Google tidies up iPhone apps for Macworld

The Register's Bill Ray reports:

Google has speeded up its iPhone applications, as well as improving its customised homepages and providing quick links to users' favourite Google applications.

Google has long endorsed the idea of online applications, and until the iPhone SDK becomes available (due in February) the only officially-approved way to access applications is online. So the combination should be compelling.

On Christmas Day Google saw more hits from iPhones than any other device. This was widely heralded as proof that the iPhone offers the most compelling browsing experience, though that's more accurately attributed to the fact that Google is pre-loaded as a bookmark on the iPhone. Still, it's hard to dispute that iPhone users are averaging more browsing time than their Nokia-toting counterparts.

BlackBerry Phones To Debut In China

Shanghai Daily reports:

BlackBerry phones will be available on the Chinese mainland for the first time by the end of first quarter, said the country's major distributor China Mobile yesterday, which halted talks with Apple to introduce iPhone into China.

The first model offered to Chinese customers will be BlackBerry 8700 and it will be available for business use, but not to personal users, according to an official at China Mobile's Shanghai branch data service division.

China Mobile picks BlackBerry over iPhone

vunet's Matt Chapman r e

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) appears to have cracked the Chinese market at the expense of the iPhone, following a breakdown in talks between China Mobile and Apple.

RIM has secured the backing of China Mobile, while the iPhone has been spurned in a row over revenue.

This will come as a blow to Apple, as China Mobile's 332 million customers offer the largest number of subscribers of any single mobile phone company.

Apple's Fight In Japan

Forbes' Elizabeth Woyke reports:

Japan may be Steve Jobs' great Asian hope. But are Japanese consumers getting infected with iPhone fever as people in so many other countries have?

The nation has emerged as the front-runner to launch Apple's iPhone in Asia amid news that China's leading mobile operator has ended negotiations to carry the sleek handset.

What would Apple's iPhone mean for Rogers Communications?

The National Post's Jonathan Ratner says:

A group of RBC Capital Markets analysts think Apple Inc. could announce the launch of the iPhone in Canada as early as Tuesday, and that Rogers Communication Inc. shares would enjoy a bump as a result....

What would adding the iPhone mean to Rogers? Well, according to the folks at RBC, it would mean 150,000 new subscribers in 2008 and about $100-million annually in EBITDA.

REALbasic for iPhone?

The Register's Gavin Clarke reports:

Uncertainty over Apple's iPhone SDK is making a least one potential partner cautious about backing the phone, despite its popularity.

Geoff, the president and chief executive of REAL Software (the company that created REALbasic), has expressed interest in porting his company's cross-platform language to the iPhone as part of a potential mobile strategy.
