First Look: HANDiBIBLE for iPhone

TUAW's Steven Sande reports:

As TUAW's own Robert Palmer noted a few weeks ago, there are over 20 Bible applications available for iPhone. Some require an Internet connection to query an online Bible database, while others store the text on the device.

HANDiBIBLE (formerly Pocket Bible) is one of the latter apps, and is now available in the App Store (iTunes link). The developer, Jerry Beers, made an easily accessible (US$4.99) and usable Bible application and realizes that version 1.0 is just the start -- he welcomes feature requests.....

Make your iPhone's Camera Go Zoom

Macworld's Scott McNulty says:

There are those who bemoan the lackluster camera on the iPhone, and there are those who decide to do something about it.

The iPhone 3G Mobile Phone Telescope is composed of a clear acrylic case that you snap onto your iPhone 3G, and an attachable lens which promises to give the built-in camera a 6x zoom.....

iPhone Firmware 2.0.2 is available

TUAW's Erica Sadun reports:

A new iPhone software update just hit iTunes. Version 2.0.2 is described as a bug fix release with little additional information. As usual, a version can be downloaded directly from Apple's servers or through iTunes.....

FAQ: iPhone 3G reception - What's the problem? - Your in-depth guide to the iPhone connection problems

Computerworld's Gregg Keizer says:

Apple's iPhone 3G was just a couple of days old when reports began trickling onto the company's support forum from dissatisfied customers....

Within a month, what had started as a few news reports grew dramatically, with several prominent newspapers, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today adding their voices to the chorus.

What's going on? We may not have all the answers, but we do have questions. Here's our take on the griping about iPhone 3G reception.

I Learn, Therefore iPhone

eWeek's Roy Mark says:

Almost a thousand incoming freshmen at ACU (Abilene Christian University) received an Apple iPhone 3G or iPod Touch Aug. 16 as part of their first day in college. The deployment marks the first time that a university has introduced the Apple mobile devices as learning tools on such a large scale.

According to ACU, students will use the devices for everything from class schedules and maps to in-class, real-time surveys. During the launch weekend, the school also hosted a number of Apple, AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent representatives, as well as those from other technology industry leaders, including Google, Turning Technologies, eMantras, Dipity and webfirecracker.com.

My Top 10 Favorite iPhone Apps

Terry White says:

Now that the iPhone software 2.0x and iPhone 3g have been out for a little over a month, I thought I would take a few moments to do a quick review on my favorite iPhone apps. Now keep in mind I currently have 31 3rd party iPhone Apps installed over and above the apps that come with the iPhone. There is something I like about each of them or I would have removed them from my iPhone. As a matter of fact, some of these apps have replaced others that I once thought were great. I have some apps installed like Band and Super Monkey Ball simply because I think they are great uses of technology and show what's possible with a little creativity. However, when I looked at my list of Apps I asked myself, "name 10 that you use ALL THE TIME!" So here they are.....

Analyst Calls for New iPhone Roadmap

Cult of Mac's Lonnie Lazar reports:

Gerry Purdy, a veteran mobile analyst with Frost & Sullivan says the next generation or two of Apple iPhones will have to adapt to different user requirements as Apple builds the franchise to address its growing audience. In a recent report to clients, he cites the many shifts Apple made in the iPod family to cater to different users, saying we can expect it will do the same with the iPhone.

How to kill the Apple iPhone killswitch

Inside Edge says:

Nobody likes the iPhone kill switch that was recently confirmed by Big Brother Apple as being very much a reality.

Apparently it is there for our own good, just in case something nasty gets on to the iPhone by way of a rogue App Store application. Apple can then remotely disable it, and the application you paid for, on your behalf without your permission.

Nice.

Unless, that is, you kill the killswitch first.

How to disable Apple's Kill Switch

Ace of Tech says:

As you may or may not know, Apple has implemented a feature into the new iPhone/iPod Touch firmware to allow them to disable apps remotely on your iPhone. Fortunately there is now a way to lock Apple out of your phone, all you need is a jailbroken iPhone with the 2.0 or 2.0.1 firmware.

My little Pwnie - QuickPwn

iphone-dev.org says:

We've got something for you! (No, it's not the 3G unlock, but still something very useful.)

It's a tool we've been working on to jailbreak a phone more quickly and easily, without requiring a full restore. Unless you are making a custom firmware with specific features, there is nothing inherent in the pwnage process that requires a restore, and we have been planning this tool for some time. It's more convenient because you do not need to make a full IPSW and use iTunes with it, but your phone still ends up pwned and jailbroken.
