Mac Laptops Big On Campus - Bump Dell For Number One
Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports that Apple has overtaken Dell as student laptop of choice, noting that according to a note by Global Equities Research's Trip Chowdhry mentioning that 7o percent of incoming University freshman students are arriving on campus with Macs, up 10% - 15% year-over-year, and observing that Microsoft is failing to connect with the new generation of users
Elmer-DeWitt recalls that just five years ago Apple's share of the campus laptop market had dwindled to the low teens, so Chowdhry's metrics seem almost too good to be true, at least for Apple.
Fortune's resident Apple-watcher says data from http://www.studentmonitor.com/ Ridgewood, N.J.-based research firm Student Monitor, which has tracked higher education computer purchases for 22 years, contradicts Chowdhry's 70% figure considerably. However, their figures are still cheerful good news for Apple, with MacBooks accounting for 27% of student laptops, although Dell and HP still rule among student-owned desktops, jointly accounting for 45 percent of units to Apple's 14 percent (15 percent of students have both laptops and desktops). Student Monitor also found that 87% planned to buy a laptop, and among those students 47% intended to buy a Mac.

MacBooks Now Student Laptop Of Choice - Microsoft's Share Drops Almost 2.5 Percent
Macworld UK's Nick Spence reports that MacBooks are now the preferred laptop choice for students, displacing Windows-based competitors from Dell, Toshiba, Sony and HP, according to the New Jersey-based research firm Student Monitor. A survey found that 95 percent of college students interviewed owned at least one computer, with 83 percent of which were laptops, 24 percent desktops, and 15 percent had both.
Among laptop owners, 27 percent owned MacBooks, while 14 percent of student-owned desktop computers were Mac.
In terms of future purchase intentions, 87 percent of respondents planned to buy a laptop, and among those 47 favored the Mac.
Spence also cites Global Equities Research's Trip Chowdhry report in a note to investors that 70 percent of incoming university students are arriving with Macs, a proportion up 10 to 15 percent year-over-year, and that Microsoft, whose share dropped nearly 2.5 percent, was falling out of fashion - "unable to connect with the new generation of users."

Apple Obtains Exclusive Rights To Custom, Super-Durable Metal Alloy
Appleinsider's Neil Hughes reports:
Apple has entered into an exclusive agreement to utilize amorphous metal alloys with unique atomic structures, allowing products that are stronger, lighter, and resistant to wear and corrosion, AppleInsider has learned.
The metal alloys owned by Liquidmetal Technologies were developed by a research team at the California Institute of Technology, and their amorphous, non-crystalline structure makes them harder than alloys of titanium or aluminum.

What Are Liquidmetal Technologies?
Liquidmetal Technologies says:
Steel was the foundation of our modern industrial revolution. In the 1800's, Sir Henry Bessemer of England invented a process to mass-produce steel inexpensively. Cheaper steel was crucial to the modern industrial revolution. Factories, automobiles, railroads, bridges and high-rise buildings were all made possible by the availability of steel.
During the 1900's, chemists invented THERMO-PLASTICS, which dramatically reduced the cost of manufacturing by using one mold for thousands of parts. In contrast, steel and titanium require one disposable mold for every cast part. Using a permanent mold can reduce the cost of casting by more than 10 times. Plastic's overwhelming cost advantage led to explosive growth, despite having only 1/50th the strength of steel.
Now, Liquidmetal alloys combine over twice the strength of titanium with the processing efficiency of plastics to create the 3rd revolution. In the 21st Century, scientists at Caltech and Liquidmetal Technologies developed a technology where metals behave similar to plastics. This new class of alloys is called Liquidmetal, due to its amorphous or liquid atomic structure. Rather than changing the atomic structure from a liquid state to a crystalline state, Liquidmetal alloys gradually increase their viscosity as the temperature decreases. All other metals are either in a solid or liquid state depending on the temperature.
The Bessemer Process and plastics technology dramatically improved the cost paradigm of their day, but only Liquidmetal alloys redefine the cost and strength paradigm simultaneously.

