The iPod Classic's Final Act
Macworld's Peter Cohen says:
The end of the road is in sight for the venerable iPod classic. Meriting barely a passing mention during Apple's "Let's Rock" press event on Tuesday, the device is now available in only a single 120GB model for $249. Oh, how the mighty have fallen....

New Headphone, Mic Options For Late 2008 iPods
Appleinsider's Prince McLean reports:
Along with the new iPods, Apple has released a new audio feature: recording. The newly released 4G Nano, 2G iPod touch, and revised iPod Classic 120GB all feature audio input. A new high quality, dual driver headphone set is being offered as well.
Unlike the iPhone, previous iPods lacked audio input on their headphone jack. The iPhone uses four conductors on its headphone jack: ground, stereo right, stereo left, and mic. This allows the iPhone to work with its headphones sporting an integrated mic (which doubles as a signal for track skipping).

Apple unveils new iPods, Wall Street yawns
Fortune's Scott Moritz reports:
Apple, the consumer electronics giant, on Tuesday rolled out new versions of its popular iPod music player, but failed to deliver the surprises that finicky investors have come to expect.
The new iPod line announced by CEO Steve Jobs at a press event in San Francisco, which Apple dubbed "Let's Rock." Among other things, Jobs cut the price on the year-old iPod Touch and unveiled a new Nano video player.
Shares, which were flat throughout the presentation, fell 3% at the end of Jobs speech as investors signaled their disappointment that more sweeping changes in products and pricing weren't in the works.

New Nano vs. New Zune: Fight!
CrunchGear's Devin Coldewey says:
Microsoft's preemptive strike against Apple yesterday may not have the star power of the Stevenote (Jack Johnson?), but it did make the Zune even more competitive. As of this moment, the li'l Zune and iPod Nano have the same capacities and same pricing. So unless you're already committed to buying one or the other, you may want to look at their capabilities before dropping those bills. Chart to follow.
Examine this handy chart, then read below before flaming, you Appleheads.

Where do new iPods leave Zune?
CNET's Ina Fried says:
With Apple's iPod announcements largely out there, I thought it made sense to see how Microsoft's new Zune lineup stacks up.
The good news for Microsoft is that its Zunes are priced right in line with Apple's new iPod Nano and iPod Classic line. From either company, a 120GB hard drive player fetches $249, a 16GB flash model sells for $199, and an 8GB flash model will sell for $149.
The bad news is that once again, Apple has made life harder for Microsoft--adding features like voice recording and "shake to shuffle" to the Nano. Apple's "Genius" feature, while not as expansive as the Channels feature of the Zune, also gets Apple in on the auto-recommendation game.

Who Gives A Toss About The Microsoft Zune?
ITWire's Davey Winder says:
How do new 80GB and 120GB hard-drive based models grab you?
OK, try 4GB to 16GB Flash Zunes then?
Dammit, you must be impressed by the ability to buy songs online using a WiFi connection?
Last chance saloon now, you will be able to tag songs identified on the built-in FM radio. There, that must have impressed you?
I am guessing, to be honest, it did not. The harsh truth is that, today of all days, nobody really gives a toss about the Zune....

Will the iPod Touch ever have software to make it a PDA?
Will there be applications available that will allow it to sync with the computer for contacts, calender and email? (I don’t need a phone, or the extra $80+ per month to use it.)
There were rumors that Apple would be coming out with a PDA. (My Axim X50v died. It seems the only PDA available is the iPaq 211.)
Games would be fun for the grand kids, but I’m lost without a PDA. Have you heard anything about a PDA from Apple?
Many thanks.
