Apple Releases Safari 3.1 - Claimed to Be The World's Fastest Browser

Apple yesterday introduced Safari 3.1, claming it to be the world's fastest web browser for Mac and Windows PCs. Safari loads web pages 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2. Safari also runs JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers, and is the first browser to support the latest innovative web standards needed to deliver the next generation of highly interactive Web 2.0 experiences*. Safari 3.1 is available immediately as a free download at http://www.apple.com/safari for both Mac OS X and Windows.

"Safari 3.1 for Mac and Windows is blazingly fast, easy to use and features an elegant user interface," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "And best of all, Safari supports the latest audio, video and animation standards for an industry-leading Web 2.0 experience."

To update to Safari 3.1, use Apple Software Update or a standalone installer (your editor highly recommends the latter). You only need to use one of these methods to update your computer.

Software Update will automatically check for the latest Apple software using the Internet. (You might have followed a Software Update link to this article to learn more about the update.) If your computer is not up-to-date, other available software updates will appear.

Download the update installer and run it manually. This is a useful option when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once (or just if you want to minimize the potential for problems Ed.).

You can find it here:

Safari 3.1 is available immediately as a free download at http://www.apple.com/safari for both Mac OS X and Windows users. Safari software updates are delivered seamlessly through Apple's Software Update application, which automatically checks for updates.

Safari 3.1 for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X Leopard or Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.11, a minimum of 256MB of memory and is designed to run on any Intel-based Mac or a Mac with a PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor and built-in FireWire. Safari 3.1 for Windows requires Windows XP or Windows Vista, a minimum of 256MB of memory and a system with at least a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor.

(*)Performance will vary based on system configuration, network connection and other factors. HTML and JavaScript benchmarks based on VeriTest's iBench Version 5.0 using default settings running on an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system running Windows XP, with 1GB of RAM.

Safari 3.1 busts out HTML 5 support, offline storage

Ars Technica's Jacqui Cheng reports:

Apple rang in this Tuesday morning with a Safari 3.1 announcement for both Mac and Windows, which the company claims "loads web pages 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2." (No thanks to those hidden APIs? *cough*) Apple also claims that Safari 3.1 is capable of running JavaScript "up to six times faster" than other browsers.

But what does it really do?....

Is Safari 3.1 any good? We get hands on

tech.co.uk's Dan Grabham reports:

Apple has announced a final build of its version 3 Safari web browser for Mac and PC. But is it worth you even looking at it? The question, of course, is whether it offers anything over and above the well-worn alternatives.

If you use a Mac, you'll likely download it anyway whereas if you're on a PC you probably won't. But put aside your initial thoughts while we pose the real question - whether or not it can outfire Firefox on both the Mac and the PC as well as batter the long-beleaguered Internet Explorer on the PC.

Let's deal with Apple's main claim first: that it's faster than both browsers at rendering web pages.....While such figures might seem slightly outlandish, they're actually not in practice.

Troubleshooting Safari 3.1: Crashes, Won't Load Pages, Utilities Broken

MacFixIt says:

Try standalone download If you've installed Safari 3.1 via Software Update and are experiencing problems, try using the standalone download to reinstall the package before pursuing other troubleshooting procedures.

Apple Safari 3.1 on Windows XP

The Small Wave reports:

I've been running the betas of Safari on Windows ever since they came out. Overall I like Safari on Windows though it's bit sluggish, which I attributed partially to being a beta.

Today Apple released Safari 3.1 on Mac and Windows. My primary interest was on Windows, where I still use Firefox most of the time.

Having used it only briefly I have the following observations:
o Speed is much improved, and is overall faster than Firefox when loading pages side by side....

The Mac Night Owl: Safari 3.1: Not Quite the Ultimate Browser
