Opera 10.5 Leaps To Beta, Holds On To Unexpected Performance Lead

BetaNew's Scott M. Fulton, III reports that Opera, perhaps breaching etiquette altogether and going for the sinister "Triple Dog Dare," skipped right over version 10,5 Alpha 1 - which we were all expecting - and officially dubbed the latest build of Opera 10.5 "Beta 1 (Windows-only at this point, alas, but see below)." In so doing, Opera also removed what it had been calling "10.2 Alpha 1" off of its list of test builds, and replaced it with 10.5 Beta 1 on its "browser/next" page.

Fulton says Opera is now officially back in the hunt for Web browser performance supremacy, warts and all, but the lead is much narrower than it was last week, by almost 44%, and with the wind in Chrome 5's sails now, Opera has to paddle as fast as it can to maintain its distance from what has become the fastest evolving browser chassis in history.

Never Fear; Mac Version Of Opera 10.5 beta Coming

The Opera Team's Adam Minchinton says:

Don't worry Mac and UNIX fans; we haven't forgotten about you with all the Windows work going on. We too have been working hard improving your favourite platform. So much so that these platforms are now well into their Alpha stages, and we are working hard to get to Beta as soon as possible.

Google Extends Chrome For Fanbois

Meanwhile, The Register's Cade Metz reports that Google has released a new beta of its Mac-ified Chrome browser that accepts extensions and provides bookmarking syncing across disparate devices.

The Mountain View Chocolate Factory first released a beta Mac version of Chrome in December, but unlike the Linux and Windows incarnations, it didn't offer support for extensions or bookmark syncing until today.

Opera Beta Burns Chrome For Top Spot

The Register's Andrew Orlowski reports:

Opera unleashed a beta version of its browser this morning, and 10.5 claims the lead over Google Chrome and Apple's Safari in the Javascript stakes. The speed improvement is down to a new Carakan ECMAScript engine.

The Rolls Royce of browsers has long been the innovation lab for the rest of the industry, with rivals touting features first seen on Opera as their own "inventions" years later.....

A pre-Alpha circulated before Xmas. Some sites testing this gave Opera almost a half second advantage of the current leader, Google's Chrome....

It's around 2.5 times faster than Opera 10.2, or seven times faster than the current 10.1 release.....

Experts Say The iPad's Set For Big, Big Business In The Enterprise...

9To5Mac's Jonny Evans reports:

Just a short note to point out that Apple's iPad seems set for a future in the enterprise, judging at least from the frenetic level of Tweeting activity greeting a report dating from last week as published by CIO.

That report features a chat with Computer Industry Hall of Fame inductee, Rosenthal, Chairman and CEO of Enterprise Mobile, and he thinks the iPad is going to be a "game changer" for business users - and he thinks the device is going to impact on business in a big way, fast.

Microsoft hints at Office for iPad

T3's Chris Smith says:

Could this be the iPad's "killer app"?

The Seattle-based company let slip the possibility of a suite for the new tablet during a demonstration of the brand new Office for Mac 2011, which is scheduled for release in late 2010.

Three iPad Questions For Steve Jobs

Forbes' Lee Gomes says:

The iPad has fewer capabilities than a netbook, in a similar size. Not a good start.

People about to buy a computer tend to fixate on speeds and feeds--megahertz, megabytes, megapixels. After watching Steve Jobs talk about his iPad.... I had the notion that a better way to approach a new gadget is to ask three questions: How much do you have to think about the decision to carry it with you? How long does it take to turn on? How do you tell it what you want it to do?

Remember these, and you have the only computer advice you will ever need. I can use them to explain my initial, somewhat lukewarm, reaction to the iPad.

USB 3.0 Tested: How Fast Is It in the Real World?

PC Mag's Michael J. Miller says:

I've written a lot about USB 3.0, and finally I've been able to test an external USB hard drive in the real world. As I expected, I did see a big improvement in performance, but not nearly the performance numbers I saw in the demos at the Consumer Electronics Show.

That is partly because the speed of the USB connection is only one of many factors that impact real-world hard-drive performance.

Why Apple Won't Let The Mac And iPhone Succeed In Business

InfoWorld's Galen Gruman says:

Last summer, it looked like Apple was finally going to make its Macs and iPhones enterprise-capable, giving hope to those who wanted a more stable, less failure-prone option at the office. Soon, it appeared, Macs and iPhones would no longer need to come in through the back door, or be relegated to "special" departments such as software development or marketing.
Don't count on it...
