Products And Politics Mix At Macworld

The Associated Press reports:

Amid iPod upgrades, movie deals and Apple TV price cuts, there was a tinge of politics at the Macworld Conference & Expo.

But it didn't come from Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs. The man electing to wade into political waters Tuesday was the musical guest, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Randy Newman.

Newman and his piano were rolled out on a moving stage and he quickly launched into his song, "A Few Words in Defense of Our Country."

Dell Tells Customer 'Mac Is Good Option'

The Register's Kelly Fiveash reports:

Computer giant Dell stunned a Reg reader seeking a processor upgrade when it told him he might want to consider a "Mac".

The El Reg reader had emailed the firm's hardware technical support team asking whether it was possible to upgrade his one year old Dimension 9150's processor to a Core2 CPU without having to also replace other components.

Here's how Dell hardware frontline responded:

"Thank you for your response to Dell hardware tech support. It's true that if you want to upgrade the processor to a high end, you need to upgrade motherboard and consequently other devices like PSU, proc fan etc. I would suggest that purchasing a new PC is a better option than to upgrade it on this system as replacing the motherboard and processor is going to be expensive.

It's better you get a new system with duo or quad core processor. Mac is a good option. You may also look at XPS systems of Dell [XPS One is the best in XPS performance line], you may google on this system to get more information."

Google bringing Picasa to the Mac later this year

Ars Technica's David Chartier reports:

At the Macworld Google booth, TechCrunch was able to find out that Google is bringing Picasa, its popular Windows-only photo manager and editor, to the Mac sometime this year. From my experiences tinkering with Picasa on my brother's PC during the holidays, it was clear that Picasa does some pretty interesting things in very different ways from iPhoto. I can only hope that Google maintains that unique approach to photo organizing while bringing this app to the Mac where users are notorious for banging the "do it like Apple!" drum.

Apple's OS X Takes Over International Market

OSWeekly's Brandon Watts says:

No matter how you cut it, OS X is doing fantastic in the United States. People that didn't care about it before now have a reason to care because of Leopard and the disappointing reception of Vista. Nowadays, whenever I go to a technology conference or a place where people can be seen with their laptops (such as a Starbucks), I see more Macs than other competitive brands....

Apple's presence is certainly growing in the United States, but I've always been curious as to how adoption of OS X is going in other countries. I had the opportunity to visit Paris for business reasons early last year, and I have to say, I definitely noticed a difference. I was carrying my PowerBook around, but for the most part, people were using PC laptops.....

I've always wanted to visit Japan, and since it's such a technologically advanced country, I'm sure that I'd enjoy it. Anyway, the report went on to say that sales of OS X have outdone those of Windows for the first time in history, which is huge....

The Importance of Cross Platform Compatibility

OSWeekly's Brandon Watts says:

I've gone on and on about how important cross-platform software really is in the past, and my mission to spread the word about its importance will continue. It can be frustrating to hear about a great application, become intrigued by its features and functionality, and then find out that it's only available for one operating system. Oh, the humanity!....

During my evangelization of cross-platform software the other day, I realized there was a flaw in my reasoning that I needed to correct. For a long time, I've been saying that the development of cross-platform solutions should be a goal for every software developer (it's my goal, too), but if you're going to just write them in only one way and push the same exact code out to every platform, then maybe you're not truly ready to go cross-platform.

Apple's Macworld star: It's not the MacBook Air, it's the AppleTV

BloggingStocks' Brian White says:

Although Apple, Inc's Macworld keynote address by CEO Steve Jobs was followed by millions of eyeballs yesterday, the biggest "wow" product was the announcement of the MacBook Air, the world's thinnest and perhaps most advanced miniature laptop computer. While the MacBook Air stole the show, an announced enhancement to an existing Apple product should have been highlighted more.

Yes, I'm talking about the Apple TV.....

The Apple TV product, as it will be in a few weeks when the software update becomes available, will become arguably the best equipped product to pull entertainment content from the internet directly to a small box that's connected to the living room TV.
