iPod touch is more than an iPhone without a phone, says iSuppli

DIGITIMES Eric Mah reports:

On the outside, Apple's iPod touch looks a lot like its iPhone. On the inside, there's a strong resemblance too, but a dissection conducted by iSuppli's Teardown Analysis service reveals the touch sports a distinct design and unique advancements compared to the iPhone....

iSuppli's estimate of the iPod touch's costs is strictly limited to expenses for components and other materials and manufacturing. The estimate does not include costs for software, intellectual property, accessories and packaging. The BOM figure also does not include research and development costs, because such data cannot be derived from a teardown and component analysis.

Functionally, the Apple iPod touch is an iPhone minus several features, including cell-phone capability, Bluetooth and certain software elements. Otherwise, the core features of the iPhone user experience are all present in the iPod touch, including orientation sensing, web surfing via Wi-Fi and the product's signature feature: a 3.5-inch diagonal touch screen with multi-touch sensing....

However, the iPod touch's design differs from the iPhone in that it is uniquely optimized to meet its form-factor and cost requirements.

To cut space usage, the iPod touch makes use of some advanced packaging for its components not seen in the iPhone, including 0201 diodes and passive components in 01005 enclosures on the touch's WLAN module.....

Inside iPod Touch

BusinessWeek's Arik Hesseldahl says:

At first glance, Apple's iPod Touch looks almost exactly like its sibling the iPhone. It sports the same distinctive touch screen, plays movies and music in much the same way, and can also use wireless Internet connections for surfing the Web. All it really lacks is the ability to call another person.

But according to a teardown analysis conducted by market-research firm iSuppli, the Touch isn't just a stripped-down iPhone, but rather it has some unique design traits of its own.

iPod Nano Review

Macworld's Dan Frakes reports:

It used to be that buying an iPod nano instead of a full-size iPod meant more than giving up storage capacity to get a smaller player; you also sacrificed features, such as video playback and output, better games, and audio recording. Apple added recording abilities to the second-generation nano, but with the latest version introduced on 5 September, the company went whole hog, bringing every major full-size feature to the smaller, flash-based nano.

iPod Repair Follow-up

MaximumPC's Michael Brown says:

As I mentioned in a previous blog post, Blue Raven is now offering a one-price/fix-anything iPod repair kit. You buy a $129 empty box at your favorite retailer, drop your broken iPod into the box, and ship it to Blue Raven (UPS shipping in both directions is included in the price). They'll fix whatever's ailing your iPod and send it back within three business days....

...I shipped the player out Monday and it came back to me on Thursday ....

One thing I hadn't thought to do, however, was back up the contents of my iPod, which came back to me wiped clean.....

Aside from that, I have absolutely no complaints about Blue Raven's service....
