Apple Releases MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.7

MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.7 is recommended for MacBook Air (mid 2013) models.

This update addresses an issue which may cause a black screen to appear when installing Windows 7 or Windows 8 using Boot Camp Assistant if both an external optical drive and USB thumb drive are connected to the system. This update also ensures that the system will boot by default into OS X after installation of Windows 8.

File Size:
4.8 MB

System Requirements
OS X 10.8.5

So Where Are The MacBook Pro Retina Updates?

TGAAP's Karl Johnson notes that the first MacBook Pro with Retina Display debuted in June of 2012, and Apple updated their flagship laptop two times in less than 9 months after that - in October 2012 and February 2013. However, since then, Apple has stood pat with the rMBP's specs. for eight months now, even though Intel released new Haswell laptop chips back in the spring. Apple updated the MacBook Air shortly after the Haswell release, and the iMac line was also recently updated, which leaves only the MacBook Pros and Mac mini (and Mac Pro) without Haswell updates.

Johnson suspects that Apple may be holding back a rMBP refresh in order to release it simultaneously with OS X 10.9 Mavericks, probably this month, noting that Apple usually releases hardware at the same time as they release an operating system update, and suggests that an upgraded MacBook Pro with Retina will take advantage of OS 10.9 power saving features in both the new OS 10.9 and Haswell processors, and that if Apple doesn't release OS 10.9 Mavericks at the October 22 keynote, look for a big Mac Keynote in November with multiple hardware updates including the Mac Book Pro Retina.

Is Yahoo the New Gmail?

Yahoo has been going through a series of changes recently with the latest change being a makeover to its free email service. With a completely new look, additional useful features and upgrades to mobile applications, Yahoo’s email is attempting to garner a larger portion of daily email users. Tech expert Karl Volkman of Chicago’s SRV Network, Inc., shares his insights on the tech giant’s email redesign.

"Since Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer worked directly with Google and its popular Gmail service, many of the changes to Yahoo’s email reflect Gmail both aesthetically and functionally," observes Volkman.

One thing users will notice is a change in the organization of email threads, which will place emails in a related topic in a conversation view. “This feature is quite popular with Gmail users. It allows for easy, automatic organization and helps with following a conversation. While users will have the option to turn it off, I believe most Yahoo users will embrace this change,” continues Volkman.

[Editor's note: Not this longtime Yahoo! Mail user, who is distinctly underwhelmed by the new user interface. Ed.]

In addition, Yahoo users can customize backgrounds to spruce up the design of their inboxes and add a personalized experience. To take the personalization even farther, Yahoo’s mobile apps will automatically feature the background that is present when using email on a browser.

However, according to Volkman the most relevant change may be expansive offering of storage space. “Yahoo had previously held the notion that users would not run out of storage space, but never put an actual cap on the amount. Now, Yahoo offers each of its email users a maximum of one terabyte of storage, which is enough to last even the most avid email user multiple lifetimes of email storage,” explains Volkman.

Gartner Says Smart Machines Will Have Widespread and Deeply Disruptive Business Impact Through 2020

Sixty percent of CEOs believe that the emergence of smart machines capable of absorbing millions of middle-class jobs within 15 years is a "futurist fantasy," according to Gartner's 2013 CEO survey. However, Gartner predicts that smart machines will have widespread and deep business impact within only seven years through 2020.

Job destruction will happen at a faster pace, with machine-driven job elimination overwhelming the market's ability to create valuable new ones.

"Most business and thought leaders underestimate the potential of smart machines to take over millions of middle-class jobs in the coming decades," said Kenneth Brant, research director at Gartner. "Job destruction will happen at a faster pace, with machine-driven job elimination overwhelming the market's ability to create valuable new ones."

Gartner analysts discussed the growing impact of smart machines at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, being held here through today.

CIOs must change their mission to address the proliferation of smart machines in a widening range of jobs and consider the impact this trend might have on their career paths and on increasing levels of unemployment, according to Gartner's latest "Maverick" research.

Gartner's Maverick research is designed to spark new, unconventional insights. Maverick research is unconstrained by Gartner's typical broad consensus-formation process to deliver breakthrough, innovative and disruptive ideas from the company's research incubator to help organizations get ahead of the mainstream and take advantage of trends and insights that could impact IT strategy and the wider organization.

