Apple Faces Lawsuit For Retina MacBook Pro 'Ghosting' Issue

Slashdot contributor Soulskill cites redletterdave writing:

"Apple is facing a potential class action suit in San Francisco's California Northern District Court after an owner of its MacBook Pro with Retina display accused the computer company on Wednesday of 'tricking' consumers into paying for a poor-quality screen, citing an increasingly common problem that causes images to be burned into the display, also known as 'image persistence' or 'ghosting.' The lawsuit claims only LG-made screens are affected by this problem, but 'none of Apple's advertisements or representations disclose that it produces display screens that exhibit different levels of performance and quality.' Even though only one man filed the lawsuit, it can become a class action suit if others decide to join him in his claim, which might not be an issue: An Apple.com support thread for this particular problem, entitled 'MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in,' (http://goo.gl/m46H2) currently has more than 7,200 replies and 367,000 views across more than 500 pages."

MacBook Pro with Retina Display Problems: Apple Faces Class Action Suit For Ghosting Issue

International Business Times' Dave Smith reports that Apple is facing a potential class action suit in San Francisco's California Northern District Court after an owner of its MacBook Pro with Retina display accused the computer company on Wednesday of tricking consumers into paying for a poor-quality screen, citing an increasingly common problem that causes images to be burned into the display, also known as ghosting . Smith notes that Retina display panels used on the 2012 MacBook Pro were provided by two different suppliers - LG and Samsung - but only the LG-made Retina displays have manifested this ghosting malfunction.

OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Apple's Last Serious Operating System For Creative Professionals?

CNET's Josh Lowensohn reports that a media production pro who preferred not to be named since he's part of Apple's beta testing program for new and upcoming versions of its operating systems commented:

"For creative professionals,10.6.8 was the last true powerful operating system from Apple," adding that "[OS X] 10.7 and 10.8 are like Microsoft's Windows Vista -- bloated, buggy blingware. They are focused so heavily on the consumer that they made the machines terribly inefficient for those using them eight to 10 hours a day."

Alas, the anonymous commentator may have a salient point. The current version of OS X is 10.8.3, with release of OS X 10.9 expected sometime in the next few months and rumored to incorporate even more dumbed-down user interface cahracteristics crossed over from Apple's iOS mobile operating system.

Address 'Update Failed' When Installing OS X 10.8.3

MacFixIt's Topher Kessler says if you cannot install the latest OS X update after experiencing errors with its initial installation, there are several steps you can take.

Kessler norts that while the OS X 10.8.3 update for Mountain Lion users install has gone smoothly for most people, the most prominent issue so far is a small number of users where the update appears to install but then gives a message that simply states "Update Failed" with an option to restart the system. Upon doing so, the system reports it is still running OS X 10.8.2; however, subsequent attempts to update result in the App Store crashing.

[Your Editor experienced a variant of this glitch, with my first attempt at a (mandatory) restart after the App Store app's prompt still yielding OS 10.3.2. After a re-scan by the App Store program, Software Update indicated that the update still needed downloading. I clicked the button, but this time the progress bar advanced from start to finish in about 30 seconds, followed by reappearance of the restart prompt. The second restart attempt proved the charm, and after the upgraded system sorted itself out for about 10 minutes behind a grey screen with the Apple logo, the login screen popped up and the boot-up completed nicely. - Ed.]

Topher Kessler has some other suggestions if you run into 10.8.3 install glitches.
