Apple Corporate Finally Calls Rush Limbaugh About His Mac Trouble

Rush Limbaugh says:

I have an announcement to make: Apple corporate called. Somebody from high up the corporate ladder at Apple Computer in California, out in Cupertino, called the office... very, very, very nice guy, put my IT guy in touch with them, working - No, it was not Algore.... I'm not going to mention the gentleman's name because the Mac user community that hates me will start bombarding this guy......

Finally, Leopard - Uninstall SideTrack First

Infoworld's Paul Venezia says:

I'm not the kind of guy that leaps on new operating systems before the shrink wrap has shrunk. I like to let others take the lumps of a .0 release before I subject my core laptops and workstations to the latest and greatest. Thus, I kept my 17" MacBook Pro on Tiger until this evening.

I probably would have stayed there for awhile longer if I hadn't picked up a MacBook Air. I've been using it daily since I got it, switching back to the 17" when I needed the screen space (heavy coding, lots of RDP connections, etc), and I found that several of the features in Leopard were too good to pass up, especially spaces and the spring-loaded dock folders....

The system updated successfully and rebooted. Happy that things looked like they had gone well, I started to log in - but had no keyboard....

Then I remembered that I'd installed SideTrack......

Best Buy Runs Dry Of 15-inch MacBook Pro

Electronista reports:

Retailer Best Buy is no longer stocking any 15-inch MacBook Pro online, according to reader reports. The mid-range 2.4GHz model is listed as "sold out" and therefore unavailable; the base 2.2GHz version is listed as backordered and unavailable for between 1-2 weeks. Additionally, while the 17-inch MacBook Pro remains openly listed and immediately available, neither of the smaller versions are visible from Best Buy's section for the high-end notebooks.....

Previous news has suggested that Apple is one of a host of companies that are believed to be upgrading to 45 nanometer Core 2 Duo processors based on Intel's Penryn architecture sometime this month........

What's New in OS X Leopard

PCMag's Edward Mendelson reports:

The latest update to the Apple OS X "Leopard" operating system makes the strongest case yet for PC users to switch from Windows....

....When I reviewed Leopard two days after its initial release I called it the best operating system ever made for the vast majority of users. I think that's even more true now that 10.5.2 fixes some of the first-release glitches that annoyed me in 10.5 and in Apple's first, quick, bug-fix update 10.5.1. Whether this is the update that can prompt hesitating Windows users to switch to the Mac is another question that I'll get to in a moment.

The Danger In Trying Out New Mac Software

Mac 360's Ron McElfresh says:

Buyer beware. Everyone is out to sell you something. Or, in the case of Mac software, they're out to get you to try before you buy.

Sometimes the Mac software we try out hasn't been tried out enough. Is there danger in trying new software on your Mac?

The answer, of course, is an unqualified yes, there is always a danger that putting new software on your Mac will cause some kind of malfunction and fry all the rest of the files on your Mac.

Recycle Old Computers by Repurposing Them, Not Retiring Them

Low End Mac's John Hatchett says:

In many, many ways I am preaching to the choir here. If you are an avid reader of Low End Mac (and who isn't?), I can't help but think that you are predisposed to hang on to your old computer until the last possible moment and even then pass it on to a family member or friend in need.

Now I don't know why Mac users are more sentimental than PC owners, but I will note that there doesn't seem to be a site called Low End PC on the web. [Editor's note: We tried, but nobody cared. dk] Perhaps it is just the huge number of hardware manufacturers on the PC side.

I don't really know why this is so, but I know most of this site's readership will get a little misty eyed when I mention that my student aide just dusted off one of our Mac Classics (in our little Mac museum on campus) and started it up. Yep, it worked. And no, you can't buy it from me - it's not mine.

Technology no longer marches on - at this point it's a sprint. Today's cutting edge computer becomes tomorrow's landfill.

Apple users are no longer immune to attack, as cyber criminals begin to target Macs.

At least that's what 350 computer users surveyed by IT security Sophos believed, following the first financially motivated malware attack on Mac OX. Some 93% of the respondents thought that Apple Macs would come under the attack from hackers, compared to 79% two years ago.

Hey Readers, Are Mac People Still Smug,And Windows Folks Still Neanderthals?

ZNet blogger Russell Shaw says:

Chris Pirillo- who has managed to perfect the oft-contrary arts of thinking fast and thinking deeply, is out with his list of 50 Reasons To Switch From Windows To Mac OSX

I'd like to start a conversation informed by Pirillo's Reason #11:

The Apple community has been infiltrated by enough people who aren't smug. You're not better than me just because you run another OS or support another vendor, nor are you any less of a geek. Not every Windows user is a neanderthal, although some of their dated arguments would make them out to be. I think that most consumers are caught up in the idea that you NEED Windows for everything at home. You don't.

OK, let us track through this one.....

The Mac Night Owl: The Mac Is On Top Again!

That tired cliché states that little things mean a lot and when Apple removed the word “Computer” from the corporate name, many people understandably believed that Macs were going to be set on the backburner, letting them fend for itself, more or less.
