Does Apple Have a Laptop Ghetto Problem?

My First Mac's Chris Kerins says:

What stands out to me is that the new models reduce the variety of options while keeping some old styles available at either end of the price range. On one hand, it's good that these price points and sizes are still being represented, but on the other, I have to wonder if there will be confusion for the consumer when they are in the store and seeing two generations of styles side by side. I imagine it will bring up several questions....

By not defining the relationship of the old to the new, Apple risks letting the white MacBooks appear as a second tier machine, much like the eMacs were in their day....

On the other end of the spectrum, Apple is still selling an updated MacBook Pro 17" model at the same price. There is no new 17" model with the new features. Again, this feels like a clearance move without the associated price reduction. I think I'd feel like a sucker buying the old 17" model at the highest price point of $2,799.....

At one time, PC laptops were just under $1000 and MacBooks were just over $1000 which was fine then. But now PC laptops have gone under $500 and Apple has had no response. Hmmm

Apple Introduces Pricey New MacBooks

Forbes' Brian Caulfield says:

Steve Jobs would make a terrible politician. Democrat Barack Obama is promising a 90-day moratorium on foreclosures. Republican John McCain is promising to refinance your mortgage. Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, however, refuses to pander.

If you want the sleek metal machine Jobs introduced Tuesday at Apple's Cupertino, Calif., campus, you'll have to pay at least $1,299, economy be damned.

Apple shares fell $4, or 3.63%, to $106.26 as Apple's management team wrapped up their presentation and took questions from the crowd.

The notebooks aren't a sudden break from Apple's old models - at least in terms of price points - but Apple's line of notebooks hardly needs a shakeup. Jobs has been steadily stealing business from Dell, Hewlett-Packard and other old rivals in the PC business. And notebooks have been Jobs' preferred tool for this bit of larceny - laptop sales account for roughly 29% of Apple's sales this year, according to analysts, up from just 22% in 2006.....

Apple Details New MacBook Manufacturing Process

Appleinsider's Prince McLean reports:

Apple's new MacBook and MacBook Pro feature precision unibody enclosures milled from an extruded block of aluminum, allowing them to get even thinner while retaining rigid durability and a stronger, cleaner, and more polished design. Here's a detailed overview of the process, illustrated with photos.....

Apple MacBook Aluminum And Glass Super-shiny Hands-on

Engadget's Ryan Block reports:

We just got our grubby, oily hands all over this pristine, all glass and aluminum MacBook. We sullied it on your behalf, but our initial impressions mostly positive: it's small, incredibly, ridiculously solid feeling, and we actually don't hate the all-clicking trackpad much at all.....

Apple Reduces MacBook Price to $999 to Woo Shoppers

Bloomberg's Connie Guglielmo reports:

Apple Inc. plans to offer its first Macintosh notebook priced at less than $1,000 this holiday shopping season to attract budget-conscious U.S. consumers stung by the global economic crisis.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs cut the price on the current MacBook models to $999 today at an event at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California. He also introduced an aluminum-clad version with a glass display that will sell for $1,299 and updated the MacBook Pro line with slimmer models.

The stock fell 5.6 percent. Investors may be concerned the price reduction won't be big enough to persuade consumers to buy amid the economic slump, said Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster. Apple gets half its revenue from the Mac, with laptop sales climbing at more than twice the pace of desktops last year. ....

"People wanted a price cut," Munster, based in Minneapolis, said in an interview today. ``They wanted $900 MacBooks."....

Apple Revamps MacBook as 13in MacBook Pro

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

....a new-look MacBook that ditches the familiar white and black plastic styling and becomes just a small-screen MacBook Pro.

The 13.3in MacBook has the same look and basic specs as the 15.4in MacBook Pro, also announced today.

Apple Takes Wraps Off Rumour-matching MacBook Pros

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

Yes, the new MacBooks are made from bricks of aluminium, the better to make the machines not only thinner - 0.95in - but also more rigid and more resistant to knocks and bumps too. It also cuts the number of structural parts by half, making the machines cheaper to maker and, stressed Jobs, more ecologically sound too.

Comparing New to Old, Apple MacBook is Killer; MacBook Pro Less So

The Apple Blog's Tom Reestman says:

I'm not going to dwell on the base MacBook that's now $999. It was a fine machine yesterday, and for $100 less it still is. The lower price may also appeal especially to schools, etc. that may be buying in bulk.

No, the real action today is in the rest of the MacBooks and of course the new 15? MacBook Pro as well. When comparing these models, it's clear that the new MacBook is a huge improvement over the older model, but that the MacBook Pro is not as significant a change. Let's take a quick look

Apple Fails to Deliver, Rally Fizzles

Blogger Zachary Bass says:

Now I'm not saying that Apple caused the stock market rally to fizzle, but I think a case could be made that as the de facto leader of Tech, Apple's refresh of their notebook lineup did nothing to stem the tide of the rally. Maybe that's a little unfair in that the rally lost steam only minutes into the market open, and Apple's CEO Steve Jobs didn't take the stage to hawk his new notebooks until about 1 p.m. EST.

Although Apple's new notebooks are awesome pieces of engineering, the laser-tooled bricks really deflated my expectations, and I'm sure the expectations of many analysts and Apple faithful as well. Look, it's really cool that the new case is a single piece of aluminum, precision manufactured with CNC machines, just like NASA gadgets and all, and I suppose the new glass track pad is a step into my Touch future. But the specs of the machines in this lineup are little changed from their prequels, and the pricing does not make me want to run down to my local Apple Store and empty my pockets. What happened to an $800 MacBook?

Apple's New Laptops: Not So Exciting, But Boy Are They Kicking Microsoft's Hiney

Portfolio.com says:

kevin maney writes: apple has done a phenomenal job taking advantage of microsoft's horrendous mistakes in the pc market. its new laptops, introduced today, will continue the trend. but compared to something like the iphone, does anybody who's not a computer hound get excited by anybody's new laptop anymore?

Apple Offers Recessionary Prices On Laptops

MarketWatch says:

Apple Inc. has boldly launched a family of new laptops, including an upgraded model priced below $1,000, just as U.S. consumers are clamping down on their discretionary spending.

The question is whether or not the stunning new MacBook Pros, including one with recessionary pricing (well, for Apple $999 is a bargain) will tempt the Mac faithful and others, who are hunkering down for a long cold recession......

More on Apple's new Mini DisplayPort

The Apple Core's Jason D. O'Grady says:

One of the announcements coming out of Cupertino is that their MacBooks now ship with a new video out port called the Mini DisplayPort (complete with funny capitalization and lack of space between the words). It means that you'll have to remember to bring a US$30 dongle/adapter with you everywhere you go.

Part of the next-generation DisplayPort industry standard, the new Mini DisplayPort can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display and is designed to complement HDMI. The Mini DisplayPort is just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector.....
