Jailbroken iPhone Gains a Keyboard

The Apple Blog's David Appleyard reports:

Someone with a formidable knowledge of iPhone hardware has managed to attach a working external keyboard to his 3G iPhone....

It would appear that at present this is primarily a proof of concept, and doesn't perform any real functionality. It's achieved by using a piece of Ruby code running on the iPhone which allows it to connect to a Palm keyboard through a custom cable. It doesn't integrate with the iPhone on a low level, and isn't able to be used in any applications other than the Ruby app it interfaces to.

iPhone Surpasses RAZR as Top Selling Handset

Macworld's Jim Dalrymple reports:

Apple's iPhone surpassed the Motorola RAZR as the leading handset purchased by U.S.-based adults in the third-quarter, according to a new study by market research firm The NPD Group....

The RAZR has been the number one ranked handset for 12 straight quarters. Even as the overall third-quarter market declined by 15 percent year-over-year to 32 million units, Apple had its best quarter ever.

How To Manage Your Network With An iPhone

Network World's Denise Dubie reports:

Network managers looking for a way to expense an iPhone could tell upper management about a new software download that lets them take action and control their environment with a smartphone.

PerformanceIT recently launched a Web site from which IT professionals can download software that lets them transform their iPhone, or BlackBerry or other smartphone, into a handheld remote control, troubleshooting device. FreeMyIT software, available as a virtual appliance or in a software-as-a-service model, makes managed network devices such as routers, switches, servers and desktops accessible on any smartphone or cell phone. The company is emphasizing its application on iPhones because of its broad appeal.

A Rude Awakening for Ma Bell's iPhone Dreams

Motley Fool's Tim Beyers says:

Nothing can kill the iPhone. Not connectivity problems. Not Research In Motion's "Crack"Berry. Not even AT&T, though Ma Bell tried for a time.

No longer. Last week, at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco, a senior AT&T executive said that tethering would come to the 3G iPhone in the not-too-distant future, solving a public-relations fiasco created over the summer when Apple pulled tethering software called NetShare from its iPhone App Store.

Nova Scotia Lures Newcomers With Fake "Pomegranate Phone" Scheme

The Canadian Press reports:

Billed as the "ultimate all-in-one device," the new Pomegranate NS08 phone plays music, takes photos, surfs the web, projects movies and -- simply place the device over a mug - brews a delicious cup of coffee.

It would seem, to anyone who visits http://www.pomegranatephone.ca , that the sleek hand-held does it all, except exist.

The fake gadget and its flashy, interactive website are the centrepiece of a viral marketing campaign funded by the Nova Scotia government to lure newcomers to the province, though some advertising experts say the phoney-phone campaign rings hollow.
