Apple Notebook Shipments Up 61 Percent

Macworld's Jim Dalrymple reports:

A new report from market research firm DisplaySearch shows Apple's notebook shipments grew 61 percent from the first quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008. Shipments rose from almost 900,000 to just over 1.4 million.

The growth puts Apple in seventh place in overall notebook market share with 4.6 percent. HP (20.8 percent), Dell (15.1 percent), Acer (14.6 percent), Toshiba (9.3 percent), Lenovo (7.5 percent), and Fujitsu-Siemens (5.2 percent) all had higher market share numbers. Asus (4.3 percent) and Sony (4.2 percent) rounded out the list behind Apple.

The growth rate from 2007 to 2008 tells a different story. Apple is second overall in growth behind Asus, which grew 67 percent. Lenovo is the only other company that was close coming in with 58 percent growth.

Shootout: 500GB Notebook Drives Samsung versus Hitachi

BareFeats rob-ART morgan reports:

Two exciting new SATA notebook drives with 500GB capacity are causing a stir. We benchmarked them against each other using a SATA notebook drive enclosure and SATA ExpressCard/34 on our MacBook Pro "Penryn."...

The Samsung 500G notebook drive is slower overall than the Hitachi 500G notebook drive but has the advantage of being thinner (9.5 mm vs 12.5 mm). That means that the Samsung will fit ALL laptops and notebook enclosures while the Hitachi will only fit SOME..... I understand from one reader that the Hitachi does fit nicely inside his MacBook Pro.

OS X Snow Leopard Feature Roundup

MacLife's Michael Simon reports:

For the past seven years, cutting-edge Apple users have been spoiled by a constant stream of features and enhancements that have kept Mac OS X fresh and exciting. While putting the brakes on what once was an annual update, Apple has managed to keep rolling out significant OS upgrades worthy of their $129 price tags, and Mac devotees have become accustomed to watching Steve Jobs ceremoniously pull back the curtain on round after round of killer apps....

Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard - scheduled to ship in about a year - builds on Leopard's enormous innovations by delivering a new generation of core software technologies that will streamline Mac OS X, enhance its performance, and set new standards for quality.

But despite the lack of any tangible features to sink our teeth into, Snow Leopard will include some major enhancements (and probably a few surprises along the way) that have all the makings of a must-have upgrade...

Solving The Mystery Of Snow Leopard's Shrinking Apps

AppleInsider's Prince McLean reports:

In response to a report earlier this week pointing out that many of the applications in early builds of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard are dramatically smaller in size, a number of developers have weighed in to explain where all those missing megabytes went.

Bryce C noted that the extra heft in Leopard's apps does indeed come from localization files, which are used to distill all of the text strings and other variables that differ between languages. Depending on the language preference set by the user, the operating system accesses the desired language files and uses them in conjunction with the common application code to simplify developers' work to deploy their apps to worldwide markets.....

Other suspected reasons for the dramatic weight reduction included lighter weight, resolution independent vector graphics and the removal of PowerPC code......

Top Ten Things They Don't Tell You About Switching

airtightinteractive.com says:

So I finally got myself a MacBook Pro. I've had a love / hate relationship with Apple products over the years and I've considered switching for a while. One of the things that turned me off was the Mac fanboys who insist that switching will bring you closer to God. This post is an attempt to give a less biased opinion on the pros and cons of switching.

In my case I'm switching from a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 running Vista to a MacBook Pro running OS X Leopard. Let me know if I've missed anything in the comments.

THE GOOD
1. Design Aesthetic
2. It Just Works
3. Security Handling
4. Power Management
5. Multitouch Trackpad

THE BAD
1. Missing Keys/Too Many Keys
2. No Maximize
3. No Right-Click Button
4. Finder is Lame
5. Cost

The next Apple is ... Apple

BloggingStocks' Georges Yared says:

Apple is one of the great stories of corporate America and the stock market. Under the leadership and genius of Steven Jobs, Apple is emerging as the premier technology growth company of this decade and the next. In the past five years the stock has rocketed from $9 to the current $175, and yet the story is actually stronger than ever before.

Apple has three major legs of growth in its arsenal and a distribution system that is second to none. The products of Apple are both cool and revolutionary. The 2002 introduction of the iPod defined the MP3 player space....

The Mac computer has been re-engineered these past couple of years and is now the rage of the personal computer market. The new Mac is beginning to enter the traditional enterprise sector while maintaining its dominance in the consumer sector......

'Steve Jobs eventually will get old' - Verizon boss

9to5Mac's Andy Space says:

Verizon boss Ivan Seidenberg seems ready to make it personal with Apple CEO Steve Jobs, offering some fairly harsh words for the company and its leader.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Seidenberg, boss of the world's fifth-largest telecoms company, says of Jobs, disparagingly, "Steve Jobs eventually will get old."

Macs (Kind Of) Conquer Business: 80% Of Companies Using Macs

MacUser's Aaron Freedman says:

Remember when people used to say "Macs will never dominate the computer market because businesses won't adopt them"? While we knew all along those people were talking out of their lower back region, now there's some statistics to support our case.

According to a Yankee Group Research Inc. survey of over 700 senior IT admins and executives, 8 in 10 business said they have Macs in-house. Considering that only about two years ago, in early 2006, only 47% of IT professionals used Macs in their business, this is huge news. And, if you're wondering whether these business "using" Macs have only one or two Apple machines, 21% of the surveyed firms said they were using more than 50 Macs......

