Mac Best For Design Students
The University of Georgia Red & Black's Rachel Bunn reports:
Mac versus PC is an eternal debate among technology geeks, and the department of graphic design at the University has chosen its side - Mac.
"In our industry, the Macintosh is by far the most dominant platform - about 90 percent use it," said Lanny Webb, graphic design chair at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. "It doesn't make sense to train on a PC."....
A similar program at the University of Florida will require all UF journalism students to purchase a Mac computer beginning this fall.

IPad Needs to Focus on Multitasking, Multiple Users
Macworld's Kirk McElhearn says:
With the hullabaloo over the announcement of the iPad in the not-too-distant past, I've been thinking about what we were shown in Steve Jobs' presentation of the new device, and what might be missing. It turns out that there are two features that were either not presented in the demo, or that are not included on the iPad, and which are essential to what I think the device will become. Both of these features, coincidentally, contain the word "multi": multitasking and multiple users...
...Actually, multitasking is essential to one of the major features that Apple has been touting on the iPad: iWork. Imagine trying to make a Keynote presentation without being able to access other files or being able to check on the Internet for data, citations or other information.... If Apple wants people to take the iPad seriously as a device for creating documents--and not just viewing them--multitasking is essential...
Also:
User accounts have been part of the Mac OS since the first version of Mac OS X, and there's no reason why they can't be implemented in the iPhone OS, as it already contains different "users" for system functions....

Bill Gates: iPad Will Struggle Without Pen And Keyboard
Electronista reports:
The iPad needs to be more like the Tablet PC to be successful, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates argues in an interview today. He admits that he sees the Apple device as a "nice reader" but says he's not envious of the design as it doesn't have the hardware he feels would be needed to reach critical mass.....

ASUS Wants To Be An Open Apple, Vows "Killer" June Device
Electronista reports:
ASUS wants to transform itself into 'another Apple' and has a device in the works to help it along, company CEO Jonney Shih said Wednesday. He hopes his Taiwan firm will be put on the Mac maker's level but serve as an open-source alternative that uses Android and Chrome OS, not just closed options like Windows.....

Apple can build a $500 iPad for $240
Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports:
Silicon Valley's teardown analysts these days don't even wait for the body to arrive before publishing their autopsy reports.
....iSuppli, an El Segundo, Calif., company that specializes in so-called virtual teardowns... estimates that Apple's mark-up ranges from 117% for the low end unit to $147% for the high. The most profitable model would appear to be the mid-range, 3G-ready 32-GB iPad, with a sticker price of $729 and an estimated manufacturing cost of $287.15.
[Editor's note: Should provide plenty of wiggle-room for those rumored iPad price cuts after the initial "gotta have it now" early adopters windfall is skimmed off Ed.]

iPad Component Costs Leave Room for Price Cuts
BusinessWeek's Arik Hesseldahl reports that Apple may pay as little as $219.35 for the new tablet's parts, says iSuppli. That leaves room to cut the price of a device that analysts say may be too expensive.....

How To Speed Up The Internet? Duh, Speed Up The Ads
VentureBeat's Paul Boutin says:
Anyone who manages a website knows that a fraction of a second's delay in load time will cause a significant drop in traffic. Visitors mentally think of the site the same way they do of the line at a Ross department store: No matter how long it actually takes, the wait is off-putting. So they don't click a second page, and they may not come back.
But the biggest cause of slowness on most websites isn't the site's own HTML, it's the ads they call in from someone else's servers......

VMWare vs. Parallels: We Have A Winner (For Now)
MacFixIt's Topher Kessler says:
There are several common implementations of virtualization available for OS X, which allow for you to run Windows and other operating systems on your Mac. These have been convenient, and though they offer "up to" native speeds, there are many times when more-advanced features in modern operating system will cause major performance issues, so how do these programs actually compare?

Flash-free Hulu Will Be Coming To The iPad soon, In Development Now?
9To5Mac's Jonny Evans says:
Sure we know the iPad doesn't support Flash, and sure we know that this means popular video website, Hulu, won't work on the Apple device (though YouTube and Vimeo etc will). Now TechCrunch is reporting (which at least one 9to5mac staffer reckons they've also heard) that Hulu is cooking up an iPad-friendly version of its site which should be ready when the new Apple thingummy hits market.

Your First Apple, Or How It All Began...
TUAW's Victor Agreda, Jr. says:
This week, while a good part of the TUAW team is at Macworld, it's worth considering for a moment how we all came to start using Apple products. The "Switcher" campaign morphed into the "I'm a Mac" campaign, but really the idea is the same: rarely do you see people switching *back* to Windows after using a Mac. Then there's the halo effect from the iPod/iTunes ecosystem, the iPhone, and before all of that there was Apple's dominance in the educational markets and later in the design, publishing and other creative fields. But we all came to Apple in a different way. On the following pages we've published some stories from our Seed contributors on how they came to start using Apple products.

Will Liquid Cooling be Coming to the iMac?
patentlyapple.com says:
The first time that we learned of Apple seriously working on a liquid cooling system for an iMac was in a January 2008 Apple patent. The patent told us that Apple had been working on a liquid cooling system for a future iMac since 2006. To be fair, the system Apple first described, was in context with is an iMac-like docking station. Yet the fact remains that if an iMac-like docking station was on the drawing board for a liquid cooling system in 2008, then the likelihood of that extending to the iMac is nothing short of being a no-brainer. Why would Apple want to add liquid cooling to the iMac? Because with Apple now adopting true Intel desktop chipsets for the iMac, we keep hearing about heat issues – and it's only going to be getting worst as time goes on.....

Apple's iPad for Business Is Being Underestimated
Seeking Alpha's Jason Schwarz says:
After testing the iPad out, I'm convinced that the media, the analysts, the market, and maybe even Apple themselves are missing the most important element of the device. We keep hearing the same theories repeated over and over that describe the iPad as a niche e-reader and gaming device that might sell a couple million units in 2010 and a few more in 2011. The prevailing assumption is that nobody really needs an iPad like they need a laptop or a phone. After all, the iPad is for entertainment purposes only, right? It's time to correct those assumptions.

10 Ways Windows 7 Will Beat Back the Mac OS X Challenge
eWeek says:
Although Apple touts Mac OS X as a fine alternative to Windows, its chances of capturing major market share away from Microsoft's OS are getting smaller by the day. Windows 7 is enjoying major success. As a result Apple will find it is harder to make inroads among corporate PC users....
As exciting as Apple's success might be, perhaps it's time to focus on Microsoft... as 2010 progresses and market share figures change throughout the world, it will be Windows 7, not Mac OS X that will be gaining market share.
Windows 7 will stifle any chances for Mac OS X to capture market share. Let's take a look at why:
1. Windows Vista is in the past
2. Windows 7 is a fine OS
3. Mac OS X is lacking
4. Vendor support
5. The enterprise is key
6. Vendors are starting to understand design
7. Affordability comes into play
8. It's the feature set
9. Microsoft won't repeat past mistakes
10. Windows XP mode

The New York Post's Peter Lauria reports:
He's not regularly accused of being an industry leader, but Warner Music Group CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. is the lone person in media - let alone music - willing to throw jabs at Steve Jobs.
Bronfman again took aim at the Apple CEO's increasing power over digital media consumption on WMG's first-quarter earnings call yesterday.
