Why I'm Not Upgrading to an IPhone 3GS

Macworld's Peter Cohen says:

I love my iPhone 3G and I'm sure the 3GS is a nice step up, but I'm sticking with what I have for now. And AT&T's upgrade pricing is only part of the reason why. At the end of the day, it's just not that compelling an upgrade for me to run out and get one.

Apple Ups Stake In UK Mobile Chippery

Apple and Intel have seen the future, and it's mobile - and both companies are putting big money into a UK company whose chip designs are becoming increasingly attractive to companies battling in the mobile arena.

Apple Triples Stake In U.K. Chip Company

CNET's Jim Dalrymple reports:

Apple on Friday upped its stake in U.K. chip company, Imagination Technologies.

....The purchase brings Apple's stake in the company to 9.5 percent, effectively tripling its ownership in Imagination, according to a report on MocoNews.

Apple uses Imagination's SGX GPU in the recently released iPhone 3GS, allowing it to have much better graphics using Apple's OpenGL ES 2.0, according to AppleInsider.

Ten Of The Best... iPhone Beaters

The Register's Dave Oliver says:

The iPhone 3G S is now upon us, bringing with it incredible new things like MMS, video recording, laptop tethering, stereo Bluetooth and the marvel of cut and paste. Hang on. Haven't other smartphones been doing this sort of thing for ages?

While iPhone mania shows no sign of dissipating.... there are now a lot of very credible alternatives out there, all with touchscreens, fancy new interfaces, HSDPA 3G, Wi-Fi, A-GPS and the ability to expand and improve with downloadable apps.

At Reg Hardware we ve had a rummage around to bring you ten of the best of these iPhone substitutes. Our ratings are based on comparing iPhone-style features and don't reflect how each phone would be rated in a standalone review.

Why AT&T Has a Lock on the iPhone

Tidbits' Glenn Fleishman says:

when at&t mishandled public relations around the iphone for the nth time recently - in having no formulated or ostensibly correct answer about upgrade fees for existing subscribers - i heard via email and read on twitter plenty of folks counting the days until at&t was no longer the exclusive u.s. carrier for apple's phone.

i don't want to say that ain't gonna happen, because we all know that where there's a business will, there's a technology way. but there are a few big bars in the way.

The Mac Night Owl: Is AT&T the Enemy to Continued iPhone Success?

Not being in an absolute rush to get an iPhone 3GS, I opted to simply order one from Apple’s online store after I got confirmation that I could upgrade without paying an early termination or conversion ransom to AT&T. The order was officially placed on June 23rd for the black 16GB version.