Liquidmetal alloys are a revolutionary class of materials that redefines performance and cost paradigms. The superior properties of Liquidmetal alloys are made possible by revolutionary scientific and technological innovations. Liquidmetal alloys represent the first enabling materials technology since the creation of thermoplastics and possess characteristics that make them superior in many ways to other commercially-viable materials. First, they have an "amorphous" atomic structure, which is unprecedented for structural metals. Second, they include a multi-component chemical composition, which can be optimized for various properties and processes. Finally, they lend themselves to process technology similar to that possessed by plastics.
Liquidmetal Alloy
The technology of Liquidmetal alloys provides for the optimization of properties for specific applications by tailoring the combination of process, chemistry and atomic structure. The technology of Liquidmetal alloys is proprietary and covered by numerous existing or pending patents.
The atomic structure is the most striking characteristic of the Liquidmetal alloys as it fundamentally differentiates Liquidmetal alloys from ordinary metals.
The atomic structure of ordinary or conventional metals and alloys is periodic, where the layout of atomic elements shows repeating patterns over an extended range. This atomic structure is called "crystalline" and limits the overall performance of conventional metals.
Liquidmetal alloys possess an "amorphous" atomic structure, which is truly unique. By contrast to the crystalline structure, no discernable patterns exist in the atomic structure of the unique Liquidmetal alloys. As such, properties superior to the limits of conventional metals can be achieved.
This amorphous atomic structure leads to a unique set of characteristic properties for the family of Liquidmetal alloys.
These characteristic properties are:
High Yield Strength
High Hardness
Superior Strength/Weight Ratio
Superior Elastic Limit
High Corrosion Resistance
High Wear-Resistance
Unique Acoustical Properties
One of the direct results of the unique atomic structure of Liquidmetal alloys is very high yield strength, which approaches the theoretical limit and far exceeds the strength currently available in crystalline metals and alloys. For example, yield strength of over 250 ksi has been achieved in Zr-base and Ti-base Liquidmetal alloys (VIT-001 series). This is more than twice the strength of conventional titanium alloys.
Another unique property of Liquidmetal alloys is the superior elastic limit; i.e., the ability to retain its original shape (memory) after undergoing very high loads and stress. Furthermore, the Liquidmetal alloys have much higher corrosion and wear resistance than their conventional (crystalline) counterparts due to the unique atomic structure. By varying chemical composition, some properties within the family of Liquidmetal alloys can be optimized even further.
One of the most unique characteristics of Liquidmetal alloys is the availability of its superior mechanical properties in as-cast form. This is in distinct contrast to conventional metals where the as-cast forms have inferior mechanical properties compared to their wrought and forged forms, which limits the fabrication of intricate and sophisticated designs.
The solidification of Liquidmetal alloys shows fundamentally distinct characteristics compared to the solidification of ordinary metals. This is due to the lack of phase transformation from the molten metal state during solidification. In addition, Liquidmetal alloys have very low melting temperature relative to their constituent metals. As a result, it is possible to fabricate Liquidmetal alloys in intricate and sophisticated designs without costly post-finishing processes.
The above mentioned qualities, specifically the availability of superior properties in as-cast form and low melting temperature, provide exceptional opportunities for processing Liquidmetal alloys in composite forms with a variety of reinforcements. The near-net shape processing characteristics of Liquidmetal alloys make the fabrication of highly sophisticated and sound composite structures possible. This allows us to further improve or tailor the following properties of Liquidmetal alloys for specific applications:
Fatigue Resistance
Yield Strength
Density
Elastic Modulus
Impact Resistance
Thermal and Electrical Conductivity
Coefficient of Thermal Expansion
Acoustic and Dampening Characteristics
This very unique combination of superior properties in the domain of high-strength metals and the fabrication characteristics of plastics positions the family of Liquidmetal alloys as the new paradigm in materials science. This revolutionary material will enable applications that will render obsolete current technology based on materials from titanium to plastic.

Electronic Casings
As the demand for product miniaturization continues in the electronic casings industry, Liquidmetal alloys enable smaller, thinner and more durable designs. Current casings technology is pushed to the limit in supporting these new designs and specifications, especially requirements for larger LCD screens, thinner wall sections and pure metallic surface finishes for products such as mobile phones, PDA's and cameras.
Liquidmetal alloys possess a unique combination of performance and processing characteristics that are in many ways superior to all available high performance materials such as magnesium, aluminum, titanium and plastics, providing innovative design and manufacturing solutions to the electronic casings industry.
Key Casings Advantages:
With approximately 2.5 times the strength of commonly used titanium alloy and 1.5 times the hardness of commonly used stainless steel, Liquidmetal alloys enable sophisticated, engineered designs required by the evolution of new technologies
Enables thinner, smaller designs while providing greater protection for internal components
Permits thinner walls while providing greater strength
Allows larger, wider screens for expanded features and capabilities
With precision net-shape casting, Liquidmetal alloys can be readily fashioned into intricate, innovative designs resulting in a unique aesthetic advantage
Excellent durability
Scratch and corrosion resistant
Non-reactive
As the demand for innovative electronic casings product designs increases worldwide, Liquidmetal alloys' cutting edge materials technology is finding an ever increasing and important role in providing designers, engineers and manufacturers solutions to meet expanding customer needs. Liquidmetal alloys combine the processing and cost advantages of competing technologies and performance characteristics that exceed current super alloys which position Liquidmetal alloys in the forefront of many design centers around the globe.
