When T-Mobile began selling Apple's iPhone in Germany last fall, a legal skirmish ensued, forcing the wireless carrier to sell it untethered to a contract - at $1,460, no less. T-Mobile eventually persuaded a court that the two-year contract was legal.
Now that same kind of European rule would be imported into the United States--meaning AT&T would be legally required to sell a contract-free iPhone - if a new Democratic proposal in the U.S. House of Representatives becomes law.

Apple Posts iPhone 1.1.4 Update
The Register's Tony Smith reports:
Zibri, the coder behind the latest iPhone jailbreaking and unlocking app, ZiPhone, has warned handset owners not to upgrade to the newly released version 1.1.4 firmware until the tool has been fully tested with the update.
Apple posted the iPhone OS update last night. So far, all it's said about the new version is that the code contains a number of "bug fixes". What glitches they repair are not yet known.

iPhone Finds Favour With Business Users
ZDNet.co.uk's Natasha Lomas reports:
O2 may be concentrating its iPhone efforts on consumers but research suggests it shouldn't neglect business users, who apparently love the touchscreen interface.
The Apple device beats the competition hands down when it comes to user-satisfaction rates, according to a survey of enterprise smartphone users.
More than half (59 percent) of iPhone-owning business customers said they are "very satisfied" with the device, the survey by emerging technology research company ChangeWave Research found.

While many of my readers are technology sorts, more of my readers are from the financial side of things. As a result, while they know the words "unlocking iPhone", and they know it is becoming an issue for Apple, it is something of an abstract notion.
Let's make it concrete. Point-and-click tools have made iPhone unlocking a straightforward and relatively trouble-free issue, turning something complex, time-consuming and fraught with opportunities to "brick" your iPhone into something only marginally more complex than running an anti-virus update.

Talkshoe Launches An Easy-to-use iPhone Application
The Standard's MG Siegler reports:
Talkshoe, the Internet community calling service, has unveiled a new application built specifically for the Apple iPhone. The app allows users to access current calls and see upcoming ones with a few simple clicks.
The service, accessed at iphone.talkshoe.com, utilizes the iPhone's ability to recognize phone numbers within webpages and provide one-click access to dial the number without having to type it it. You will however, have to remember a call's 5-digit ID to access the conversation once the number is dialed as well as a PIN number if you have one.
