iPhone Unlock Team Strikes Again

The Register's Gavin Clarke reports:

A hotly anticipated development kit for hacking your iPhone and bypassing Apple's official application store has been released.

The PwnageTool is a Mac OS-X-based SDK from the iPhone Dev Team that lets you add "unsigned code" to the iPhone and iPod Touch. This means you don't have to wait for Apple's approval on what you can run or have to download approved applications from the App Store. A version for Windows is expected in the next 24 hours.

iPhone popularity spurs Blackberry sales

Associated Press Writer Rob Gillies reports:

Not only did Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry smart phone, see its profit more than double last quarter, it may have gotten a boost from a top competitor's strong sales.

RIM has benefited from Apple Inc.'s introduction of the iPhone in June because it brought attention to smart phones, and more people are starting to use them, said Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek.

"People are starting to realize, 'Why should I buy a Razr when I can buy a BlackBerry or an iPhone?' I think the iPhone was the single biggest blessing RIM ever had," Misek said.

iPhone Used Less For Talk, More For Web And Music, Says iSuppli

DIGITIMES Eric Mah reports:

US iPhone owners are spending their time enjoying all its capabilities – voice, data communications and multimedia entertainment – rather than exclusively using it for traditional voice calls, according to a latest consumer survey by research firm iSuppli.

Owners of all types of mobile handsets use their phones for voice communications 71.7% of the time, according to research from iSuppli's ConsumerTrak survey of US residents. In contrast, iPhone owners spend just 46.5% of their time with the product engaged in voice calls.

iPhone Frenzy in Russia Fueled by Smugglers, Jeweler

Bloomberg's Alex Nicholson reports:

Apple Inc. has gained unlikely allies in its bid to boost iPhone sales: Russian smugglers.

The device isn't sold by Cupertino, California-based Apple in Russia and it can't be used legally on local networks. Still, about 250,000 people own one, more than any other country except the U.S. and China, according to Eldar Murtazin, chief analyst at Moscow-based Mobile Research Group.

That popularity has turned into a bonanza for traders who sell the phones in kiosks and on the Internet for $1,000 each, more than twice the U.S. price. Hackers say they charge as much as 2,500 rubles ($105) to ``unlock'' them so they work locally.

``It's an icon for Russians,'' said Timofei Kulikov, a lawyer and buyer of electronic products for X5 Retail Group NV, Russia's largest supermarket chain. ``If you see two businessmen at lunch in Moscow, they'll both have iPhones on the table.''

Exec touts developing iPhone apps without the iPhone SDK

InfoWorld reports:

There are more ways to develop applications for the Apple iPhone device than using the company's beta iPhone SDK. Through a combination of Microsoft and other technologies, developers can build a Web application for the iPhone, according to a speaker at the VSLive conference in San Francisco on Wednesday evening.

Developers can use technologies including Microsoft's ASP.Net, C#, and ASP.Net AJAX as well as WebKit extensions to build applications, said Jeffrey McManus, CEO of consulting firm Platform Associates. WebKit is an open source Web browser extension as well as a Mac OS system framework version of the engine used by the Safari browser.

Want to Learn How to Write iPhone Applications?

iphone.sys-con.com's Kevin Hoffman says:

If you're like me, you've probably been spending every waking moment you have eating, living, and breathing the iPhone SDK. Since March 6th, that's pretty much all I can think about once I get home. So, what do you do if you want to learn how to write iPhone apps, but you want to become a pro at iPhone SDK programming? Its one thing to read the SDK, page-by-page until your eyes bleed (what I do for fun), but most people like to hang out with other developers, get hands on, do labs, see demos, and generally get their hands dirty.

Lucky for us, there is such an iPhone boot camp coming up in June , Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2008 in San Francisco.....

The Apple iPhone: Successes and Challenges for the Mobile Industry

A new whitepaper by Rubicon Consulting says:

The Apple iPhone is easily the most publicized new mobile device in recent memory. But despite all the discussion about the product, there's relatively little hard information available to the public on its impact. How is it being used? What effect is it having on customers and on the technology industry?

To help answer those questions, Rubicon Consulting conducted a detailed survey of 460 randomly-selected iPhone users in the US. This report summarizes the findings from the survey, and what they mean for users and other companies.

You can read an abstract or download a PDF of the report here.

iPhone users: Think Young And Rich, Not Different

News.com's Dan Farber reports:

Rubicon Consulting's survey of 460 iPhone users in the U.S. surfaced the obvious. iPhone users are are young (half under 30), tech savvy and, besides telephony, primarily use the device for e-mail, texting, and Web browsing.

In addition, about one-third of the survey's respondents said they carry a second phone, presumably for some business purpose or a second phone number. Ten percent of those surveyed have a RIM BlackBerry alongside their iPhone. iPhone users also are about 40 percent above the U.S. median in household income.

The iPhone, starting at $399, naturally appeals to an elite, hip, younger crowd with disposable income. In fact, iPhone goes together with BMW, an object of desire for those who can afford it.
