Five OS X Features You'll Love as a Mac Switcher

AppStorm's Justin Stravarius says:

I have long been thinking of getting a Mac, but since I am not a developer or designer, there wasn't really a compelling reason to do so. But when the AppStorm network called for writers a few weeks ago, I jumped ship and bought a MacBook Pro. And boy – am I loving it or what!

... there are a lot of reasons why I consider this to be my best purchase of the decade.

Justin's five fave Mac features:
• Breezy Installation & Uninstallation
• Preview Files With Quick Look
• Awesome Bundled Software
• Controls
• Stability, Stability and More Stability

Why No Apple Notebook-to-Desktop Docking Stations?

The Apple Blog's Jon Buys says he's one of the lucky few who can carry their MacBook Pro to and from work each day, and use the same machine for everything computer-related, but even so he's not always happy with his current setup, noting that his employer-issued Dell laptop enjoys a major advantage over his MacBook: a docking station, while it takes five to seven separate steps to hook up his Mac laptop to an external keyboard, monitor, and mouse depending on if one is using a Bluetooth keyboard or not. He wonders why there isn't an Apple-branded docking station.

Good question, especially since Apple pioneered the dockable laptop concept with the PowerBook Duo back in the early '90s, then for som reason dropped notebook dockability like the proverbial hot potato around the time of Steve Jobs' return in '97.

Buys notes that the closest thing to a laptop dock Apple offers today is its nosebleed-inducingly expensive Cinema Displays, which came serve as sort-of docking stations with their power, monitor, and USB ports, but they're just too expensive for many of us ordinary folks.

Free Broadband Speed Checker Tool

Check your broadband service's speeds with this free tool from Testinternetspeed.org, a Website that was launched in 2009 to provide PC users with tips and tricks for Windows. Now with a free tool to test Internet connection speed, the website aims to help the PC users worldwide (the Website speed test tool works with Macs too). Just click on the button named "Begin Test" and the tool will commence testing your download speed first, with a cool animation to watch while you wait for the results (about a minute). Once it has finished the test for download speed, it will present the result to you and start carrying out the test for upload speed. Once that test is over, it will present the results to you within the Flash-based tool itself.

image

This internet speed test tool does not ask you to install anything on your computer, and runs from the server itself. It is clean, safe, and fast enough to get you through the test without tedium or boredom setting in. Take the test at:
http://testinternetspeed.org/

Checking broadband connection speed is a useful monitoring exercise along with maintaining clean network settings, cleaning and optimizing system functions and deleting junk files to create space. testinternetspeed.org has teamed up with PC performance specialists, Uniblue, enabling users to benefit from their SpeedUpMyPC software.

Internet connection speeds can vary significantly and testinternetspeed.org's free Internet speed test tool allows users to see if their provider is supplying broadband at publicized connection rates. The tool checks file up and download times and generates a report on the results. From the findings of this test, it can be seen if Internet connection speeds are being supplied as advertised and if not, customers could contact their broadband supplier to look into this in more detail. Checking this is also an important part of system maintenance.

Users of the testinternetspeed.org website can now benefit from a deal in conjunction with system performance specialists, Uniblue. Uniblue are the developers of software utilities that can keep a PC running as if it's new, combating errors, slowdowns and crashes. Uniblue's SpeedUpMyPC has had innumerate expert reviews in the media and has won several awards.

For a limited time, testinternetspeed.org is offering the SpeedUpMyPC software (Windows only) to those who take the speed test for $9.95. The easy-to-use software is normally $29.95 for one year's license including ActiveProtection, which gives customers access to free support and upgrades.

Having taken the speed test, Windows users can follow links on the site to a dedicated download page in order to take advantage of the offer.

University of Cincinnati Scientists Build Cheap "Electrofluidic" E-paper Video Screen

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

Scientists at the University of Cincinnati have come up with what they claim is the acme of mobile display technology: a screen that's cheap, able to present content clearly even in bright sunlight, able to retain an image even when there's no power and yet, unlike e-ink screens, can refresh quickly enough to play video.

And, potentially, to do it in colour.

The researchers - from the Novel Devices Laboratory in the University's School of Electronics and Computing Systems, working with the help of companies Gamma Dynamics, DuPont and Sun Chemical - call the screen an electrofluidic display. It uses two immiscible liquids, a clear oil and a pigment, placed in two connected layers with an aluminium electrode sandwiched in between that's capable of reflecting light.
