Apple's Best Mac Quarter Ever

Low End Mac's Dan Knight says:

Best. Mac. Quarter. Ever.

From a Mac user's perspective, those four words summarize Apple's latest quarterly results.

Yes, Apple set new records with $15.7 billion in sales and $3.25 billion in profits.

Yes, the iPad is a runaway success - Apple sold nearly as many of the iOS tablets (3.27 million) as Macintosh computers over the past quarter. And yes, the iPhone remains a huge hit with 8.4 million units sold, a 61% year-over-year improvement, thanks to the launch of the iPhone 4, "the most successful product launch in Apple's history". And even though total iPod unit sales declined, it remains the dominant platform with 70% of the market, total iPod revenues are up, and iPod touch sales grew 48% year-over-year.

But the big news for those who think the Mac has somehow become less important to Apple in light of the success of the iPhone and iPad,,, Macintosh sales were up 33% year-over-year, reaching a record high of 3.47 million units. (Mac sales were up 40% in the Americas, and, according to IDC, the overall computer market has a 22% growth rate.)

Over the past year, Apple has sold over 12 million Macs (12.83 million to be precise), the first time it has reached that level, and there seems to be no end in sight for the Mac's continued growth......

Use Thunderbird to Move from Outlook to Apple Mail

Lifehacker says:

Making the move from Windows to Mac? One of the trickier transitions might involve your Outlook email. To make the switch smoothly and transfer all your mail and setup to Apple's Mail app, use the free Thunderbird client as a go-between.

At the How-To Geek's home away from Lifehacker, Chris writes and details in screenshots the process of using Thunderbird to pull mail, settings, contacts, and calendars out of Outlook, then importing them into Apple Mail. It's not a tricky process, but the right menu options and settings might not be apparent to someone new to either Thunderbird or Apple Mail....

Apple: "International Numbers Are Absolutely Killer"

Appleinsider's Daniel Eran Dilger reports:

While noting domestic growth in the US that has consistently outpaced the overall industry for the last 17 consecutive quarters, Apple drew specific attention to even more dramatic growth in sales internationally in its June quarter conference call.

Apple Ponders iPad Cannibalization of PCs

CNET's Brooke Crothers reports:

Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said Tuesday that the iPad market is "very big" and speculated about cannibalization of PCs, while two market research firms upped their forecasts for tablet shipments in 2010.

... During Apple's third-quarter earnings conference call Tuesday, Cook mused about the continuing strong sales of the iPad and its potential to eat into PC sales. "The iPad "is not following typical early adopter curve and taking a long time to cross into the mainstream...We are absolutely selling every unit (iPad) that we can make," Cook said... "Our guts tell us that this market is very big...if it turns out that iPad cannibalizes PCs, that's fantastic for us because there is a lot of PCs to cannibalize," he said.....

Mac Sales Have Tripled In The Past Five Years

The Register's Rik Myslewski notes that that amid all the ballyhoo and whoop-de-doo about Apple's resurgence being a result of the consecutive successes of the iPod and iPhone - and the promise of the iPad - a major Apple money-maker has been flying under the radar: Mac sales have tripled in the past five years.

While the iPhone et al have been capturing headlines, the Mac has been capturing hearts and minds says Myslewski, noting that there's been a 33 per cent Mac unit-sales uptick when compared with the same period last year, and one reason why Mac sales have tripled since Q3 2005 is skyrocketing penetration of international markets, especially in Asia. Myslewski cites Apple data indicating that in Asia-Pacific, Mac sales grew 73 per cent year-over-year, in China it was 144 percent, In Korea 184 percent 63 percent in Japan, and in Hong Kong almost doubling.

Apple May Introduce a New Design Concept for the MacBook Air

Patently Apple notes:

Taiwan's DigiTimes reported on July 15, 2010 that Apple is preparing their next generation MacBook Air to sport an 11.6 inch display and an Intel Core i-series processor. But the news didn't stop there. The statement that followed was a loaded statement that may point to the MacBook Air gaining a new design and concept. This report looks at two or more possible concepts that might make the cut this fall.

Use Your Mac To Explore What's On Your iPhone

Mac 360's Alexis Kayhill says:

My Mac is well organized and after years of use I know pretty much where every file and folder is located. What about my iPhone? Different story.

I know where my apps are located, and thanks to iOS 4 I can have more apps, games, tools, utilities, and I can organize all of it in screen folders. But what's lurking under the hood of my iPhone? What s inside? Take a look using iPhone Explorer. It s free.

Cooking for Geeks--New from O'Reilly Real Science, Great Hacks, and Good Food

[Press Release]

Are you the innovative type, the cook who marches to a different drummer--used to expressing your creativity instead of just following recipes? Are you interested in the science behind what happens to food while it's cooking? Then "Cooking for Geeks" (O'Reilly Media, $34.99 USD) is for you.

More than just a cookbook, "Cooking for Geeks" applies your curiosity to discovery, inspiration, and invention in the kitchen. Why is medium-rare steak so popular? Why do we bake some things at 350 degrees F/175 degrees C and others at 375 degrees F/190 degrees C? And how quickly does a pizza cook if we overclock an oven to 1,000 degrees F/540 degrees C? Author and cooking geek Jeff Potter (@cookingforgeeks) provides the answers and offers a unique take on recipesfrom the sweet (a "mean" chocolate chip cookie) to the savory (duck confit sugo).

"Readers of 'Cooking for Geeks' will be much more comfortable walking into the kitchen, picking up a frying pan, and trying something new after reading the book," says Potter, who has been cooking since he was a child growing up in California. "'Cooking for Geeks' shows you how to have fun in the kitchen by blending science with cooking and takes a playful, quirky approach to teaching you how to be a better cook."

This book will help you:
- Initialize your kitchen and calibrate your tools
- Learn about the important reactions in cooking, such as protein denaturation, Maillard reactions, and caramelization, and how they impact the foods we cook
- Play with your food using hydrocolloids and sous vide cooking
- Gain firsthand insights from interviews with researchers, food scientists, knife experts, chefs, writers, and more, including author Harold McGee, TV personality Adam Savage, chemist Herv This, and xkcd.

"There's really no book out there like Cooking for Geeks - it's science textbook meets cookbook, written to appeal to anyone who's curious about how the details work in the kitchen," says Potter. "And it's not just for technical geeks - anyone who wants to do more than just follow a recipe will enjoy the book."

The Tech Night Owl: So is Apple Under a Cloud?

You can almost see how the 24/7 cable news talking heads are handling the situation. Apple Inc., after being at the top of the mountain several years, is now once again a beleaguered company as the result of the Antennagate scandal. Both customers and the press have lambasted the company and mercurial CEO Steve Jobs for failing to understand the known flaws in the antenna design for the iPhone 4, and Wall Street is wondering just how Apple s bottom line might be hurt.
