The Book of GIMP A Labor Of Love

MacPrices' Charles Moore says that Olivier Lecarme and Karine Delvares' new The Book of GIMP from No Starch Press merits the description "labor of love" better than any other computer book he's encountered.

Subtitled "A Complete Guide To Nearly Everything about GIMP" (GNU Image Manipulation Program), the Open Source high-end image editing and creation software alternative to Adobe's paradigm-setting and pricy ($649.00 MSRP) Photoshop CS application, this book is packed with 679 pages of tutorial and reference information for GIMP users.

And while some might question spending $50.00 on a user manual for a free software application, Moore says another way to look at it is that youve saved yourself hundreds of dollars by opting for the GIMP instead of Photoshop, so you can easily justify spending a much smaller amount on a book that will help you get the most out of what is a very powerful graphics program, but one that has a reputation for being challenging to master.

SHOOTOUT: Is The Flash Storage In The 2013 Retina MacBook Pro Faster Than Storage In The 2012 Version?

BareFeats' rob-ART morgan says:

"Our 'Mid 2012' Retina MacBook Pro (15") has a Samsung 512G flash storage module. One of our "remote mad scientists" bought a 'Early 2013' Retina MacBook Pro (15") with 512G flash storage but it is made by SanDisk. (See an article on Anandtech for more details on Apple's choices of manufacturers.)

"So which one is faster, the Samsung or SanDisk flash storage? And how do both compare to OWC's Aura Pro 480G flash storage upgrade? We have an answer to both questions."

Morgan also notes that If you purchased the 2012 (or 2013) MacBook Pro with the 256G flash storage and need more capacity, the 480G Aura Pro is a nice upgrade - very easy to install since OWC provides the tools and the step-by-step directions, and you can install the removed Retina MacBook Pro flash storage module in the OWC Envoy Pro USB 3.0 bus powered storage device and use it as auxiliary storage.

Why Don't MacBooks Come With Cellular Networking?

Blogger Marco Arment says:

I'm not sure why Apple hasn't offered [4G networking on MacBooks] as an option yet, but my guess is that its because Mac OS X isn't designed to behave differently while on different types of networks. With cellular networking, for example, you wouldn't want iTunes to download new episodes of TV episodes or even podcasts in the background a single episode could eat up your entirely monthly bandwidth allotment....

Arment notes that it's been long enough since cellular modems in PC laptops became commonplace that the omission of cellular options on MacBooks looks like a deliberate choice rather than a haven't gotten around to it yet feature.

He says he was hoping Mountain Lion would add some APIs suggesting cellular data considerations, but it didn't happen. Maybe 10.9 will.

MacMate Now Includes Filesharing for Large Files

MacMate, the Mac cloud storage and hosting service, which launched to replace Apple's MobileMe service in 2012, has added its sixth key feature into the growing MacMate cloud service: FileSharing, the ability to easily send any file, any size, to anyone. With a few clicks, users can drag or select a file to share, add a message and send securely.

With a few clicks, users can drag or select a file to share, add a message and send securely. There's no file-size limits, no bandwidth restrictions and no limit to the amount of files that can be shared. It's quick, secure and has some innovative features like low-resolution previewing, expiry date and download notification, as well as being able to share a file with multiple users (cc'd or bcc's) and mailing lists - so a file can be shared with the whole company, school or an entire customer base for example. The really great news is that this unlimited file-size sharing service starts at just $29.00 USD per year, compared to $99.00-plus for comparable services.

Gary Hall, founder and CEO of MacMate said "We're continuing to add amazing services to MacMate. FileSharing works amazingly and is the most exciting new feature since we launched MacMate. It addresses problems customers have sending large files via email or FTP - offering them an elegant replacement - at an amazing price. FileSharing is quick, simple and secure."

Recently MacMate enhanced its hosting service - popular with iWeb users as well as anyone looking for Mac web hosting services - with easy-to-use SEO injectors and true multi-site and multiple domain capability for both websites and email. What's more is that the hosting is in fact very well specified: 100% uptime cloud clustered hosting with multi-continent load balancing and failover - something you'd normally pay significantly more for. As too are the business-class email facilities that come with MacMate.

>From an established, award-winning ISP, MacMate's sixth key cloud-services under one roof represent a new chapter in how to share your cloud: hosting (from any web design program), galleries, email, cloud storage, filesharing and calendars.

MacMate promises to add additional functionality soon with public download folder enhancements, guest upload capability as well as a whole new, re-mastered gallery feature. With major product upgrades every couple of months there's surely much more to come from MacMate in 2013.

MacMate was designed specifically as an alternative to MobileMe and to fill the gaps left by iCloud, namely Mac cloud storage, iWeb hosting and galleries. Since its first launch in April 2012, new features have been added and improved and it's gathered a loyal following around the world. MacAce owns its own network based in both London and Bristol in the UK, New York and Boston in the US - with superfast links the world over. It's an ISP that proudly guarantees all of its services and has achieved notoriety, in the UK particularly, when it was crowned Best Overall ISP (Customer Choice) in the 2012 ISPA awards, as well as numerous other "Best ISP" and "Best Web Host" awards during the last 4 years.

MacMate starts at $29.00 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) per year for the basic cloud disk storage at 5GB, email, iCal calendar hosting and now FileSharing. The top-of-the-line MacMate Pro ($99.00) package includes the web hosting and galleries features too. Included is a new iOS app for file storage, file sync and gallery management. Both are available from the MacMate website.
