SHOOTOUT: MacBook Air drives - HDD versus SSD
BAREFEATS' rob-ART morgan reports:
Many of you are curious how the two MacBook Air internal drive options compared. Is the Solid State Drive (SSD) worth the extra $999? We've seen Xbench results posted everywhere but we think Speed Tools' QuickBench 4.03 is a more rigorous benchmark. So here's what we learned....

Analyst: Plenty Look, But Not Everyone Buys The MacBook Air
Ars Technica's Chris Foresman reports:
Anyone with much retail experience knows when a pricey new product comes along, lots of people are interested in looking, but few will shell out the cash to buy one. That new $5,000 digital SLR? Everyone wants to pick it up, push all the buttons, and look at the gorgeous new 3" LCD screen on the back. But only a tiny fraction are willing to plop down the green to take it home.
Apparently this retail phenomenon, which I like to call the "Not Everyone Has Massive Income Theory," was recently put to the test by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster while attempting to quantify demand for Apple's latest portable wunderkind.....
As reported by AppleInsider, Munster says that demand for the $1,799 MacBook Air is less than that of the $1,099 MacBook.....

Apple MacBook Air: Size Does Matter
The Telegraph's Claudine Beaumont says:
I don't care what any one tells you: size matters,... and never more so than with technology, which is why Apple's new MacBook Air, the world's thinnest laptop, has proved such a crowd pleaser in the Telegraph office this week.
The diminutive notebook computer, which measures less than 2cm at its thickest point, is certainly a looker.
Of course, as with any technology, there are always some sacrifices to be made.....
But are these missing components really missed? Or does the Air's lightweight ultra-portability make up for it?

Optimize Your Network To Keep Up With The MacBook Air
Ars Technica's Iljitsch van Beijnum reports:
Nicholas Negroponte once said that in the future, everything going over the air would go over wires, and everything going over wires would go through the air. In the case of the MacBook Air, the latter certainly applies. Even installing Mac OS X and transferring user data afterwards happens without the benefit of an optical drive or FireWire cables - for those of us unwilling to spoil the MacBook Air's svelte lines with ugly USB peripherals, at least.
Apparently, the new way of doing things isn't entirely bug-free yet, but let's assume that Apple will get it right at some point and look instead at the issue clever software won't be able to solve: raw wireless speed....
....while wired Ethernet has little trouble maxing out close to its theoretical speed at 11MB/s, WiFi is usually a lot slower - and even worse - is quite inconsistent.....

The MacBook Air Takes A Long Time To Recharge
HardMac's Lionel reports:
Apple markets the Air MacBook with a small 45W charger. By way of comparison, the MacBook has a 60W charger and the MacBook Pro 85W.
MacFixit reported that it would be a little small for the machine. In the case of intensive use, plugged in, the battery will virtually not recharge at all. A completely discharged battery can take 8 hours to be recharge fully, which is too long.....
