The iPhone Makes Gains with Businesses
WSJ.com says:
Apple in July released a software update for its iPhone that was intended to help get the popular device into businesses. A month and a half later, the plan seems to be working, according to two new surveys.
ChangeWave Research surveyed close to 2,000 technology pros and found that 17% planned to buy iPhones this quarter. That's up from 13% in May. Also, 19% of tech pros said that the July software update made them more likely to buy iPhones for their businesses. The same survey found that those planning to buy Research In Motion's BlackBerry dropped three percentage points from May to 79%. Obviously, the BlackBerry is still far and away the leader, but Apple is starting to make a dent.

My iPhone Goes On Vacation
MacObserver's Ted Landau says:
I work at home. I have no daily commute (unless you count the stroll along the hallway from my bedroom to my office). Maybe I'm a stick-in-the-mud, or maybe it's just that I am fortunate to live in one of the best locations in the country (the San Francisco Bay area), but I rarely travel far from home.
As a result, while I use my iPhone every day, I don't usually get to test what it is like to depend on it for an extended time, without access to the technological "comforts" of home.
I got that chance earlier this month when I went on a two-week trip that took me to North Carolina and Michigan (which is also the reason for the recent interlude in my blog postings). I brought my MacBook Pro along as well. But, as a test of the power of the iPhone, I kept my use of the laptop to an absolute minimum, depending exclusively on the iPhone as much as possible.

Apple may be working with AT&T on iPhone tethering plan
Appleinsider's Sam Oliver reports:
Apple is discussing with U.S. wireless carrier AT&T the possibility of offering iPhone 3G users the option to purchase an additional data plan that would allow the handset's 3G connection to be shared with notebook computers.
A $10 application called NetShare from iPhone software developer NullRiver briefly enabled this functionality earlier this month but was subsequently plucked from the App Store by Apple after AT&T expressed its disapproval....

iPhone Data Plan Promotion Extended In Canada
CNet's Marguerite Reardon reports:
Canadian cell phone carrier Rogers Communications is extending its iPhone data plan promotion another month, as it tries to figure out how best to price data plans for smartphone users, CBC reported Thursday.
Rogers, Canada's exclusive iPhone carrier, will offer the 6-gigabyte data service for $30 a month for all smartphone users, including Apple iPhone users, and laptop air cards....

iPhone 3G Finally Reaching Supply And Demand Balance
Appleinsider's Aidan Malley reports:
After more than six weeks of almost constant iPhone 3G shortages, Apple is finally known to be getting a grip on its retail supply and has virtually every model in stock everywhere.
Research by analyst Ben Reitzes of Lehman Brothers reveals that, as of Tuesday evening, all US Apple retail stores had 16GB iPhones in either color ready to sell for the following morning -- a feat which Apple hasn't managed since Lehman first began canvassing the stores just days after the July 11th launch....

iPhone Issues Caused By Power Chip?
CNET News.com's Tom Krazit reports:
Another plausible scenario for the iPhone 3G reception problems primarily experienced in the US has emerged: it's related to faulty power-control software.
RoughlyDrafted reported Thursday in the US that a source within AT&T blamed "faulty" power-control software inside the iPhone 3G for the dropped calls and poor reception that owners have been experiencing since the device was released in July. Widespread problems have not been reported in Australia.
In short, the iPhone 3G demands too much power, more than is necessary, from a local cell tower to maintain a connection, and when multiple iPhones try to connect to the same tower, the problem snowballs....

Create Your Very Own Pre-Keynote Faux-Pod
MacLife's Florence Ion says:
It's no secret that Apple struggles to keep new product and software releases under wraps, often going to great lengths to ensure that employees don't leave the building without signing a binding contract that forbids them from even uttering a word about a project they're working on. Despite rumors circulating various tech sites and fastidious bloggers posting overly Photoshopped pictures of what they claim to be a brand spanking new Apple product, the company has always managed to keep its blueprints under wraps and away from the media (at least until it's time for a keynote)....
It's safe to say that anyone can come up with his or her very own Apple rumor. That's why we've comprised "How-to Create Your Very Own Pre-Keynote Faux-Pod." And if you succeed in this attempt, maybe you'll even become an internet celebrity!
