O2 Ireland Boss Calls iPhone Customers 'Freaks'

Macworld UK's Jonny Evans reports:

O2 Ireland CEO Danuta Gray calls Apple users "freaks" in an interview with the Irish Independent this morning.

Confirming O2 Ireland's plans to introduce the iPhone in that country in March, Ms. Gray said: "I'd say your Apple freaks will be queuing out the door when we launch."

Apple will introduce the iPhone in Ireland with O2 Ireland, but potential customers are already wincing at O2 Ireland's €399 (Ł304) or €499 (Ł380) price, limited tariffs and service deal for the device.

Apple's iPhone SDK: Curiouser And Curiouser

ITWire's Alex Zaharov-Reutt says:

Early reports that Apple would seek to exert quality control over paid third-party apps to be distributed through iTunes appear to be true, although other reports suggest such strict scrutiny will not apply to free apps – with all to be revealed on March 6.

Yes, iLounge has reported that Apple will only allow third-party apps it authorises to be sold and distributed via iTunes, while Electronista suggests free apps will be treated differently.

iPhone Open for Business? Blackberry Battle May Loom

Dow Jones reports:

The phrase "new enterprise features" in a recent Apple iPhone-related event invite was all it took for some to anoint the iPhone as the next big challenge for Research In Motion, the world's leading supplier of smartphones.

"Here we go, Apple vs. RIM," the Apple news Web site MacDailyNews wrote shortly after the invite was sent.

The iPhone, a combination phone and digital media player, has evolved from pricey bauble for early adopters to one of the fastest-ever selling smartphones, largely on the backs of a $200 price cut and lots of consumer zeal. But based on expectations for next week's events, some believe Apple may use the iPhone to gain more share of business hardware and software spending, and possibly improve the company's overall position in the corporate world.

Apple Is Transparent in Bid

WSJ's Nick Wingfield reports:

Apple Inc.'s iPhone boasts the power of a computer under its metallic-and-glass shell, including a stripped-down version of the software that runs Apple's Macintosh computers. Soon independent software makers will be able to harness that power themselves, in a development that could broaden the iPhone's appeal.

Apple has invited the media to an event Thursday at the company's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, where it plans to present an "iPhone software roadmap." One of the event's highlights will be a software-development kit that will let independent programmers build iPhone applications, according to Apple's invitation.

iPhone Keeps Shine On Apple

Bloomberg News reports:

Apple shares jumped nearly 6% Thursday after Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook confirmed the goal to sell 10 million iPhones this year and suggested sales will hold up in an economic slowdown.

Despite a losing day for the markets, Apple added $6.95 to $129.91, the most since November.
