers all the features and convenience of the original iPhone version on any Mac computer."
Language Support:
(*) US English, Italian
System Requirements:
(*) Mac Version: Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later (Snow Leopard compatible)
(*) iPhone/iPod touch Version: iOS 3.0 or later (iOS 4 compatible)
(*) 8.3 MB OS X
(*) 1.2 MB iOS
iDatabase 3.2 for Mac is available for $29.00 (USD) from the Apimac Store.
