LibreOffice 4.1.1 Free Office Productivity Suite Released

The Document Foundation has released an update of your editor's favorite Open Source productivity suite - LibreOffice 4.1.1

LibreOffice is a free multi-module office suite that offers word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, a drawing application that does 3D, a database front-end, and file compatibility with Microsoft Office plus other formats.

LibreOffice 4.1 is the most recent stable version of the software, and marks a major milestone for the LibreOffice project, with a host of new features for users as well as several important changes and improvements under the hood. Below are some notable changes in this version:

• Rotate images in Writer in 90 degree increments

• Send along your fonts with your documents. Writer, Calc and Impress now allow embedding fonts in their documents.

• It is now easy to include a series of photos in Impress with the "Photo Album" feature.

• Add a Stepped Lines line type to Line and XY (Scatter) graphs fdo#61135

• Especially for migrations, LibreOffice adds a number of significant improvements of interoperability with MS Office formats.

• A very large number of bugs have been fixed at an estimate of around 3000 bugs, of which 400 came from authors with apache.org mail addresses.

iCab Pro 5.1 Browser Released

Alexander Clauss's iCab Pro 5.1 web browser features ad blocking, phishing and malware site detection, kiosk mode, portable web archives, HTML validation, Unicode support, a cache browser, a simple RSS reader, support for alternate style sheets, tags and smart folders for bookmarks, and other features.

New in iCab 5.1:
• New feature to save a single window as "Session"
• Faster restoring of sessions and Tabs
• Improved fullscreen mode under MacOSX 10.7/10.8
• Many additional improvements
• Several bugfixes.

This release adds an option to save a single window as a Session, faster restoration of Sessions and Tabs, improvements for fullscreen mode in Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8, and "many additional improvements."

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.8 (Universal Binary).

iCab 4.9 is also still available for MacOSX 10.3.9 and 10.4.11. Newer versions of iCab will require at least MacOSX 10.5.x.

Unfortunately iCab Pro, notwithstanding its deep and unique feature set, is doomed to remain a bit player in the browser category due to its being the last general purpose browser that is not offered for free, with a registration fee of $20. That's mighty steep, especially in an era of mostly under five dollar idevice apps and a wide selection of excellent free Web browsers.
