Sonnet Releases Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter

Thunderbolt technology offers amazing speed (up to 10Gb/s) and versatility, supporting high-resolution displays plus high-performance data devices through a single, compact port. It's next generation I/O technology available today. But what about connecting existing FireWire and eSATA peripherals as well as high speed memory cards?

Sonnet's Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter expands Thunderbolt connectivity to support more than just storage systems and monitors, adding an ExpressCard/34 slot to any computer to which it's connected, enabling you to use a wide variety of ExpressCard/34 cards to add a range of interfaces and capabilities to your system.

image

For example, this adapter lets you add more FireWire ports or an eSATA interface through a single Thunderbolt adapter, allowing you to choose your connections and add more to your setup. Because this adapter supports hot-swapping, you can select and change the ExpressCard to use as needed. It supports most Sonnet ExpressCard/34 cards (with a PCI Express interface), such as their models with FireWire interfaces, CompactFlash and SDXC card readers, and select eSATA controllers. It also will support most specialty bus-interface products like the interface adapter for AJA io Express.

image

Setup for this Sonnet adapter is simple — just connect it directly to your computer or at the end of a Thunderbolt device chain with a Thunderbolt cable (not included, sold at the Apple Store). That's it. There is no software to install and no power supply to plug in. Plug the ExpressCard/34 card into the Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter as you would into a notebook computer's ExpressCard slot, install software for the adapter if necessary, and you're ready to work.

Tech Test Drive: Apple MacBook Air (11-inch, Summer 2011)

CNet.com profiles the 11-inch Apple MacBook Air

The good: The 11-inch Apple (AAPL) MacBook Air is dramatically faster than last year's version, has a backlit keyboard and comes with a high-speed Thunderbolt I/O port.

The bad: The $999 entry-level Air still has the same limited fixed flash storage and RAM as last year's version, and there's still no 3G wireless option.

How to Configure Your Mac's Firewall

MacInstruct's Matthew Cone says:

Every Mac ships with a built-in firewall - a service that can be configured to disallow information from entering your Mac. But what is a firewall, and why do you need to use it on your Mac?...

A firewall can help prevent bad packets from entering your Mac. Hackers love to run automated applications that can scan thousands of computers (including your Mac) for open ports that can be exploited. To ensure that random individuals do not gain unauthorized access to your Mac, you should enable Mac OS X's built-in firewall. It will close your Mac's open ports and disallow random network scans.

Omni Group Releases OmniWeb 5.11.1 Web Browser

OmniWeb is an alternative Web browser based on Apple's WebKit Safari browser engine that supports OS X 10.4.8 through the latest version of OS X 10.7 Lion.

OmniWeb leverages on the full beauty of Mac OS X's Quartz graphics and the Aqua interface with drawers, sheets, customizable toolbars, and more.

Save time and be more productive by using built-in web shortcuts and unique drag-and-drop tabbed windows. Stay organized with workspaces that save web pages you have in your tabs, your history, and even the location of your windows on your screen. Tell OmniWeb how you want the web to work on each individual domain you can choose how to interact with its content, from changing the text size to blocking ads, managing cookies, or telling OmniWeb where to save downloads. Instead of being limited to a standard set of page viewing functions, OmniWeb gives you total control over your entire browsing experience.

Visual tabs

Most browsers have tabs, but OmniWeb builds on the idea of viewing multiple web pages in a single window by offering thumbnails. When you create a new tab in your tab drawer, a thumbnail graphic allows you to easily identify the page. Keep your browsing organized and productive by quickly switching back and forth between them, changing their position in the drawer, creating new tabs on the fly, and even dragging and dropping tabs from one window to another. For those times when you have a lot of pages in a single window, you can change to a list mode so you don't have to scroll.

Workspaces

With OmniWeb's Workspaces feature, your individual browsing sessions can be saved in one convenient location. When you create a workspace, OmniWeb saves information like which web pages you have in your open tabs, your history, and even the location of the windows on your screen. Organize them by dragging and dropping the contents of one workspace to another. Take a snapshot of a workspace and instantly restore the workspace from the snapshot, clearing away any changes made to the workspace in the meantime. You can even share your workspace files with other OmniWeb 5 users.

Ad blocking

You can do much more than simply block ads with OmniWeb. You can choose to view popups only when you ask for them (like if you specifically click a link), you can tell OmniWeb to block any ad content coming from a known ad server, you can block all Flash content, and much more.

Commendably, OmniWeb 5.11.1 still supports Power PC Macs and OS X back to OS 10.4.8.

New in version 5.11.1:
• Improved stability under Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

System requirements:
• PPC / Intel
• Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later

OmniWeb is freeware.
