Dell and Apple Make Gains in Q4 PC Market
iSuppli reports:
The fourth quarter of 2007 was a strong period for the top-tier U.S. PC brands, with Hewlett-Packard Co. continuing to pad its dominance in the global market, Dell Inc. showing signs of a resurgence and Apple Inc. coming on strong, according to iSuppli Corp....
After HP and Dell, the next U.S.-based PC OEM in iSuppli's preliminary rankings is Apple, ranked just below the Top-5 brands at No. 6, a position the company has held since the third quarter of 2007. The company's total fourth-quarter PC shipments grew 39.3 percent year-on-year, with equally strong growth for its desktop and notebook businesses.

The Trouble With Steve Jobs
Fortune's Peter Elkind reports:
In October 2003, as the computer world buzzed about what cool new gadget he would introduce next, Apple CEO Steve Jobs - then presiding over the most dramatic corporate turnaround in the history of Silicon Valley - found himself confronting a life-and-death decision.
During a routine abdominal scan, doctors had discovered a tumor growing in his pancreas. While a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is often tantamount to a swiftly executed death sentence, a biopsy revealed that Jobs had a rare - and treatable - form of the disease. If the tumor were surgically removed, Jobs' prognosis would be promising: The vast majority of those who underwent the operation survived at least ten years.
Yet to the horror of the tiny circle of intimates in whom he'd confided, Jobs was considering not having the surgery at all. A Buddhist and vegetarian, the Apple CEO was skeptical of mainstream medicine. Jobs decided to employ alternative methods to treat his pancreatic cancer, hoping to avoid the operation through a special diet - a course of action that hasn't been disclosed until now.....

IBM Gets Back Into PCs
The Register's Kelly Fiveash reports:
IBM is getting back into the PC game - or at least it is in Eastern Europe.
The company sold its PC business and brands to Chinese hardware maker Lenovo in 2005 and this time round is partnering with an Austrian company to make the actual boxes and with a Polish firm to distribute them.
The Microsoft-free boxes will be made by Austrian firm VDEL, and Warsw-based LX Polska will act as distributor. The computers will be called "Open Referent" and are based on IBM's Lotus Open Collaboration Client Solution marketing initiative with Red Hat.

CrossOver Will Finally Do What Everyone Actually Wants
MacUser's Dan Pourhadi says:
Let's be honest: nobody uses Windows-on-Mac tech for anything productive or important. There's all this nonsense about running Windows-only business apps, or taking advantage of Microsoft technologies like Windows DRM, or ensuring better file compatibility with coworkers and friends. But that's crap. There's only one thing people want from Windows virtualization.
