Federal Lawsuit Claims Apple's iPad Overheats In Minutes

ComputerWorld's Gregg Keizer reports:

Apple was sued last week over claims that its iPad easily overheats, then suddenly switches itself off.

In a complaint filed with an Oakland, Calif. federal court last Friday, a trio of plaintiffs accused Apple of everything from fraud and deceptive advertising to violations of California's consumer protection and unfair business practices laws by making, marketing and selling allegedly defective tablets.

Apple Sued Over Hot iPad Shutdowns

The Register's Rik Myslewski reports:

Apple's iPad can shut down if it gets too hot, and Jacob Baltazar, Claudia Keller, and John Browning are as mad as hell and aren't going to take it anymore.

Those unhappy iPadders have filed suit against Apple — and they're asking the court to elevate their claim to class-action status.

Their lawsuit, filed in the US District Court, Northern District of California, alleges that "the iPad overheats so quickly under common weather conditions that it does not function for prolonged use either outdoors, or in many other warm conditions."

iPad Alert: Are You A Selfish Elite Or An Independent Geek?

The Register's Kelly Fiveash says:

Apple iPad owners tick all the obvious boxes when it comes to the kind of crowd Cupertino has happily been wooing with its fondle slab since launch in March this year.

They're six times more likely to be "wealthy, highly educated and sophisticated. They value power and achievement much more than others. They're also selfish, scoring low on measures of kindness and altruism." This is according to a survey carried out by consumer research outfit MyType.....

iLiveMath Oceans... "The brilliant photographs, are just as gorgeous as you would expect from iHomeEducator. There are over 30 types of sea creatures featured in this app! The quality sound effects create a sea-like environment that engages even the most distractible child. The word problems are ocean-themed too. Children can work through the problems, and use their imaginations to take them away on an ocean expedition while learning and having fun working through over 100,000 randomly generated math word problem questions." The Homeschool Desk

The natural language engine will use car nouns, verbs, locations, measures, quantities, and other variable metrics to formulate sentences which are associated to the photographs and the sounds. The word problems and their associated answers are nearly endless across three levels of difficulty.

Just like the previous iLiveMath apps, students and teachers can collaborate on word math problems using Twitter, email, and blogs. Questions are asked and the student selects the answer from a picker dial. The student is then provided immediate correct or incorrect feedback.

Family Tracker App For the iPhone 4 Tracks Users 24-7

[Press Release]

After the success of their Sex Offenders Search app, LogSat Software released an update for another of their iPhone applications - Family Tracker. Family Tracker allows you to track your wife, husband, children and fiancée 24/7 using the new multitasking feature in the Apple iOS4.

The new Family Tracker runs in the background on the iPhone, constantly updating its GPS location. Spouses can thus instantly know their partner has safely reached their destination at home, work or during long trips. Parents can know if their children are exactly where they should be, and didn't sneak out without permission. The location can also be viewed from a web browser, so a parent without an iPhone can still easily locate the family members. Privacy concerns are nonexistent , as the owner of the iPhone has to give prior consent in order to be tracked. Family Tracker allows peace of mind be letting you know where all your family members are at all times.

Family Tracker for the iPhone retails for a one-time purchase of $3.99. AT&T offers a similar service that instead costs $14.99/month.

"With our busy lives, sometimes we don't have time to answer the phone and/or write an SMS text to our spouse/parents. With Family Tracker we can let them know we are "OK" by just by having our iPhone with us" says Roberto Franceschetti, developer of Family Tracker.

Family Tracker can be purchased from the website:

The Tech Night Owl: So is the iPad a PC?

According to the conventional wisdom, Apple is selling more and more Macs every quarter, but remains far behind on the global market, with just a slim single digit market share. The real issue, however, is whether the well-known surveys are seriously understating Apple's success.
