What Bill Gates Wrote To The Dying Steve Jobs
The Telegraph's Mary Riddell says that Microsoft's founder has become "the people's plutocrat," pledging to pupils at a south London school he visited last week that ninety-nine percent of his personal fortune, estimated at $40 billion, will be given away.
Ms. Riddell also quotes Bill Gates commenting on his sometimes stormy relationship with the late Steve Jobs, saying:
"Steve was an incredible genius who contributed immensely to the field I was in. We had periods, like the early Macintosh, when we had more people working on it than they did. And then we were competitors [but] we enjoyed each [others' work]....
"He spent a lot of his time competing with me. There are lots of times when Steve said [critical] things about me. If you took the more harsh examples, you could get quite a litany...."
However, Gates relates that in 2007 he and Jobs did an event together, and "he couldn't have been nicer," and that some months before Jobs's death, Gates paid him a long visit during which Gates says the two IT titans spent literally hours reminiscing and talking about the future. Later, with Jobs's death imminent, Gates wrote to him, affirming how he should feel great about what he had done and the company he had built, as well as Jobs's children, who Gates had got to know, but the letter was not a gesture of conciliation, since "There was no peace to make. We were not at war. We made great products, and competition was always a positive thing. There was no [cause for] forgiveness."
Gates adds that after Jobs's death, his widow Laurene called to tell him that Jobs had appreciated the letter and kept it by his bed.

Designed & built in the US from domestic & imported parts, these drives feature"
Chip Based Data Encryption: 128-bit AES-compliant;
Intelligent "recycling" for advanced free space management.
Best in class error correction (ECC) and SandForce RAISE (Redundant Array of Independent Silicon Elements) technology provides RAID-like data protection and reliability without loss of transfer speed due to parity.
SandForce Processor with 7% over-provisioning maximizes read and write performance to greatly extend the endurance and overall reliability of the drive.
Up to 100X greater data protection than what the highest rated enterprise class conventional hard disk drive (HDD) provides.
SandForce DuraClass technology with Ultra-efficient Block Management & Wear Leveling offers highest endurance, performance and power efficiency in a SSD.
Some of the drive space in OWC SSDs are allocated for RAISE - which provides real time data redundancy, ECC Error Correction, and reserve cell space. Example: An OWC Mercury Aura Pro Express that's 240GB in size with 7% over-provisioning is actually a 256GB drive with 7% allocated for data management, and to maintain the drive's high-performance level.
Unlike most SSDs on the market today, the OWC Mercury Aura Pro Express uses advanced DuraWrite wear-leveling and block management technologies to keep Read/Write performance at peak while others see performance fall.

Bean 3.0.5 Free Word Processor Update Released
Bean 3 is a small, easy-to-use and free rich text editor and lightweight word processor designed to make writing convenient, efficient and comfortable. A fairly extensive bugfix version 3.0.5 release is now available.

Lean, fast and uncluttered, Bean starts up quickly, has a live word count, page layout mode, full-screen mode, regular expression search/replace, multi-column text, inline graphics, detailed statistics, and much more, and its user interface is easy on the eyes. While MS Word, OpenOffice, etc. try to be all things to all people, sometimes you just want the right tool for the job. That's Bean's niche. For example, Bean doesn't do footnotes or use stylesheets and is only partially compatible with Word's file formats. Also, it allows in-line graphics, but not floating graphics.

New in Version 3 are an optional single-window tabbed interface layout, template documents with boilerplate text, a split view, a two-up layout view, freeform headers and footers, plain text editing, and other improvements.

Bean features:
live word count
make template documents with boilerplate text
free-form headers and footers
page layout view (optional 2-up)
alternate colors option (e.g., white text on blue)
split-window editing
full screen editing
date-stamped backups
selection of text by text style, paragraph style, color, etc.
find panel allows regular expressions (pattern matching)
all of Cocoa's good stuff (dictionary, word completion, etc.)
Bean natively reads and writes these file formats:
.rtf format (rich text)
.rtfd format (rich text with graphics)
.bean format (identical to .rtfd)
plain text (Unicode and legacy)
.webarchive format (Apple's web archive format)
Bean transparently imports and exports these formats:
.doc format (MS Word '97, minus images, margins, and page size)...more info here
.docx format (Word 2007, minus images and some formatting)...more info here
.odt format (OpenDocument, minus images, margins, and page size)
Bean can export all of the above formats to these formats:
.html (web page format)
.doc compatible (with images intact)
New in Version 3.0.5:
Added a work-around to avoid crashes on Leopard involving fontSetChanged
message (20120112-1).
Lion's dictionary popover can become stuck when a full screen window is closed or switched away from, causing a crash. Fixed (20120124-1).
Attached sheets (Save panel, etc.) can become lost when a full screen window is closed or switched away from. Fixed (20120108-1, 20120122-1).
Replaced _blinkCaret override with yet another fix when moving text views between windows (20120112-2). This might also fix the mysterious missing text cursor problem.
Paste Font Family & Ruler menu item now enables itself correctly (20120108-2).
Fixed a regression in Bean 3.0.4 where Review Changes before Quitting > Discard Changes could momentarily show a Do You Want to Save the Changes You Made in the Document? alert on one document (20120123-1).
Fixed a bug where the Show Info panel could reappear unexpectedly when switching document windows after its being closed with the close button (20120126-1).
Undo now restores paragraph attributes changed after a deleted paragraph break (20120119-1).
The Inspectors font popup menu now reloads when the available fonts change (20120122-2).
The Inspector now shows the typing attributes at the text cursor (i.e., the text attributes to be applied if text is typed there) rather than the attributes of the character following the text cursor (20120125-1).
Added Polish localization. Thanks Wanarek!
Note on the Dictionary Popup Crash under Lion -
An OS X bug causes the dictionary popover in Lion to become stuck when the user preference controlling the zoom-open window animation is turned off,
followed by an immediate crash (but only on apps not compiled for Lion only). The following terminal command fixes the problem, but also re-enables the animation (change YES to NO to disable it again):

System requirements:
OS X 10.5 Leopard, 10.6 Snow Leopard, or 10.7 Lion
An older version (2.4.5) is still available compatible with OS X Tiger 10.4+

DriveSavers Data File Recoveries for Apple Users Tops Six Billion
DriveSavers has announced that the company has recovered over six billion data files for Apple users since the company's inception over twenty-five years ago. Six billion data files are equivalent to the amount of data stored in the Library of Congress, one of the largest databases in the world. Videos, digital photos, financial files, personal documents, address book contacts, calendar entries and music are examples of the types of data that is recovered.
Scott Gaidano, president of DriveSavers, lost business critical files on a Mac floppy disk many years ago. Disappointed and frustrated, Gaidano along with Jay Hagan, decided to attempt to recover the data which lead to the two gentlemen starting their own data recovery business. Today, DriveSavers recovers data from iPads, iPhones, iPods and essentially any storage device (Apple or non-Apple related) that has suffered common or catastrophic data loss. DriveSavers has pioneered the data recovery industry by demonstrating best practices, methods and security standards for recovering data safely and securely.
As innovative Apple products continue to emerge and become immersed in the mainstream of businesses and consumers, DriveSavers anticipates that more critical data will be stored on these amazing devicesand lost due to user error, physical damage, mismanagement and software or hardware failure. And, we anticipate that recovering the data will become progressively complex, especially with the use of SSD technology in many of these products such as the iPad and iPhone. DriveSavers claims to have more expertise, technology and capabilities to successfully recover data from Flash memory-based solid-state devices than any other data recovery company.
