New Apple OLED Notebook & iPhone Confirmed By LG - Report
Smarthouse's David Richards reports:
Apple is set to launch new OLED notebooks and flat panel monitors along with a new OLED iPhone claim sources at LG in Korea.
It's also believed that a new iPhone and iPod Touch due later this year will include an OLED screen made by LG who last year scored a multibillion dollar deal to manufacture display screens for Apple.
One source that SmartHouse has spoken to claims that Apple already have working prototype of a new Netbook which will be manufactured in Taiwan with the OLED screen supplied by LG.....

Smarthouse Claims LG Confirms Apple OLED Deal
oled-info.com says:
This is getting interesting. The Smarthouse web site (from Australia) says that a source at LG in Korea confirmed the existance of an OLED notebook and iPhone (and also computer monitors) from Apple....
It's hard to believe that LG will actually release such information about a huge customer such as Apple. We'll have to wait and see...

When 5 Percent Equals 20 Percent - Mac Incursions Complicate LIfe In PC-Centric IT Ecosystems
CNET's Jon Oltsik says:
A lot of companies have torn down the PC Berlin Wall and now allow employees to use Macintosh computers as well as PCs. Apparently, this creates some interesting dynamics for PC support people.
From what I've heard, most organizations settle in at approximately 95 percent PCs, and 5 percent Macs. Seems like a small and manageable percentage, but here's the rub. According to some services vendors and PC administrators I've talked to, a large portion of the Mac users are executives - CEOs, COOs, chief legal counsel, etc. These folks get top priority and can be very demanding.... As a result, some IT professionals claim that 5 percent of Macs may as well be 20 percent of the total PC population. Thus 5 percent equals 20 percent.....

A Hacking Tool Gets Updated For The Mac
IDG News Service's Robert McMillan reports:
Two well-known Mac hackers are updating a widely used hacking toolkit, making it easier to take control of a Macintosh computer.
Over the past few days, the researchers have been quietly adding new software to the Metasploit toolkit, used by security researchers and criminals alike. Metasploit already supported Mac attacks, but until recently the Mac code hadn't been as good as Metasploit's Windows and Linux tools, said Dino Dai Zovi, an independent security researcher who talked about the new tools with his collaborator Charlie Miller at the CanSecWest conference. "Our goal was to make Mac OS X a first-class target for Metasploit.".....

Pwn2Own 2009: Safari/MacBook Falls In Seconds
ZNet's Ryan Naraine reports:
Charlie Miller has done it again. For the second consecutive year, the security researcher hacked into a fully patched MacBook computer by exploiting a security vulnerability in Apple's Safari browser.
"It took a couple of seconds. They clicked on the link and I took control of the machine," Miller said moments after his accomplishment.

Empty Your Email Inbox
A Macworld editor's note says This Joe Kissell article won the award for Best How-To Article at American Business Media's 2008 Neal Awards, announced Thursday. Kissel says:
As I write this sentence, my e-mail application's inbox is empty. In fact, it's almost always empty at the end of the day. This seemingly amazing feat didn't require a great deal of technological sophistication, organizational wizardry, or monklike discipline. I simply decided an empty inbox was necessary to preserve my sanity, and through trial and error - along with some helpful hints from productivity experts like Merlin Mann and David Allen - I eventually settled on a simple system that makes it possible.
Maintaining an empty (or nearly empty) inbox can make you more productive, result in fewer lost messages, and reduce stress by letting you focus on your most important e-mail......

Improve Sluggish PDF Handling in Preview
Macworld's Rob Griffiths says:
Have you ever run into a PDF that, when viewed in Preview and/or Adobe, is just incredibly sluggish in its responses? A simple task, such as clicking on a page's thumbnail to jump to that page, seems to take seconds, and zooming in and out is painfully slow. I see this occasionally, most often in PDFs that are loaded with images--though other image-heavy PDFs work just fine, so this isn't a universal issue.....
Although that PDF weighs in at only 2MB, trying to navigate through it--in case you'd like to brush up on your fallout survival tactics--is a painful experience, whether you're using Preview or Reader. If you run into troublesome PDFs such as this one, here are a couple tricks to try to make them more usable.....

The Best Way To Back Up Your Mac With Hard Drives
Mac 360's Bambi Brannan says:
Last night I noticed a new blue light peaking out from the top of my husband's MacPro..... This one came from a little pancake hard drive box with umpteen extra USB and FireWire ports. "Yet another Mac backup scheme for the geeky," I thought. I was right. How many ways can Mac users find to back up Macs?....
....Time Machine, when it's working well, is pretty much set it and forget it..... That's fine for finding lost files but not so fine when your Mac's hard drive finally falls victim to the Mean Time Between Failure number assigned by the maker.... there is another way. ....
Time Machine takes awhile to get your Mac up and running again.....So, get yet another external hard drive and clone your Mac's hard drive with either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. Why?.....

DigitalArts review: Apple's 8-core Mac Pro with Nehalem processors
DigitalArts says:
Apple's new Mac Pro represents a bit of a coup for the company. Apple got to announce a workstation based on Intel's Xeon 3500 and 5500 chip lines before the processors were even launched. They're formally announced towards the end of this month and this is when we expect other workstation vendors to debut their models based on the chips.
The 3500 and 5500 series are the first Xeons based on Intel's 'Nehalem' architecture, which also underpins Intel's Core i7 platform. It provides a 'sit-up-and-take-notice' boost in power compared to the previous generation of Mac Pros - and with future software releases it should become even faster.....

Core Image Graphics on Nehalem Mac Pro (vs others)
Barefeats' rob-ART morgan reports:
I can almost hear some of you snort in contempt when I publish 3D Games as a measure of the Nehalem's "manhood." I make no apologies because, whether you play 3D accelerated games or not, the state-of-the-art gaming environment stresses all subsystems of the Mac Pro. So it could be argued that games measure total system performance.
Having said that, I'm throwing you serious users a bone. I, too, want to know how the Nehalem Mac Pros with their two graphics card options handle the Core Image effects processing....

Dell's Adamo looks like a MacBook, but isn't a MacBook
"I'm convinced the Adamo will never become an Apple-like cultural icon" says The Industry Standard's Paul Boutin:
it's slim, sleek, and sexy. dell's new adamo notebook is thinner by one-tenth of an inch than the fat end of a macbook air. it's a bit pricier, but unlike the macbook you can get mobile broadband built in. it's definitely one of the sharpest-looking laptops ever.
too bad it runs vista..... it'll always be "the windows machine that's sort of like a macbook."....

PC Mag: Hands On: Google Voice's Voicemail Transcription
Recently Google took GrandCentral, spiffed up the software and rebadged it as Google Voice. Among the new offerings is the ability to transcribe voicemail messages! That's right--your messages are converted to text and emailed and/or text messaged to you. Since the PC came on the scene accurate automated voice transcription has been its missing link. Can Google do any better? I decided to give it a shot.
