Apple's Revamp of .Mac Will Disrupt Industry

MacObserver's John Martellaro says:

If Steve Jobs revamps .Mac as promised at All Things Digital Last year, Apple could be set for a major disruption in the industry that paints a dire picture for the competition, according to Seeking Alpha on Monday.

"Hundreds of large manufacturers, software companies and publishers ... will soon feel the pressure of Apple's increasing dominance of our digital lives," wrote Colin Pape. From what he's been able to surmise, Apple's seamless integration of key technologies is going to make life suddenly tougher for Web developers, ISPs, graphic designers and others.

The author recapped the groundwork that Apple has been laying with ease of use, iTunes, and the iPhone/iPod touch and suggested that all of the work that Apple has done to date will emerge in a breakthrough that will be tied together with the new .Mac renamed Me.com.....

The author suggested that Apple's new .Mac service could easily place all the competition on the defensive so severely that they might never be able to catch up.

Is Apple Hoarding .Me Domains?

The Apple Core's Jason D. O'Grady says:

Daring Fireball (via Mac Rumors) pointed out that Apple may have secured the domain Me.com in December of 2007, lending credence to the rumor that Apple my re-brand their Mac.com service as "Mobile Me" or some variant thereof.....

Adding fuel to the fire, I tried to pre-register "Mobile.me" and a few other Apple-related ".me" domains (the TLD assigned Montenegro) today and came up short. Attempting to register just about any Apple ".me" domain yield an "X is unavailable and has been removed" error.

.Mac revamp: Follow "me" down Apple's DNS rabbit hole

Ars Technica's Chris Foresman says:

Last week, we reported that certain strings found within the 10.5.3 update and the latest iPhone SDK hinted that a rebranding (and possible revamping) of Apple's .Mac service was in the works. Over the weekend, Daring Fireball's John Gruber noted that both mobileme.com and me.com are parked with MarkMonitor, a DNS management company that "is the only company offering comprehensive, end-to-end solutions that enable an enterprise to both establish and defend their brands against multiple online risks."...

With Steve Jobs's WWDC keynote just one week from today, the recent changes are a reasonably strong indication we could see a revamp of .Mac....

Apple To Get Youngsters Hooked Early On Mobile Computing

venturebeat.com's MG Siegler says:

Every year, Apple does a Back-to-School promotion during the summer time to spur sales of its computers. This year, the word on the street was that it would be the biggest promotion yet. Some details are now coming in about the promotion which is scheduled to kick-off tomorrow - and it's a doozy.

Apple is set to give away a free 8 gigabyte iPod Touch valued at $299 to any student who buys a qualifying Mac, according to MacRumors.

So why is this a big deal?....

Report: Apple Cancels Summer Vacations

Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt says:

It started last spring, with the leak of an AT&T Mobility internal memo asking store staffers not to schedule vacations between mid-June and mid-July - four weeks that neatly bracketed what turned out to be the June 29, 2007 launch of the original iPhone.

The same thing happened again last month; this year, AT&T employees have been asked to stick around for the four weeks starting June 15 and ending July 12 - roughly corresponding to the expected launch date of iPhone 2.0. See here.

So what are we to make of the report from AppleInsider that Apple retail staffers in some regions have been informed that back-to-back vacation days during that period are forbidden, as are multiple weekend absences, from the third week of July to the second week of August?
