Microsoft: Apple Not Interested in Silverlight, Flash for iPhone

WebMonkey's Scott Loganbill reports:

According to Microsoft's latest Silverlight announcement, Apple shows little to no interest in installing either Silverlight or Adobe Flash on its iPhones.

Thanks to the open source nature of Google's mobile operating system Android, on the other hand, Silverlight on a Google-enabled phone is a prospective possibility for Microsoft - one they'd be eager to jump on.

"Basically where we're at right now is we have talked with Apple," Microsoft Vice President Scott Guthrie admitted. "We are very interested in being able to run [Silverlight] on the iPhone. At the end of the day, Apple ultimately controls what software runs on the iPhone. To date, what they've said is that at this time, they're not looking to enable browser plug-ins like Silverlight or Flash to run on top of it."

OLO's iPhone-powered Laptop

TUAW's Steven Sande says:

....here's something to look at: a laptop computer powered by an iPhone.

OLO Computer is showing a concept computer that uses an iPhone as the CPU and touchpad..... the computer is basically a dock for the iPhone. Before you start laughing too hard, think about this: many netbooks have less storage than the iPhone.....

The iPhone fits into a rectangular space on the OLO, becoming the touchpad for the laptop.....

iPhones Go To Front Of The Class At Texas University

Network World's John Cox reports:

When almost 1,000 freshman students showed up at Abilene Christian University on Aug. 16, they got something more than the usual medical release forms, parking permits and Welcome Week T-shirts.

They got a choice of a brand-spanking-new Apple iPhone 3G or iPod Touch, plus a package of ACU-written Web applications to use on them.

The hardware is part of the Texas university's pilot mobile learning project, which has been gestating for over a year. About 650 first-year students chose the iPhone, and about 300 the iPod Touch....ACU pays for the hardware; each student (or his parents) select and pay for the monthly AT&T service plan.
