Mac's Next Cat? Is It Hello Kitty Or The Lion King?

Mac 360's Ron McElfresh says:

What's in a name? Product marketers will tell you that a product's name must evoke the essence of the product's soul.

Or, something like that. Since 2001, Apple has named each version of Mac OS X after a big cat....

Like, what name will Apple use on the next version of Mac OS X?....

If Apple sticks with a big cat naming convention then what's left? Lion? Somehow the king of the jungle seems far too cartoonish....

To big cat or not to big cat, that is the next OS X question. The only big cat left is Lion, and Lion just sounds too weak after all the other big cats....

140 Million Copies Of Vista Sold. How Does Leopard Compare?

Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt says:

Apple has no numbers to compare with the 140 million copies of Vista that Bill Gates says Microsoft has sold since the latest version of Windows started shipping in late 2006.

Literally, no numbers. The last time Apple released a Leopard sales figure was Oct. 30, 2007, when the company said that it had sold more than 2 million copies of Leopard in one long weekend...

Even so, the two operating systems aren't even playing in the same ballpark when it comes to raw sales.

Microsoft's Windows Vista Spin Merits Second Look

InformationWeek's J. Nicholas Hoover says:

A recent Gartner report shows that businesses are installing Windows Vista at about the same or even a slightly quicker pace than they did with Windows XP. Microsoft is touting those figures as positive spin on Vista uptake. But a deeper look into the numbers shows that the two operating systems aren't exactly competing on a level playing field. XP had Windows 2000 upgrades to contend with, and Vista has no similar competition....

The research shows Windows XP installed base in 2003 at 16.9%, as compared to Windows Vista projections of a 21.3% installed base in 2008. But that's only half the story....

Gates: Vista is doing just fine

News.com's Mike Ricciuti reports:

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates says sales of Windows Vista have been "rapid", with more than 140 million copies sold worldwide.

Gates, speaking in Tokyo, said the figure represented "a very rapid sales rate," according to a Wall Street Journal report on Thursday.

Despite the sales figures, Microsoft has admitted to struggling with the public's perception of Vista. Windows XP, Vista's 7-year-old predecessor, is still popular among both businesses and consumers.

The Mac Night Owl: A Fast Look at the Apple Hardware Upgrade Equation

Way back when, during the nasty 1990s, Apple had so many models, it was doubtful that any single company executive could identify all of them without a cheat sheet at hand. Even salespeople, who earned commissions on the hardware they could move, would have similar difficulties.
