Apple's P.A. Semi Deal Won't Change Plans for iPhone Yet - Gartner

Gartner Group's Martin Reynolds says:

Apple will gain a 64-bit PowerPC core and system-on-chip architecture in its deal for P.A. Semi. But its plans for the technology remain unclear, as Apple is likely to stick with Intel's x86 architecture for several years....

Apple will become a merchant semiconductor supplier because of this deal. How long that will last is an open question. However, the question of Apple's long-term strategy is more important. P.A. Semi's products are unsuited to Apple's current market needs, because they are not optimized for Internet applications. Apple will need to rearchitect these products by rebalancing the I/O and adding a graphics controller, creating low-cost, low-power chips that enable new features and price points for wireless devices....

Gartner expects Apple to stick with the x86 architecture for its mainstream notebook and desktop products in the near future. It is possible that Apple will move its iPhone to Intel's Atom processor first, and then move it to an Apple processor with a PowerPC core.

Paper: 3G iPhone to be smaller, lighter

Electronista reports:

The next generation of Apple's phone should include a significantly smaller phone that may replace the existing model, according to claims by Taiwan Economic News. The paper echoes recent rumors in claiming that the device will use a plastic backing in place of aluminum but also contends that the device will be significantly smaller than the original, with a 2.8-inch screen replacing the 3.5-inch model used today. The combination of a lighter material and smaller frame is said to reduce the weight to between 3.9 and 4.2 ounces from the initial model's 4.8.

Rumour-mill rumbles on Apple, Immersion vibro iPhone pact claim

Llittle-known Mac news site Palluxo.com has claimed an unnamed Apple source told it that senior executives from Immersion and Apple met last week to discuss "licensing and implementation issues of iPhone haptics".

Hon Hai Reported to Make New-Version iPhones for Apple

CENS's Ken Liu reports:

Foreign institutional investors believed Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. had won orders to make 25 million units of Apple`s latest iPhone and would begin to ship the phones in June this year.

The newest version is the third generation of this phone, weighing only 110 to 120 grams vs. first generation cousin`s 158 grams and running on 3G mobile technology. Adopting plastic casing instead of aluminum-magnesium casing largely brings down the gear`s weight and cost by nearly one third. In addition to weight advantage, the latest version is also more energy efficient and externally smarter. LCD screen on the phone measures 2.8 inches diagonally, a downsize from first generation`s 3.5 inches.

Battle of the Brands: iPhone vs. BlackBerry

BloggingStocks' Brian White says:

Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry wireless email device has been a staple of the corporate world for years now. RIM, a Canadian company, took the function everyone wanted -- easy and superb access to mobile email -- and turned that single function into an entire industry. Of course, RIM's wireless units now handle voice calls, pictures, document editing and more, but that's not what customers buy BlackBerries for. The single function of secure, instant and mobile email is still the killer application for the BlackBerry.

Enter Apple Inc. and its uber-popular iPhone that's been on sale for coming up on a year now. The company has sold way over 4 million of the devices since then and has taken a large swipe at the "smartphone" wireless handset category where the iPhone competes. Reminder: the unit has not even been on the market for a year. Apple has selectively released upgrades to the iPhone to make it more competitive in the business customer arena, and with the possibility of the iPhone being able to handle corporate push email, it may become an even bigger threat to RIM in the very near future.

Apple iPhone for Latin America - June?

9to5Mac's Andy Space says:

Apple's purported plans for Asia and Europe have been widely reported, now new evidence suggests the company has a plan to launch the device across Latin America - offering its device through multiple carriers.

It's just the latest in a growing body of evidence that proves Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer really was not joking when he said the company is "not wedded to any particular way to go to market."

Apple: 200,000 iPhone Developers So Far

Macworld's Peter Cohen reports:

Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer revealed that the company has signed up 200,000 developers for its iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) release thus far.
