Rumored 'Snow Leopard' May Supposedly Be The Cat's Meow, Possibly Without The Roar (Perhaps)

MacUser's Dan Pourhadi says:

The rumors are coming! The rumors are coming!

And not just any rumors, either - actual Mac rumors, something we haven't had much of in a long, long—long long long long - time. iPhone rat bastard hogging all the spotlight, acting all fancy with its SDKs and "leaked" photos. Apple still makes the Mac, people, and it's a damn good product too....

These latest rumors - which I've been instructed to firmly present as speculation - suggest Apple may actually debut the next major revision to Mac OS X, 10.6, allegedly dubbed "Snow Leopard," at WWDC, where they will purportedly offer a pre-release seed to developers.

Why presumedly pick a cat with such a similar name, instead of something totally different like, say, Bobcat, or Siamese? The blog duo claims the simple addition of "Snow" is to ostensibly downplay the perception of majorness of the next major update..... Which, frankly, sounds brilliant: OS X's feature set is pretty awesome as-is…wouldn't it be great if the stuff already there worked a whole lot better, faster, and more like it's supposed to? Answer: Yes.

[I'll second that. Ed.]

Rumor: Mac OS X 10.6 to debut at WWDC 08?

TUAW's Cory Bohon says:

TUAW has received some information that suggests Apple may be working to seed developers with an early build of Mac OS X 10.6 at this year's WWDC. 10.6 will not include any new significant features from 10.5; instead, Apple is focusing solely on "stability and security."

We have also learned that OS X 10.6 may go gold master by December 2008 in an effort to start shipping it in January '09 at Macworld Expo. Mac OS X 10.6 will be a milestone release for Apple, as it will leave the PowerPC behind: a fully 64-bit clean, Intel-only Mac OS X.

Mac OS X 10.6 Code Named Snow Leopard, May Be Pure Cocoa

Ars Technica's Jacqui Cheng says:

The next version of Mac OS X is code-named "Snow Leopard," and will indeed be Intel-only, we have learned. This info is hot on the heels of TUAW's original scoop about Mac OS X 10.6 being readied for shipment as soon as Macworld 2009 and being Intel-only.

People familiar with the situation have confirmed to us that TUAW's details are true - Snow Leopard is currently on track to come out during next January's Macworld, and it will not contain major OS changes. Instead, the release is heavily focused on performance and nailing down speed and stability.....

Jaqui also notes:
"There may be some disagreement here as to what exactly 'Cocoa-only' means, so take that into account when thinking about this. For example, Apple may only axe Carbon UI stuff."

Left Behind by Mac OS X or Up to Date with Linux?

Low End Mac Dan Knight says:

I have very mixed feeling about Mac OS X 10.6, whatever kind of cat they name it after.

Rumor has it that it will be an Intel-only operating system, leaving all PowerPC Macs behind. And it will be demonstrated and an early version seeded at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC). And it should be out before the 2010 WWDC.

It's inevitable that Apple is someday going to drop support for PowerPC Macs in its operating system. Apple added Intel support to Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) in 2006, and Leopard (10.5) is the first fully universal version of the Mac OS, supporting both Intel and PowerPC processors.....

The first Intel-based Macs were introduced in January 2006, and it wasn't until August 2006 that the Mac Pro was introduced to replace the last generation Power Mac G5. I honestly can't see Apple discontinuing support for a 3-year-old computer - 3-1/2 years minimum, and 4 years is more likely. That would put the release of the first Intel-only version of Mac OS X in the January 2010 Macworld Expo to June 2010 WWDC range

A very late 2009 release (October or November) is the earliest I can imagine Apple abandoning PowerPC with a new version of OS X - maybe two years after the introduction of Leopard.
Mac OS X 10.6......

While some Mac users will gladly move forward to OS X 10.6 when it ships, just as many have already embraced Leopard, some will be left behind - and as their version of Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, or 10.5 grows increasingly outdated by new apps, we may see more and more low-end Mac users looking into Linux (which is free and offers up-to-date apps) as a viable alternative to Apple's operating systems on their aging hardware.

Funny, isn't it, how Apple will leave your hardware behind while the Linux community will keep you up to date.

Mac OS 10.6 to be Intel only?

The Apple Core's Jason D. O'Grady says:

There's a rumor circulating that Apple may either demo or release to developers a build of Mac OS 10.6 that's fully 64-bit clean and Intel-only......

....what will developers do? Will they continue to develop "universal" versions of their applications, or will they follow Apple's lead and leave PowerPC owners in the dark?

The Mac Night Owl: The 10.6 Report: Time for Apple to Drop PowerPC Support?

Before I get started with this commentary, let me assure you that I never take any of my predictions seriously. Yet it seems as if The Night Owl caught a wave with one particular article, and now other sites, including the standard rumor sources, are getting into the act.
