New Photo May Reveal More Of Apple's Next-gen MacBook Pro
AppleInsider reports:
A photo originating on a Chinese website and making the rounds on the Web this afternoon resembles descriptions of Apple's next-generation MacBook Pro, which is expected share design similarities with the company's MacBook Air and aluminum iMacs.
The photo depicts what could be the left-hand side of a 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro with a new speaker grill design and keyboard cutout that matches the one already employed by the company's 13-inch MacBook Air.....
This would appear to conform with expectations that both Apple's new MacBook and MacBook Pro would borrow design cues from the most recent iMacs and MacBook Air, as was outlined in an AppleInsider report in April....

Photo Of Alleged 'Brick'-Based MacBook Pro Emerges
Electronista reports:
A photo of a new, upcoming MacBook Pro has been leaked online, a report claims. The model is described by Engadget as part of an upcoming refresh, and said to be based on a rumored "brick" manufacturing process, in which notebooks would be formed out of a single block of metal, using water and lasers to carve out details. .....

Window For Rumored October 14 Apple Event Closing
AppleInsider reports:
With less than six days to go before Tuesday, October 14th and not a peep from Apple, chances of a much-rumored media event on that day to introduce new Mac notebook offerings is growing slim.....
While introductions on that date remain possible, history would suggest that the window of opportunity for Apple to do so in a media-filled forum is rapidly closing. Taking a historical look back at Apple's surprise media events..... reveals that only once in the last four years has the company issued invites to the media less than a week before the event was scheduled to take place.....
Alternatively, it could elect to introduce redesigned MacBook and MacBook Pros next week without a formal presentation.

Migrating My Law Office from Windows to Macintosh
Low End Mac's Andrew Fishkin says:
In my previous installment, I compared the costs of buying a new Mac Pro configured as a server with upgrading my existing Windows server to modern specifications and operating system. While the upgrade option was considerably cheaper, I'm leaning strongly toward the Mac.
What I didn't mentione is that regardless of which server option I take, the technology is now such that I can easily migrate all of my client computers to Mac OS X. Whether I use Leopard Server and Apple's built-in productivity applications (Mail, iCal, Address Book) or continue to use Exchange with Microsoft Entourage 2008, I no longer am forced to use Windows for calendar sharing as I was three years ago....

Apple patents OS X Dock
The Register's Austin Modine reports:
Apple has patented the OS X Dock, nearly a decade after the operating system made its public debut with a new slant on the taskbar.
The late arrival isn't due to a lack of initiative, however. Apple applied for the patent December 20, 1999, and it was approved by the US Patent Office only yesterday....
The patent credits inventors Steve Jobs, Bas Ording, and Donald Lindsay.

Over Half Of 2009 Cars Will Offer iPod Connectivity
MacNN reports:
For customers wanting a car that communicates with their iPod, 2009 is going to be a good year to shop for a new car. Over half of the 2009 model-year cars sold in the US will offer at least optional support for Apple's iPod, according to research by iSuppli. The trend reflects automakers' desire to increase sales by offering popular technological features......

Research confirms Apple product strategy
9To5Mac's Andy Space reports:
A UK survey has revealed a bundle of interesting statistics concerning the so-called "iPod Generation", with the role of the TV declining in importance as we turn to the internet as the hub of our lives.....
Over half (58 percent) of 18 to 24 year olds visit a social networking site every day with 42 percent of 25 to 34 year olds admitting the same frequency....
There's deep creative opportunity in this new mood: 18% of 18-24 year olds and 17% of 25-34 year olds create and share videos online at least once a week. It's almost like the world has caught up with Apple CEO Steve Job's vision of the "digital hub" for music, movies and media - iMovie is built for this.....
Sadly, dumbed-down celebrity culture has contributed to the phenomenon, as 36% of 18 to 24 year olds and 34% of 25 to 34 year olds "would like to be a celebrity and around 60% of both groups think websites like YouTube have made it possible for anyone to become famous." In a world without riches an egocentric sense of self-achievement appears to be becoming a currency for generation Y.

Apple launches "Field Trip to the Apple Store" program
AppleInsider reports:
Apple continues to come up with innovative ways to introduce younger generations to its family of products, the latest of which invites teachers to book a field trip to a local Apple retail store ahead of the holiday shopping season.
"Take your students on a Field Trip to an Apple Store for an unforgettable learning experience," the company says on a new website dedicated to the initiative. ....
The goal is to introduce K-12 students in the US and Canada to the world of Apple products right before they'll be filling out their holiday wish lists. ....

Gmail 'Mail Goggles' Might Prevent Email Regrets
The Associated Press reports:
If you're the kind of person who types tipsy and regrets it in the morning, Google's "Mail Goggles," a new test-phase feature in the free Gmail service, might save you some angst.
The Goggles can kick in late at night on weekends. The feature requires you to solve a few easy math problems in short order before hitting "send." If your logical thinking skills are intact, Google is betting you're sober enough to work out the repercussions of sending that screed you just drafted.
And if you can't multiply two times five, you'll probably thank Google in the morning.

How to Recycle a Cube
HardMac's Lionel says:
Apple is regularly updating the list of unsupported hardware, indicating that such computer can not be service anymore, and one will not find spare parts. As illustrated by this PowerMac G4 Cube, not being to replace dead pieces does not necessarily mean it can not be useful anymore:....

Macs: The Preferred Platform of Democrats?
MacLife's Carol Pinchefsky reports:
Don't tell hardcore Mac user (and Republican) Rush Limbaugh, but Apple's market share skews towards Democrats. According to Vincent Vizzaccaro, executive vice president of Marketing and Strategic Alliances, there "seems to be quite a strong correlation between typically Democratic voting states and higher concentrations of Mac usage."
Take a look at the 2004 electoral college votes and compare it to the this map of the Macs state-by-state market share. As you can see, the statistics are far more interesting than what you learned (and promptly forgot) in college about negative binomial distribution.....

University Study Confirms 43% of Women Prefer Mac Over PC
iPhoneSavior's Jeff Werner reports:
In a random sampling of seven college students attending a lecture at one British Columbia university, conclusive evidence has revealed that 43% of college women prefer Apple's wildly popular Mac laptop over PC's. An eighth woman present remained neutral on the subject pretending to be more interested in the lecture than our research....
Our team is currently collecting data for an innovative new study involving Macs and super models. We're anticipating the results to be quite favorable for Apple. The truth is out there.
