'Can I Try It?'

Low End Mac's Austin Leeds says

Lying down in bed with a bit of a stomach ache, I decided to swing over and check out Low End Mac's hardware profiles to divert my focus. (This is yet another area my iPad excels in - because of its small size and screen lock, I can use it while lying down sideways.)...

I clicked on the PowerBook 100 link, just out of curiosity, and proceeded to read about Apple's first laptop.....

Anyway, like any curious person with a stomach ache, I decided to search YouTube for some footage of the old PowerBook, hoping for a video of Steve Jobs proudly carrying it out onto a stage in front of hundreds of cheering people.

What I found was a bit more interesting....

I was struck by how much the ad resembled my actual experience with my iPad.....

10 Year Old Boy Fixes Cracked iPhone Screen For $21.95

CNet's David Carnoy reports:

It used to be that parents would encourage their kids to do arts and crafts projects. Now they're making them fix their cracked iPhone screens. Just ask Brett, who you last saw building his own iPad stand for $12.40. He's my 10-year-old nephew, and his father put him to work recently to fix his cracked iPhone 3GS screen, which was apparently caused by an encounter with a set of keys.... Brett did the whole thing for a little more than $20, but you can do it for even cheaper, depending on where and from whom you buy your kit.

To Settle Lawsuit, AT&T Lets You Unlock Anything That's Not An iPhone

Consumerist's Phil Villarreal reports:

AT&T has settled a class action suit by providing codes that unlock any phones that were bound to AT&T. That includes any phones but that pesky iPhone, which is bound by an exclusivity agreement that lasts til 2012 but may or may not have already been renegotiated.

Apple's iPad Is A New Kind Of PC - "Curated Computing"

Market research firm Forrester has released a $749.00, 9 page (3190 word) report on the iPad authored by Sarah Rotman Epps, and subtitled: "Apple's Product Strategy Challenge Lies In Reshaping Consumer Habits." The abstract reads:

The iPad is a new kind of PC. It ushers in a new era of Curated Computing - a mode of computing in which choice is constrained to deliver more relevant, less complex experiences. Curated Computing is necessary to empower alternative form factors, such as touchscreen tablets, wearable and ambient devices, game consoles, and connected TVs. The iPad's Curated Computing experience makes the tablet form factor viable for the first time since it was introduced commercially more than two decades ago. The time is right to promote tablets as a fourth form factor for the multiple-PC-owning consumer, but the tablet's success beyond the iPad is not a given. Product strategists hoping to build a market for tablets will have to reshape consumers' expectations of what a PC can be and how it fits into their lives alongside desktops, laptops, and smartphones.

Navy Federal Credit Union and EffectiveUI Unveil iPhone App For More Than 3.4 Million Navy Federal Credit Union Members

[Press Release]

Navy Federal Credit Union, the world’s largest credit union, and EffectiveUI, an award-winning, user experience ( http://www.effectiveui.com/ ) design and development agency, today announced the release of a free mobile banking app for the iPhone and iPod touch®. The Navy Federal mobile app ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/navy-federal-credit-union/id370811491?mt=8 ) will make it easier for the organization’s 3.4 million members to securely manage their accounts from wherever they may be in the world.

Serving personnel and families from all branches of the U.S. Military, Navy Federal ( http://www.navyfederal.org ) responded to the needs of its members – who are stationed all over the country and the globe – to give them seamless, mobile access to their banking services.

A unique feature within the iPhone app is the ability to receive an instant alert when interest rates change, which helps members track and decide when to apply for a loan. In addition, members can use the application to quickly check and calculate currency exchanges, an important feature for those stationed overseas.

The app also provides users with an intuitive way to locate the closest branch locations and free ATMs, research rates, and calculate loan payments, as well as the functionality and strength of a full-fledged mobile banking service. Members can instantly check account balances, view recent transactions and transfer money.
“With an adoption rate of more than 10,000 downloads in the first two weeks of its availability, the application is helping enhance Navy Federal members’ overall experience,” said Julie Griffin, Navy Federal’s vice president of eServices. “Without question, our commitment to a superior banking experience needed to transfer to our mobile application.”

Navy Federal enlisted EffectiveUI’s design and UX expertise ( http://www.effectiveui.com/what-we-do/ ) in order to provide members with increased and intuitive access to their banking information. The companies worked together closely to ensure members’ mobile banking experience is not only productive, but elegant and easy, as evidenced by the high user rating on Apple’s App Store.

“Creating a better user experience should be top of mind with government agencies and institutions as they begin to expand the channels through which they reach their audiences, and it’s great to see an organization like Navy Federal leading the charge in creating better user experiences by addressing member needs,” said Rebecca Flavin, CEO, EffectiveUI. “We were honored to work with Navy Federal to deliver a useful and engaging mobile application for their members.”
