15% of Americans Still Holding Off From This Newfangled Interweb Thing

The Register's Iain Thomson reports that the latest data from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project (http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2013/Non-internet-users.aspx) has found that a sizable percentage of Americans still don't really get this Internet thing, with 15 percent (over 47 million people, according to US census data) never going online and another 9 percent only doing so at work.

Among the holdouts, over a third said that they felt the Internet was "not relevant" to them, 32 percent said using it was either too hard or that they were concerned about the threat of viruses and identity theft. Thompson notes that this latter metric has nearly doubled since Pew's 2010 survey, highlighting that the rising tide of online crime is a significant deterrent effect to use. Prices of computers and the cost of Internet access are also cited as a reason by 19 percent of the holdouts, while 7 percent say the Internet was unavailable to them, either because of their location or due to physical limitations, and surprisingly, 14 percent of Internet refuseniks have tried going online and then abandoned it.

Microsoft Resurfaces With New Tablets

Microsoft expert and tech commentator Karl Volkman of Chicago's SRV Network, Inc., comments that after a reorganization and a significant loss from its Surface RT tablet over the summer, Microsoft went back to the drawing board and introduced its latest tablets at a press event on Monday. The new products, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, are Microsoft's attempt to compete with Apple's iPad, as well as shift its focus away from desktop and laptop computers.

"Microsoft took a hefty loss with the Surface RT tablet earlier this year when they cut the price, so the hope is that the new versions will be greatly improved and give them better positioning in the market," says Volkman. "The new versions boast a better design, a hardware update and improved battery life.

"The Surface Pro 2 is an updated version of the Surface Pro tablet targeting business customers looking for a device that will suit their professional needs. The biggest upgrade for the Surface Pro 2 seems to be the battery, which is said to have a 60 percent better battery life. In addition, the Surface 2 is the second generation of the Surface RT and also has an improved battery life, as well as a new chip that improves speed and performance."

"The second generation of Surface has better hardware, a sleeker design and improved battery life," continues Volkman. "Microsoft appears to be on the right track as they move their business away from the traditional computer and into the tablet and mobile sector. Its a fiercely competitive market, but the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 might have what it takes to move Microsoft in the right direction."

Karl Volkman, the Chief Technology Officer of SRV Network, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois, is an IT Professional with over 30 years of experience. Prior to his position at SRV Network, Karl was the Director of Technology for the New Lenox School District 122 in Illinois, the Chief Information Officer of the Habitat Company in Chicago, and the Manager of Networks & Communications for John Nuveen and Company.
