Apple Kills Recession

Forbes' Brian Caulfield declares "It's official. There is no recession at Apple.... The iPhone maker shocked investors Monday, reporting a fourth-quarter earnings leap of more than 47% from the year-ago quarter. Apple shares rose $11.65, or 6.14%, to $201.51 in after-hours trading.

"The result: There's no need to sell cheap notebooks. Layoffs are wholly unnecessary. If the company has any plans to replace the water coolers at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters with large vats of Dom Perignon, it should go right ahead."

Dell Refunds PC User For Rejecting Windows 7

The Register's Gavin Clarke reports that an enterprising PC user has been refunded on his copy of Windows, after rejected Microsoft's operating system and license conditions.

Reg reader Graeme Cobbett got a refund of $115 (Ł70.34) from Dell on his new Studio 1555 notebook with Windows Vista already loaded and a free upgrade to Windows 7 after opting to install Ubuntu-based Linux Mint instead, which the customer downloaded to another computer and burned to a disk, which he used to boot the new Dell.

By not starting Windows, the user avoided any obligation to accept the terms of Microsoft's EULA based on this clause:

"By using the software, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the software. Instead, return it to the retailer for a refund or credit. If you cannot obtain a refund there, contact Microsoft or the Microsoft affiliate serving your country for information about Microsoft's refund policies."

A Place for the Classic Mac OS in the Age of Snow Leopard

Low End Mac's Simon Royal says:

Mac OS X is a brilliant operating system.

In it's early versions, it was quite slow and full of bugs. Version 10.3 "Panther" was the first fully stable version, but it was still slow. OS X 10.4 "Tiger" introduced a lot of new features, was much more streamlined, and somewhat faster. Version 10.5 "Leopard" built on the success of Tiger and offered some new features, but it did cut out a lot of older hardware. Apple's latest offering, OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard", offers yet more features - but it has cut off all PowerPC hardware.

But what about "Classic" Mac in the Age of Snow Leopard?

My general rule of thumb: If you have an Intel Mac, run Snow Leopard. If you have a G4 capable of running Leopard, run it. If you have a G3 over 400 MHz, run Tiger. For anything less powerful, stick to the Classic Mac OS.....

Preview in Snow Leopard Supports Scanners and Screen Shots

Low End Mac's Alan Zisman says:

Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) has been marketed relatively quietly by Apple - much less hoopla and emphasis on hundreds of new features than in previous OS X releases. Instead, it's been made out as mostly a performance-enhanced (and Intel-only) cleanup of OS X 10.5 "Leopard". Even the name suggests it's a relatively minor upgrade.

Nicely, Apple's pricing reflects this - US$29, a modest price for a modest upgrade.

Nevertheless, there are changes to many Snow Leopard features beyond simply tweaking the code for improved performance or dumping PowerPC legacy code.

Take Snow Leopard's Preview.....

I was pleasantly surprised to find a seemingly unheralded new feature in Snow Leopard's Preview: scanner support...

Will Windows 7 exorcise Vista's ghost?

themalaysianinsider.com says:

"Thursday will mark a new dawn for Microsoft's cash cow, the Windows operating system (OS), with the worldwide launch of its seventh edition.

Simply called Windows 7, it is a huge step forward for the software giant trying to exorcise the ghost of Vista — the sixth Windows version.....

.....and since about nine out of 10 personal computers are running on Windows, Microsoft's business strategy for the last 20 years has been the same: release a new version of Windows every two to three years and get users to pay for the upgrade.....

Vista has clearly failed, and Microsoft is hoping Windows 7 is the remedy.... based on the same core foundation as the Vista and even looks a lot like it, but it is a lot more stable and faster.

DisplaySearch Forecasts Flat Panel Display Industry Recovery in 2010

According to the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly Worldwide FPD Forecast Report ( http://www.displaysearch.com/cps/rde/xchg/displaysearch/hs.xsl/quarterly_worldwide_fpd_forecast_report.asp ), global flat panel display revenues for 2009 will be $87.6B, down 15% Y/Y from 2008. The major reason for the decline is erosion in large-area TFT LCD panel prices compared to 2008, despite the fact that the TFT LCD market started to recover in Q2'09. Despite the gloomy forecasted results for 2009, the market is expected to recover in 2010 with a 5% compound annual growth rate and revenues of $93.3B.

According to David Hsieh, vice president of DisplaySearch, "2009 represents a drastic change for the whole FPD industry. The industry faced many critical challenges in the end of 2008 due to the global economic recession and the resulting drop in demand. However, as the market demand began to recover in early 2009 and the global economic situation is expected to continue to improve, we believe that the worst time for the industry has passed and the FPD market will experience growth after 2009."

a-Si TFT LCD continues to be the largest segment in all FPD technologies. However, AMOLED shows the strongest compound annual growth rate, 179% from 2008 to 2012, as suppliers solve technical and financial problems.

8 Drivers for FPD Growth

There are currently eight drivers for FPD growth in the next ten years: new applications and markets, new entrants and processes, new concepts and specifications, as well as new business and practices. Many of these are inspired by the downturn in the FPD industry in late 2008 and early 2009, which stimulated the FPD industry to find different strategies, markets and solutions.

SCO Boots Boss McBride

The Register's Austin Modine reports:

Unix code claimant SCO Group has jettisoned its controversial captain, Darl McBride, as part of the company's latest scheme to emerge from bankruptcy.

The serially litigious SCO's executive ousting was revealed in a filing today with US regulators, although corresponding paperwork gives McBride's actual dismissal date as October 14.....

....SCO's remaining management will still continue to push forward with its long-running intellectual property lawsuits against IBM and Novell.

McBride was the architect and voice behind SCO's troublesome legal crusade against Linux.....

SCO has since become a bankrupt shell of its former self, desperately attempting to unload some of its non-core assets to fund its court battles against IBM and Novell. Revival, at this point, seems extremely unlikely.....