Machines are evolving from automating basic tasks to becoming advanced self-learning systems as capable as the human brain in many highly specialized professions. As such, the next wave of job losses will likely occur among highly valued specialists during the next decade.

Gartner research has found that many CEOs are failing to recognize the widespread and deep business impact that smart machines will have through 2020.

"The bottom line is that many CEOs are missing what could quickly develop to be the most significant technology shift of this decade," said Mr. Brant. "In fact, even today, there is already a multifaceted marketplace for engineering a 'digital workforce,' backed by major players on both the supply and demand side. This marketplace comprises intelligent agents, virtual reality assistants, expert systems and embedded software to make traditional machines 'smart' in a very specialized way, plus a new generation of low-cost and easy-to-train robots and purpose-built automated machines that could significantly devalue and/or displace millions of humans in the workforce."

Gartner believes that the capability and reliability of smart machines will dramatically increase through 2020 to the point where they will have a major impact on business and IT functions. The impact will be such that firms that have not begun to develop programs and policies for a "digital workforce" by 2015 will not perform in the top quartile for productivity and operating profit margin improvement in their industry by 2020. As a direct result, the careers of CIOs who do not begin to champion digital workforce initiatives with their peers in the C-suite by 2015 will be cut short by 2023.

A number of forces are colluding to make this threat a reality, not least the fact that the technologies for building a large-scale and diverse scope of smart machines are coalescing and being tested by "first movers." At the same time ongoing weak revenue growth in the global economy will spur demand for cost reduction and productivity improvement by employing smart machines in place of humans.

"It's worth remembering that IT cost is typically about four percent of annual revenue, whereas the labor costs that can be rationalized by smart machines are as high as 40 percent of revenue in some knowledge and service industries," said Mr. Brant. "The supply side of the market including IBM, GE, Google, Microsoft, Apple and Amazon is placing large bets on the success of smart machines, while the demand side includes high-profile first movers that will trigger an 'arms race' for acquiring and/or developing smart machines."

While Gartner maverick research asserts that smart machines will have widespread and deep impact through 2020, we also recognize there are significant impediments in the business, political, economic, social and technology spheres that must be overcome and these include:

• Early pilots will fail to produce desired results
• The technology will not progress rapidly through the end of this decade
• The price of technology will not reduce rapidly through the end of this decade
• Labor unions will reorganize and successfully oppose the intrusion of "job-killing" smart machines
• Citizens will protest higher and more prolonged states of unemployment, electing governments to legislate against smart machines
• Consumers will reject the machines either because of a highly publicized catastrophe or because of a more subtle and prolonged need for human interaction
• People will provide even greater productivity increases than smart machine replacements.

Legal challenges, stemming from the explicit "programmed morality" in automatic smart machines involved in accidents, will derail the market for autonomous agents.
"We certainly will not approach a state of mass unemployment at any time in the near future," said Mr. Brant. "What is also certain, however, is that many new combinations of technology from intelligent software agents, expert systems and virtual reality assistants to software systems embedded in smart products and revolutionary new forms of robotics will emerge and have great impacts in this decade. We won't need to develop a full-functioning artificial brain by 2020 for smart machines to have radically changed our business models, workforce, cost structure and competitiveness."

Safari for Beginners

mac.tutsplus.com's Hannah Richards says:

Using a Mac for the first time can be a daunting proposition, especially for those with no prior computing experience. In this tutorial I will show you how to navigate the Internet using Apples Safari web browser from the perspective of a complete beginner, whether you have limited knowledge, or have never so much as switched on a computer before.

Safari is a web browsing application that is bundled with every Apple computer, tablet, and smartphone. Like Internet Explorer and Firefox, Safari can be thought of as your window to the web, displaying text, images, and video in the form of a website.

Safari's greatest asset is that it can synchronise all of your favourite websites, across every iDevice that you own, using iCloud. The Safari browser itself is fast-loading and, more importantly, secure ensuring that your personal data is safe and sound from unauthorised access at all times.

For the purpose of this tutorial, I am going to visit a website named Google, which is an Internet search engine. You may navigate to another website if you wish.
