Another Day, Another iPhone Fix - It's a bug's life

The Register's Bill Ray reports:

Version 2.0.2 of firmware for Apple's iPhone was made available yesterday, offering improvements on 3G reception for some, but not fixing the crashing applications Steve is promising to sort by September.

Apple won't say what's in the latest firmware version, beyond promising "bug fixes", but one thing that won't be fixed is the inability to run third-party applications experienced by some iPhone owners.

HSBC backs off claim of iPhone switch

Electronista reports:

Brenton Hush, HSBC CIO for Australia and New Zealand, made comments last week suggesting his company was considering a global switch from Blackberry to iPhone devices. A UK representative countered those claims this week, saying "I don't know if he was miss quoted or if it was made up, but I can put the rumors to bed now and state there is no truth in it at all" according to an interview with Mobile News....

HSBC has stepped back from the original statements, but without completely denying the possibility.....

Apple: iPhone 2.0.2 update targets 3G issues

Appleinsider's Prince McLean reports:

Apple confirmed that the iPhone 2.0.2 update does indeed include changes to address issues related to 3G reception. USAToday cited company spokesperson Jennifer Bowcock as saying, "The software update improves communication with 3G networks."

The newspaper referenced reports of complaints from iPhone users and cited speculation about possible hardware issues with Infineon chips used in the iPhone, a possibility Infineon itself earlier discounted as unlikely, noting that other phone makers use the same components without any issues.

Test Shows iPhone Download Speeds Fall Significantly After 2.0.2 Upgrade

Cult of Mac's Lonnie Lazar reports:

The iPhone 2.0.2 upgrade seems to have caused a significant drop in download speeds, according to statistics gathered by the Test My iPhone website.

The site, which allows iPhone users to test their iPhone's download and upload speeds, shows that speeds for iPhones tested in the past 24 hours are significantly slower than the average speed in tests done prior to Monday's release of the 2.0.2 firmware upgrade.

How Developers Should Choose Between Android and iPhone

iPod Observer's John Martellaro says:

The Yankee Group has published a report on how developers should elect to choose between the iPhones and Android platforms. The key lies in understanding the ecosystem strategies.

Carl Howe's August 13 report, "How Developers Should Choose Between iPhones and Androids," is aimed at CIOs, IT Mangagers and software developers. In it, he explained that one can expect "Apple to attract more business software developers, while Android will become the favorite platform of phone manufacturers."

BlackBerry Bold Plagued by Same 3G Problems as iPhone

Gizmodo reports:

The BlackBerry Bold has been out in Chile and Germany and drops in Canada tomorrow, so as much as analysts talk out of their ass, Citigroup analyst Jim Suva might not just be blowing hot air when he says that the Bold is plagued by the same 3G connection issues as the iPhone 3G (though 2.0.2 might've made them worse still). Apparently it has a similar penchant for dropping you to EDGE even when there's a perfectly decent 3G signal.

Bold no direct iPhone rival, suffers 3G flaw

Electronists reports:

The BlackBerry Bold and iPhone 3G share similar traits but ultimately apply to entirely different markets, Citigroup investment analyst Jim Suva says in a research note issued today. In a hands-on test of the Bold shortly before its launch, Suva notes that the Bold touts both 3G and a significantly improved web browser versus earlier BlackBerries but that its design is still ultimately suited to work versus Apple's offering. This is particularly acute with the Bold potentially costing as much as $399 on contract.

The Mac Night Owl: Revisiting iPhone Reception Problems

Apple craves good news, so I'm sure they aren't too happy to read about the random connection problems around the world with the iPhone 3G. Although estimates about the number of users affected are usually in the low single digits, with millions of units out there, little things can mean an awful lot.
