Global Notebook Shipments Grow Less Than Three Percent In 3Q13 - Digitimes Research
Digitimes Research's Joanne Chien reports that Taiwan's notebook shipments grew only 2.5% from Q2/12, and dropped 8.6 percent year-over- year in the third quarter, even though notebook ODMs have seen better-than-expected orders in September thanks to the launch of new products and demand from China's National Day holidays.
Ms. Chien says Taiwan's proportion of global notebook shipments rose from 84.9% in the second quarter to 86.2% in the third because Samsung Electronics, which produces most of its notebooks in-house, significantly cut back entry-level model shipments and Lenovo failed to raise its in-house production rate as rapidly as expected.
She also notes that Hewlett-Packard (HP) had the strongest sequential shipment growth among first-tier vendors at 30% in the third quarter, restoring its status as the largest volume notebook vendor in the quarter with a market share of 20 percent, displacing Lenovo (18.9 percent) as top-selling laptop maker thanks to education orders from India, while Apple saw 20% sequential growth in the third quarter thanks to the release of its new MacBook Air in June.

Apple's 2011 MacBook Pro Lineup Suffering From Sporadic GPU Failures
Appleinsider's Shane Cole says that owners of early-2011 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pros are reporting issues with those models' discrete AMD graphics processors, which in some cases results in the failure of the component, leaving an expensive logic board replacement as the only remedy.
Cole notes that users of affected machines report that display discoloration, banding, and image distortion are the most common visible symptoms, but many say that their computers suddenly freeze without any of the graphical warning signs, and that Apple has yet to address the fairly widespread issue, with many users reporting that the only repair option given to those without AppleCare coverage is a complete logic board replacement at a cost of $500 or more.

New Google HP Chromebook 11 The First Notebook to Use Analogix's SlimPort
Analogix Semiconductor, Inc. has announced that the new HP Chromebook 11 ultraportable notebooks feature built-in SlimPort interface solution, which allows users to connect with high-resolution HDTVs, monitors and projectors over a single standard mobile USB connector to give presentations or play movies and video games on the big screen, while using very little power.

The new HP Chromebook 11 is the first SlimPort-enabled device to use Google's Chrome operating system. Previous SlimPort-enabled products, including Googles Nexus 4 smartphones and Nexus 7 tablet computers, have used either Android or other operating systems. HPs new Chromebook is also the first SlimPort-enabled product to support Samsung's Exynos family of ARM processors.

"HP Chromebook 11 underscores the versatility of SlimPort, which is now supporting multiple processors, operating systems and product form factors," says Andre Bouwer, vice president of marketing for Analogix. "We expect SlimPort to become the de-facto mobile interface solution for display, data and charging over mobile USB connectors."

SlimPort's low-power solutions help to extend the battery life of portable devices, and enable their batteries to recharge during playback when plugged into a powered DisplayPort or HDMI display. The HP Chromebook 11 is compatible with all SlimPort accessories available today or coming soon to the market: SlimPort to HDMI adapter (SP1003), SlimPort to VGA adapter (SP2003) and SlimPort HDMI/VGA Combo adapter (SP1202).
Analogix Semiconductor is a leading supplier of DisplayPort-compliant semiconductors and IP products used in notebooks, tablets and other mobile devices. The DisplayPort standard is an innovative, packetized digital interface for high-resolution video and audio that was developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Analogix SlimPort products are based on DisplayPort technology.