Jury Convicts Web Site Operator In P2P Case

IDG News Service's Grant Gross

A former administrator at EliteTorrents.org has been convicted of conspiracy and felony copyright infringement in a Virginia court, the first time in the U.S. that a peer-to-peer user has been convicted by a jury of copyright infringement, the U.S. Department of Justice revealed Friday.

Daniel Dove, 26, formerly of Clintwood, Virginia, faces a maximum sentence in prison for his participation in EliteTorrents.org, a Web site that specialized in releasing copyright works without authorization, the DOJ said. EliteTorrents, which ceased operating in May 2005, used BitTorrent peer-to-peer technology to distribute pirated copies of movies, software, music and video games, the DOJ said.

Apple Proposes Translucency To Solve "Window Overlap" Problem

AppleInsider's Sam Oliver reports:

Window-based information systems like the Mac OS X Finder face a common problem called "window overlap." Apple in a new patent filing suggests solving this problem through the use of gradual and manipulative window transparency.

In the 16-page filing made this March, the Mac maker explains that when operating system windows overlap one another, they tend to hide valuable information such as other windows or icons.

Mac Pro SATA Blu-Ray How To

Blogger Carlos Echenique says:

Apple's decision to not offer a Blu-Ray drive as an option on the Mac Pro has been frustrating many users for quite some time. PC users have long enjoyed the expanded storage and high-definition content available on the new format.

This has not stopped enterprising third parties from adding Blu-Ray drives to their systems. The good news is that Apple decided to make the Mac Pro easy to upgrade in the field. The bad news is that Apple chose to use the more traditional (and less expensive) IDE (PATA) interface for it's optical drives. PC motherboard OEMs are cramming more and more SATA ports on their boards, so optical drive makers are switching to SATA as well. This makes it hard to find IDE based Blu-Ray drives.

Enter the gang at Cooldrives.com with their SATA-PATA adaptor board. This little gem plugs into the back of the SATA Blu-Ray drive and allows you to easily install it in the Mac Pro.

ZDNet Overclocking Tool Enhances Performance Of Mac Pro

ZNET Germany reports:

When the first IBM PC clones that were clocked faster than the original at 4.77 MHz appeared in the eighties, games freaks noticed that many of their games became faster. The Cessna 182 of the Sublogic flight simulator flew at the speed of a Eurofighter. So the bus clock speed is in principle not a good source for real time.

Microsoft has now learned this, but clearly Apple has not. If you carry out benchmarks such as Cinebench or Geekbench after overclocking, the benchmarks do not indicate any improvement in performance at first. But if you resort to a stopwatch, the higher performance resulting from overclocking can indeed be verified. You also notice that the system clock runs significantly faster after overclocking the computer.

MSI Wind Running Mac OS X Also Thinks It's a Mac Pro

Gizmodo reports:

It's not even out yet and people have already hacked Mac OS X to run on the MSI Wind. Like with other non-Apple Leopard boxes, the little computer believes it is a Mac Pro, which is OK because we all want to be Mac Pros when we grow up. This version is still lacking some fine tuning, but it runs quite well according to Insanely Mac forum member Jav:

"Well, here it is. The new MSI Wind running Kalyway 10.5.2 (modified Leopard install). I still have to make some small adjustments, like the resolution and the wireless network card, but I couldn't resist posting these images that I'm sure will get the interest of more than one person. Ethernet and Bluetooth work right out of the box, so I'm really expecting a lot from this small notebook...."

Santa Rosa MacBook Pros Experience Video Failures

MacNN reports:

Owners of Santa Rosa-based MacBook Pros are suffering from video failures, reports claim. Victims say that the problem arises after waking or rebooting a Pro, at which point the computer may suddenly stop displaying video, whether on its native LCD or an attached monitor....

AppleCare is said to be recommending a replacement of a Pro's logic board, but those who have have gone through with the procedure note that the fix may only be temporary, as the display can quickly go blank a second time.....

Living with the MacBook Pro

David Alison says:

It's now been a couple of weeks since I bought a MacBook Pro and handed my MacBook down to my youngest daughter. In that time I've used the MBP quite a bit and overall I'm quite happy with the upgrade. The only issue that I've had with it has been the heat it generates, though to a large degree I haven't really noticed it any longer. Either my left wrist has adjusted to being slightly warmer than my right wrist or the Fan Control I installed has helped keep the machine running a little cooler. I actually believe it's a bit of both.

Ubuntu Hardy Heron on a Mac Mini

rfdlinux.wordpress.com says:

My broadband connection was barely 24 hours old when work began on migrating to the latest version of Ubuntu. Hardy Heron, as it's called, is very nice on the Mini. What follows is how I did it, what I used, what worked, and what didn't.

24 hours after the install, I could not be more pleased. I am listening to a CD, blogging, charging my Sansa Fuse MP3 player, and glad to be free of Apple's OS X. The install went well, and the only real glitch was an issue with the Apple keyboard. It was relatively quick and painless, and things are working just fine at the moment.

The Mac Night Owl: Yes, Many Businesses Are Using Macs

One common objection to Macs might be called the “McDonalds argument,” which posits that, since Windows occupies more than 90% of the world’s personal computers, they have to be the best. The public says so.

Regarding windows overlap, the answer is NOT translucency, the answer is window-shading. Bring back window-shading that existed in OS9, were you double-click the apps top bar and the whole window closes into a thin bar. Like a window shade rolled up. Until Apple wakes up, we will have to use Unsanity’s excellent WindowShade shareware.
