New iMacs May Ship Next Week, German And French Sites Suggest

9To5Mac's Jonny Evans reports:

A German Mac retailer is offering deals on its existing iMac stocks, suggesting an attempt to clear inventory as Apple's supply chain sets the stage for new models, potentially this coming week.....

French site MacForever says: (Translated): "But according to various sources, Apple Store would indeed close its doors next Tuesday. On the menu: MacBook, IMac and Mac mini. It is not impossible that Apple took the opportunity to review other models. It could also be a big surprise on the side of the iMac.

Apple Plans Turbocharged Mac Pro Speedster

The Register's Chris Mellor says:

The Mac Pro is the Big Mac, with up to two Nehalem processors and 32GB of RAM producing great graphics processing performance.

But it's a pussy compared to what might be coming. Early next year we could see a 12-core Mac with 128GB RAM that just screams: a Mega Mac, if you will.

Performance Comparison of Major Web Browsers

sixrevisions.com's Jacob Gube says:

The latest versions of the five major most web browsers (Mozilla Firefox 3.5, Google Chrome 3.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0, Opera 10.0, and Apple Safari 4.0) went head to head under six performance indicators: JavaScript speed, average CPU usage under stress, DOM selection, CSS rendering speed, page load time, and browser cache performance. Each web browser was tested three times under an unprimed cache (except for the browser cache performance), and their average value reported in the results.

Google Spins Docs Preview Into Gmail

The Register's Austin Modine reports:

Gmail users who share Google Docs with friends and coworkers now have an easy way to preview documents right inside their inbox.

The crafty folks at Gmail Labs have added a new way to peek at the content of shared Google Docs documents, spreadsheets, and presentations without opening them in another tab or window. The feature follows previous preview features for YouTube videos, Google voice, Yelp reviews, and Flickr and Picasa albums.

Apple-1. Recession-0

Forbes' Brian Caulfield notes that while over the past year, banks have collapsed, PC sales fell, unemployment soared, and Apple CEO Steve Jobs went on a mysterious medical leave for a liver transplant, but meanwhile the company has thrived with sales and earnings down less than everyone else in the industry and actually actually up year-over-year.

Performance Showdown: Windows 7 Vs. Snow Leopard

CNET's Dong Ngo reports that Snow Leopard consistently beats Windows 7 in many general performance areas based on tests with a good stopwatch, a 2.5GHz 15-inch unibody MacBook Pro, two separate 320 GB 5,400 rpm hard drives, and a lot of time, noting that, thanks to this laptop's nice design, it was very easy to swap out the hard drives with the help of a small Phillips-head screwdriver and a tiny torx wrench.

Dong reports that Windows 7 noticeably outdoes Snow Leopard in the 3D image rendering benchmark but in other areas Snow Leopard consistently outdid Windows 7, such as taking only 36.4 seconds to boot up vs. 42.7 seconds for Windows, and Snow Leopard lasting 111 minutes' runtime on a bettery charge as opposed to 78 minutes for Windows 7 lasted, while Snow Leopard managed to stay on for 111 minutes. However he says that performance-wise, Windows 7 is probably the better choice if you're a gamer.

Mac Fanboys Should Get A Life And Some Windows 7 Common Sense

BetaNews's Joe Wilcox says:

I have to laugh at the sudden, slew of Mac bloggers taking swings at Windows 7 and asserting that Macs will continue to sell well after Microsoft's newest OS ships. Feeling a little defensive are we, bros? Their reaction shows worry that the thing they profess against - surging PC sales that swamp Macs - may yet be reality.

Windows 7 is simply Microsoft's best operating system ever. Mac fanboys should worry and circle together in defensive posture.....

Windows 7 Provides A Better Ride For The Money Than XP Or Mac OS X - Opinion

ChannelWeb's Steven Burke says that in the manifold comparisons of Windows 7 with Snow Leopard et al. what all the reviewers and pundits seem to be forgetting is that it's not about the operating system. The operating system is simply the engine that runs the PC. As Burke puts it, you don't go into a car dealership and buy an engine. You buy a car, and in his opinion, starting Oct. 22, there will be no better ride for the money than Windows.

How to Connect Some VGA Macs to Analog HDTVs

Low End Mac's Dan Bashur says:

If you read my earlier article, Teaching an Old iMac Some New Tricks, you may have noted the potentials I mentioned in regards to connecting my iMac G3 to an external display within a home entertainment center. Potentially using a slot-load iMac G3 as a gaming device in conjunction with your HDTV is an option, courtesy of the VGA output on the iMac - but it won't be as easy as you think if you own an older TV....

iPod nano (1st Generation): Rare Cases Of Battery Overheating

A new Apple Knowledge Base article says:

Apple has determined that in very rare cases, batteries in the iPod nano (1st generation) sold between September 2005 and December 2006, may overheat and prevent the iPod nano from working and deform it.

Apple has received very few reports of such incidents, and the issue has been traced to a single battery supplier. Additionally, there have been no reports of such incidents with any other iPod nano model. If your battery shows signs of overheating, such as discoloration or deformity, stop using the iPod nano immediately and contact AppleCare as soon as possible for further assistance.
