Use Your FileMaker Pro Databases on Your iPhone
Low End Mac's Adam Rosen says:
I recently joined the ranks of the iPhone enabled and am having a generally marvelous time with my new iToy. One of the best features is how seamlessly the iPhone works with my Mac's Address Book and Calendar data, directly via Apple's Sync Services. No third party data conduit is needed - unlike Treo or BlackBerry handhelds, a frequent source of headaches for many of my clients.
However, on my Mac I use Apple's Address Book only for email addresses and instead keep my personal and business addresses in FileMaker Pro. I've used FileMaker for many years and have a set of linked databases that manage my business contacts and invoices. I need a way to get this contact info on my iPhone.
Unfortunately there's no iPhone app from FileMaker to address this need. An older product, FileMaker Mobile, has been discontinued, and the company has made no announcement as to whether they intend to support the platform or not. FileMaker only suggests using the program's web publishing feature and accessing your data via the iPhone Safari web browser. This can be useful in some instances, but it requires effort to create and host the database - and it's not the same as having a local copy of your data on your iPhone
Fortunately an enterprising third party has stepped up to fill the void: FMTouch is a $70 iPhone app available from the iTunes App Store. With this application on your iPhone, a bit of data massaging on your computer, and some trial and error, you can now have full working FileMaker databases right on your handheld.....

Apple manufactures 10M iPhones
The Apple Core's Jason D. O'Grady reports:
About a month ago creative individuals determined that Apple has sold 8 million iPhones based on collected International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers. A joint project of AFB and Investor Village's AAPL Sanity board have been collecting iPhone IMEI numbers and recording them on a big Google speadsheet. Based on the collected IMEI's, Apple was on a pace to build its 10 millionth iPhone before the end of September.

Eight Ways To Track Your Portfolio On The iPhone
The Apple Core's Jason D. O'Grady says:
In case you haven't been paying attention, U.S. financial markets are in a tailspin (Dow and AAPL both down 4 6+% today). Securities continue on their relentless roller coaster ride that could make veteran stock brokers lose their lunch.
If you'd like to stay more in touch with your financial portfolio there are a number of iPhone applications that can help you.

Apple hits 10 million iPhone goal early - its stock fails to notice
Venturebeat's MG Siegler reports:
You know the stock market's bad when Apple has a flurry of good iPhone news and its stock is still down over 8 percent in trading. That's the situation today.
The good news is that Apple has apparently already sold over 10 million iPhones this year. It has stated numerous times that 10 million was the goal for all of 2008, and it appears to have hit that goal a full three months early, if some numbers gathered by the blog Bullish Cross are correct - and they seem to be.

iPhone Sales Drastically Surpass Q4 Consensus; Apple Reaches 10m Goal
Seeking Alpha's Andy Zaky and Turley Muller say:
Based on the tremendous joint efforts by members at Mac Observer's AFB and Investor Village's AAPL Sanity Board member howlongtoretire (aka HLTR) to track IMEI iPhone numbers, we have determined that Apple has drastically surpassed analysts' Q4 iPhone sales estimates, and that Apple has reached its goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008. The consensus estimates for iPhone sales figures for Apple's Q4 (calendar Q3) were calling for approximately 4 million units. It now appears that Apple has sold at least 7 to 7.5 million iPhones in Q4that's nearly 80% above consensus. Apple has far surpassed even Gene Munster's bullish estimates of 5 million iPhone sales in Q4 according to the data.

Apple courts businesses with iPhone
Bloomberg News's Connie Guglielmo reports:
Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple gets at least 80 percent of sales from consumers and half its revenue from the U.S., putting the computer maker at risk if people cut spending amid economic turmoil, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. said.
The iPhone's success depends in part on Apple's ability to win over corporate buyers, Jobs said at the unveiling of the faster 3G model in June. Apple added business features that mimic some functions in Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry, which controls more than half the market for e-mail phones in the U.S.

iPhone grabs top smart phone spot - Apple grows market share 55% since iPhone 3G launch
Computerworld's Gregg Keizer reports:
Apple Inc. boosted its share of the U.S. consumer smart phone market by 55% after cutting the price of its iPhone and rolling out a 3G model this summer, a research firm said today.
According to data from NPD Group Inc., the iPhone's share of the market grew from 11% before the July launch of the iPhone 3G to 17% as of the end of August. Apple's device is currently the best-selling consumer smart handset in the U.S. and was often in short supply during the first few weeks after its release.

At ACU, Students Navigate College Life via iPhone
Al Sacco, CIO.com reports for Macworld UK:
A class of chatty college freshman sits in a large lecture hall at a small-town-Texas university, debating the merits of presidential candidate Barack Obama's proposed healthcare reforms. The conversation becomes heated at times, defensive voices rise and fall, eyes roll and heads shake. Though only half the class speaks up regularly, they'll all be asked to participate in the final exercise, a vote on which of the arguments presented by debate participants was most convincing.
Such a debate scenario is a common one as fall classes commence, but there's one obvious difference between the Abilene Christian University (ACU) freshmen and the thousands of gen-Y-ers filling colleges throughout the rest of the United States: All of the ACU students carry university-issued Apple iPhones or iPod touch devices, as do their professors. Instead of a simple show of hands, which could be biased because students may be hesitant to go against popular opinion, votes on the debate could be collected and instantly displayed using ACU's custom iPhone application and website.
That's just one possibility of iPhone-enhanced learning at ACU, where professors and staff are using the Apple devices in innovative ways inside the classroom and out.
