Oz Cops Say Use Mac, Not Windows For Online Banking
Munir Kotadia of Australia's IT News For Business reports that according to Detective Inspector Bruce van der Graaf from the New South Wales Police who was giving evidence on behalf of the NSW Government at a public hearing into Cybercrime this week in Sydney, consumers wanting to safely connect to their Internet banking service should use Mac OS X or Linux - or an Apple iPhone.
DI van der Graaf, whi is with the Computer Crime Investigation Unit, told the hearing that he uses two rules to protect himself from cybercriminals when banking online: 1) never click on hyperlinks to the banking site and 2) avoid Microsoft Windows.
Van der Graaf also mentioned the iPhone, which he called "quite safe" for internet banking "only capable of running one process at a time so there is really no danger from infection."

Email is Dead? Oh Really?
Gizmodo's Jason Chen notes thatWSJ is saying email isn't as important as social networks - a conclusion derived from both growth and absolute numbers being on the side of social networking this year, but Chen condends (and your editor agrees) that email is never going to be "dead". In fact, with push email on your phone, it's basically as instant as any of the other networks.

Four Reasons To Switch To IMAP For Email
Macworld's Joe Kissell says that you may know that your email client uses either the Post Office Protocol (POP) or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) standard to retrieve your messages asks whether you know why or you should care.
Using IMAP, your email client makes a local copy, but a copy also remains on the server (until you delete it), and IMAP also saves a lot of information about your message, such as whether you've read, filed, or forwarded it. With POP on the other hand, once you download a message, your local copy usually becomes your only copy, and even if you tell your email client to leave a message on the server after downloading it, the server won't know whether you've read or replied to it.
The upside of POP, Kissel nots, is that it uses bandwidth more efficiently, which is a major advantage for folks still on dialup services or other slow Internet connections, and it doesn't impose inbox storage quotas, but he maintains that IMAP offers a host of other advantages, citing four big reasons he thinks you should switch today. Your editor remains not entirely convinced, but you can check out Joe Kissel's arguments in favor here:

Recording An Acoustic Guitar Into Your Mac
LoopInsight's Jim Dalrymple says:
Technology is allowing just about anyone to record music without venturing into a traditional recording studio. That's good and bad....
I am a firm believer in recording an instrument when it sounds the best it can be. That means setting up the mics, taking into account positioning, phase issues and everything else that goes along with micing an acoustic guitar.

How to Install Non-Supported Scanner in Snow Leopard
HardMac's Lionel says one of their readers could not install the good old scanner Epson Perfection 1650 which was working perfectly with Mac OS X 10.5 on Snow Leopard, but as a a last chance shot he re-installed it on a Mac OS X 10.5-running computer, then copied manually and to the corresponding addresses/folders all the required files (Apps, Application Support, Profile Color Sync, etc.) onto his Snow Leopard-powered Mac. It works!
