One in 15 Households With Macs Infected With Flashback

Kindsight Security Labs' Kevin McNamee reports that Kindsight has confirmed previous findings by Russian anti-virus vendor Dr. Web and Kaspersky Labs estimates that 6.9% of North American households with a Mac computer have been infected with tht Flashback Trojan horse malware, and that an analysis of network infection statistics from North America showed that 0.75% of home networks were infected with the Flashback malware. McNamee says that passive OS fingerprinting of the network traffic that generated the alerts confirmed that 99% of these infections were from home networks with at least one computer running Mac OS X, and based on a 10.92% OS X market share in North America as reported by IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, January 11, 2012, allows Kindsight to estimate that about 6.9% of the home networks with at least one Mac are infected, with the infection rate for Flashback more than half of infection rate Kindsight sees for all Windows malware, demonstratin how vulnerable Mac computers can be when cybercriminals decide to target them.

How LibreOffice Writer Tops MS Word: 12 Features

Datamation's Bruce Byfield says that when reviewers look at LibreOffice and its ancestor OpenOffice.org, they inevitably assume that it's inferior to Microsoft Office, although undemanding users may find it acceptable.

However, Byfield contends that when you examine LibreOffice and MS Office without assumptions, the comparison changes dramatically - especially true when looking at the respective word processors, LibreOffice's Writer and MS Office's Word, and that far from being the underdog in every circumstance, Writer has at least twelve major advantages over Word, and that together, these advantages not only suggest a very different design philosophy from Word, but also demonstrate that, from the perspective of an expert user, Writer is the superior tool.

Twelve categories where Byfield thinks Libre Office has the edge are:
1) The Navigator
2) The Styles and Formatting Window
3) Page Styles
4) Separate List Styles
5) Frame Styles
6) Hierarchical Paragraph Styles
7) WYSISYG Headers and Footers
8) Custom Properties
9) Paragraph by Paragraph Hyphenation
10) Improved Table of Contents Options
11) Advanced PDF Options
12) Stability, Long Documents, and Recovery

He says these twelve features are not cherry-picked, but rather, a result of going through the menus item by item, ignoring cosmetic differences and concentrating on the major functional ones.

'Heavily Redesigned' Mac Laptops Coming With Ivy Bridge, New Thunderbolt

International Business Times's Dave Smith observes that it's been quite some time since Apple overhauled its MacBook Pro laptops, but several sources close to Apple are currently telling customers to hold off on buying a Mac, as Apple is expected to roll out "heavily redesigned" laptops in the coming months powered by Intel's latest Ivy Bridge chip, as well as featuring second-generation Thunderbolt I/O connectivity, a lighter and thinner frame, better battery life, and possibly even a full surface trackpad.

Smith cites Wall Street Journal columnist and veteran Aooke watcher Walt Mossberg advising: "If you're thinking of buying a new laptop this spring, my advice is to think again. "Apple is overdue for redesigned laptops, especially in its MacBook Pro line, and it is a good bet that new, possibly heavily redesigned, models will begin appearing later this year. Current Macs will likely be upgradable to Mountain Lion, but if you buy now, you'll miss out on the likely new hardware." '

Mr. Mossberg is quoted noting that Ivy Bridge CPUs are claimed to offer much faster graphics performance without sacrificing battery life," and that "While some Ivy Bridge laptops will be available very soon, the new chips won't show up in large numbers of consumer laptops until around June. So, even before Windows 8 appears, many consumer laptops you buy now will be outclassed by similar machines that will be introduced this summer."

Smith also reports that Ivy Bridge silicon will not only boost graphics power and multimedia processing by some 65 percent over the last generation Intel chips, is also the first CPU developed by Intel to employ 3D transistors, and the first to natively support USB 3.0, and that sources from Apple's Asian supply chains claim the new MacBook Pro laptops will feature a Retina Display resolution of 2800 x 1800 pixels compared with current MacBook display resolutions ranging from 1680 x 1050 to 1280 x 800.
