Wireless Connector Can Extend The Battery Life Of Devices Like The iPhone and BlackBerry By Up To 12 Times
Canwest News Service's Sarah Schmidt reports:
An Ottawa inventor has pulled off something the titans of innovation behind the iPhone couldn't - find a way to reduce power consumption of the "power-sucking" device to increase battery life.
Atif Shamim, an electronics PhD student at Carleton University, has built a prototype that extends the battery life of portable gadgets such as the iPhone and BlackBerry, by getting rid of all the wires used to connect the electronic circuits with the antenna.
Research on the invention, to be published in the upcoming edition of Microwave Journal, has already received international accolades.

Google Exempts Self From Apple Rules
The Register's Bill Ray reports:
Google has admitted using forbidden APIs to get its iPhone application working, but despite that admission the application remains available on iTunes in apparent breach of the store rules.
Apple provides documentation on the APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that developers are allowed to use, and restricts access to others for reasons they are under no obligation to reveal. The specific API used by Google Mobile Search gives access to the proximity sensor that the app uses to detect when the handset is lifted against the face - and thus when it should start recognising speech.

Apple iPhone 'Jailbroken' After Software Update
The Telegraph reports:
Hackers have cracked the Apple iPhone 3G's latest software 2.2 update, meaning users can "jailbreak" their phones to run any application.
Apple released new software for the iPhone 3G last Friday. The iPhone 2.2 software update adds Street View to the Google Maps application along with better directions when travelling on foot or by car, improved call quality, the ability to download podcasts over the air, and an enhanced Safari web browser with integrated search bar.
But now the iPhone Dev team, a group of coding experts, have found a way to circumvent the security features build into the latest software update, meaning iPhone owners can "hack" their handset to install a wide variety of software and applications to the device that aren't available through Apple's approved App Store.

Apple Forced To Pull Misleading UK iPhone ad
The Register's Bill Ray reports:
Apple's latest iPhone advert has been condemned by the ASA for giving the impression the phone could download and install applications quickly and easily, forcing the firm to pull the ad.
The advert shows the usual downloading and installing of an application with amazing ease, and ends with the small print reading: "Steps removed and sequence shortened. Network speeds may vary." This disclaimer basically means they could have shown anything on the screen and claimed it was software being installed.
