Apple's iPad: Computing's Next Leap Forward?
Computerworld's Michael Deagonia says:
It's been nearly two decades since the laptop's invention, and in that time we've moved into an era where portability is as necessary as a constant connection. In this new era, the laptop form factor has become increasingly unwieldy. Unless you're sitting down, using one is an awkward balancing act; it's not exactly the best fit for an increasingly mobile world.
For years, PC manufacturers fought the inherent awkwardness of their products by building smaller and smaller laptops. These days, netbooks are all the rage, even though they're generally cramped and underpowered. But a small netbook or laptop still relies on the same, increasingly outdated design: flip-up screen and computer/keyboard base.
The iPhone changed the game....
With the release of the iPad on April 3, Apple is moving to the logical next step: Portable, focused computing is getting a bigger screen...

Blackberry Users Ready To Abandon Ship For The iPhone, Nexus One
TUAW's Chris Rawson reports:
If a recent survey from market research firm Crowd Science is anything to go by, there's dark times ahead for RIM, maker of the Blackberry smartphone. 40% of survey respondents said they plan to ditch their Blackberry handset for an iPhone when it's time to upgrade. As if that wasn't bad enough, another 32% of those surveyed said they'd be getting a Nexus One for their next smartphone instead of another Blackberry. The survey doesn't appear to have asked about other companies' smartphones, but even if they didn't, the story told by these numbers is bad enough as is: at best, only 28% of current Blackberry users plan on sticking with the platform.

ShoveBox Developer Forays into Digital Sheet Music with New iPhone App Etude
Wonder Warp Software, developers of the Mac/iPhone productivity app ShoveBox, has released Etude, a new iPhone app for learning music on the piano.
The app combines traditional sheet music with an on-screen keyboard whose keys light up to reveal which notes are being played as well as a MIDI synthesizer that simultaneously plays the piece aloud. It also has its own in-app music store with hundreds of songs, all of which are currently offered free to users who buy the app.
Today, the songs available for download in the app are largely public domain, but Wonder Warp hopes to finish negotiations with sheet music publishers to offer users more contemporary music like pop songs and film soundtracks. But for now, the music selection spans everything from classical pieces like Moonlight Sonata to nursery rhymes like The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Etude is available in the iPhone App Store today for an
introductory price of $2.99 USD. More information can be found at:
http://etudeapp.com
The app runs on all models of iPhone and iPod Touch devices running OS version 3.1 or higher. A version for Apple's upcoming iPad tablet computer is also in the works, with a preview available soon on the app's website.
