Apple May Ship Huge Numbers Of New MacBook Air in September

Electronista reports:

Apple is planning a huge ramp in production for a new MacBook Air that could suggest a much more mainstream design, BMO analyst Keith Bachman said today. An investigation into the supply chain suggested that two models are enroute in September that would ship in numbers far larger than for the existing Air.....

Apple Could Roll Out A Couple More MacBook Air Models

Ubergizmo says:

Apple is certainly not going to rest on its laurels when it comes to computer sales, and word on the street has it that another two models are being prepped as we speak, shipping later this September in numbers that will dwarf the current MacBook Air..... It might seem unthinkable to some, but the new MacBook Air models, if they ever roll out, could very well target the mainstream notebook market....

Analyst Sees New iPods, New Airs In September

Barrons' Eric Savitz says:

BMO Capital analyst Keith Bachman... in a research report late yesterday [sees Apple] launching two new iPods in September - a new Touch, and a new Nano....

He also says that Apple will launch two MacBook Airs in September....

How Would Apple Position an 11.6-inch MacBook Air?

Techland's Doug Aamoth says:

We're going to have to connect some dots on this one, but let's explore how Apple might go about
selling an 11.6-inch version of its ultraportbale MacBook Air notebook.

For starters, an analyst named Keith Bachman reportedly said in a recent research report that Apple will be announcing two new MacBook Air models at its press event next month...

So Apple could probably do one of two things. It could risk cannibalizing sales of high-end iPads by pricing the 11.6-inch MacBook Air at, say, $799 or $849, or it could try to slide the machine in somewhere between the $999 MacBook and the $1,499 MacBook Pro [and] risk cannibalizing sales of the MacBook and the $1,199 MacBook Pro model....

Dell Posts Apple Laptop Comparison Chart

Focusing on the back-to-school buyer, Dell has published a chart comparing its Studio 15 and 17 laptops with Apple's size-corresponding MacBook Pro 15" and 17" models. The chart, entitled "Back To School - Apples To Apples Comparison, unsurprisingly casts the Dell machines in a favorable light, leaning particularly heavy on the argument that the Dells sell for a claimed $1249 less than the Macs, and come with certain higher configuration specs.

alt="image" name="image" width="499" height="716" />

To wit, the Dells' display screens are fractionally larger, they're equipped with 1 GB of video RAM vs. the MacBook Pros' 512 MB, and the Studios are available in six colors while you can only get the Macs in "silver." The chart neglets to mention that the Macs' "silver" livery is due to their anodized aluminum unibody architecture and construction, while the Dell Studios have mainly plastic enclosures.

And while the MacBook Pros do come with less graphics memory, they have state of the art Nvidia GeForce GT 330M discrete graphics processor units in addition to the Intel integrated graphics built into the Core i series processors, while the the Dell Studio machines come with a selection of mostly Intel graphics support, although an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 GPU is available. It's unclear from the chart what the graphics support spec. of the Dells is pertaining to the price comparison.

The Dell Studio 17 does come with a Core i7 processor as opposed to the base MacBook Pro 17" model's Core i5 CPU, and with the Dells you get one year of LoJack Laptop Theft Protection coverage in addition to the one-year limited warranty.

It would be foolish to suggest that Dell doesn't have a point about its lower prices for some nominally higher component specs., but you can't (legally) run Mac OS X on a Dell, nor does their bundled Windows  Live Essentials software suite measure up to Apple's iLife apps. in many Mac-users' estimation. Apple also consistently scores significantly higher in laptop user-satisfaction and reliability surveys.

As ever, you tend to get what you pay for, so ya' pays yer money and ya' takes yer choice. It should be noted also that the Dell prices cited incorporate presumably limited-time discount offers, a sales promotion measure Apple rarely resorts to.

Divvy For Mac OS X Window Management Utility

Divvy is an entirely new way of managing your workspace. It allows you to quickly and efficiently "divvy up" your screen into exact portions using a simple drag interface in a dialog which can be conifgured with user-specified shortcuts.

image

With Divvy, it is as simple as calling up the interface, clicking and dragging. When you let go, your window will be resized and moved to the relative position on the screen. If that seems like too much work, go ahead and create as many different shortcuts as you'd like that resize and move your windows in exactly the same way.

image

Divvy is designed to be quick, simple and elegant and to stay out of your way as much as possible while providing the most powerful window management available.

image

A video tutorial on the Divvy Website reveals the elegant simplicity of the concept. A downloadable demo is available. Divvy sells for $14.00.

SMEStorage release Mac Cloud Drive beta 4 For Up To 10 Storage Clouds

[Press Release]

SMEStorage, the UK based multi-cloud data access provider, has released the fourth beta of a Mac Cloud Drive which enables up to 10 commercial storage providers to be accessed directly from a virtual drive in Mac Leopard and Snow Leopard Operating Systems. The drive brings cloud computing directly into the Mac OS with over 10 popular Cloud Storage vendors supported, including Amazon S3, Google Docs, Microsoft SkyDrive and RackSpace Cloud Files.

CEO Ian Osborne states, "We are really pleased to announce the fourth and most robust beta of our virtual cloud drive for the Mac. This drive enables users to access their cloud storage files directly from their shell or Mac file manager"

"We have completely re-written huge parts of the drive in this beta to deal with the nuances of Mac Finder. The result is a huge step forward in our goal of having a robust multi-cloud drive for the Mac OSX. The drive now supports the encryption features of our gateway which can overlay any cloud, as well as giving the ability to generate a URL directly from the desktop."

"The term 'Cloud Gateway' is now becoming a recognized term and we believe we are only at the very beginning of users accessing their data in the cloud directly from the desktop rather than storing data on disparate internal servers. Key to an organizations data strategy in the future will be 'Access Anywhere Anytime'".

"Supporting the Mac is a key part of our strategy to enable a robust cloud-to-desktop- environment on WIndows, Mac and Linux and having a client that works on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry".

"The next beta will continue the hardening of the offering and will incorporate sync-to-desktop above all the clouds we support"

Microsoft Trying to Wean You Off XP

The Ladeland Ledger's Lonnie Brown says:

Linus Van Pelt first appeared with his security blanket in the "Peanuts" comic strip in 1954. Thirty-five years later, Charles Schulz, the strip's creator, said that Linus had finally outgrown his blanket.

Microsoft considers many of you Linus-like users. Your blanket is the XP operating system.

Like Linus' grandmother, Microsoft wishes very much that you would give it up.....

I browsed through these posts on the new Dell laptop that’s buzzing because of its awesome battery life and some of the Apple news. What caught my eye was the mention of the innovative sync software provider, Syncables. I’ve been using Syncables to automatically sync all of my important files (pictures, folders, spreadsheets, videos, email, etc.) across all of my computers. Syncables enables access to data originally created on your Mac from any of your other computers. And, it works perfectly between PC/Mac/Linux. Basically, it makes all of your computers equally useful as each is updated with the most up-to-date folders and media. What’s really cool is that you can use Syncables to dynamically secure backup of all of your data. Plus, you can upload media to Facebook and YouTube from within the application...it really has changed how I use my computers!
